So when will the Redskins Logo get back on the helmet and playing field?

I think the problem with the 'racism' argument (beyond the fact that most would agree 'Redskins' was rarely if ever viewed as a perjorative in modern use) is in how it is defined. If you went to the mall and started screaming 'Redskins!' people would just think you were a crazed football fan. No one would ever imagine you were hurling racial epithets at Native Americans. But you make a good point bowhunter. The dilemma is (and it's not just in terms of the 'Redskins' name) is HOW many folks being offended or outraged requires consideration or change? Is it a majority? Is it 1 person? How does society define 'offensive'?

It's extremely difficult to set the bar at one. Or a couple. Or a few. Or even a small minority. Because when the bar is set there, what ISN'T going to be found 'offensive'?

I don't have an answer. I think the dilemma with 'Redskins' always was that the vast majority of Native Americans didn't seem to find it offensive in any way. Some did. Many seemed to view it as a badge of honor and respect. But I think we've yet to see any evidence that a significant % of Native Americans felt it was racist or wrong or disrespectful. Again though - 'significant' may be in the eye of the beholder.

The bottom line is, that name is gone, and having been *deemed* racist, whether that's fair or reasonable or even true - it doesn't matter. In today's world no one wants the stain of that on them. It's never ever coming back and we need to move forward.

For God's sake with something better than the 'Commanders' please :)

I chuckle at the memory of some years ago when the Redskins went to Green Bay and it was announced that a massive Native protest would be held outside of the stadium that day.

Ten people showed up with signs.

Maybe the pendulum swings back to normal and one day the real name is used ... maybe not. But the whole thing is beyond absurd.
 
I would add my opinion but I cannot without delving into politics.

Suffice it to say that what is now often viewed as acceptable by a significant percentage of society is anything but to me. What is now often viewed as unacceptable by a significant percentage of society is also anything but to me.

And even though he works for Harris he also works for the other 31 owners and it's absolutely no guarantee a name change to Redskins will be approved. I don't think it will ever be attempted. I'd read back a little further. You can agree with Riggo at your peril, but nobody who's been active over the past 2-4 days is advocating for "Redskins" to come back (at least not realistically). The debate was really down to "would the commissioner let the team rebrand early now that there's been an ownership change?"

The post 2 posts before this one certainly implied that they want the name changed back to Redskins. The one that followed implied this as well. I think it's clear that there is a fairly large segment of our fan base who want the name Redskins back.
 
Yep, but I've learned that what I want & what I receive are almost never the same thing.
 
I guess what I find puzzling is fans who continue to think 'Redskins' coming back is a possibility, when one of the very first definitive statements we heard from the Harris Group (and Josh Harris directly) was that a return to 'Redskins' wasn't on the table.

They've literally stated publicly and repeatedly 'It's not coming back'. I don't know what more you need to know other than that.

So I'm not opposed to people expressing their wishes and preferences, but that's all they are at this point.

I kid I kid, but seriously I was pretty devastated when the name changed, I think it hit just a little bit harder for out of market fans because we didn't have the home team thing to fall back on.

Our identity, the very thing that made us fans was gone and in my mind I struggled to differentiate what the difference was between what the Commanders meant to me and say the packers or the Bengals.

Some people don't get how important that identity was and still is for some and that's fine but that's where the disconnect in this debate gets so heated because to some it was irrelevant and the team is still the team no matter what we call them.

still hate the new name and would like a new one but I'm past being hung up on the old name, I always knew it was never coming back and at this point the awkwardness and backlash of even trying to bring it back probably wouldn't outweigh any positives.

For me it was a lot like the death of a loved one and I had to go through the 5 stages of grief but I'm at acceptance now and ready to move on.

I was in the redwolves camp, because I loved the fact that it had two syllables and phonetically was identical to redskins, I didn't understand the people who thought that trying to cling to the word red was tacky, why not try to hold onto a little of the past plus there are tons of other teams out there with the word red in it, many believe braves was changed to redskins because we played at fenway and Marshall wanted the redsox fans to be able to relate, it's a common thing with branding and would have blended seamlessly after a little time had passed, certainly better than the aberration that is the 3 syllable commanders monstrosity.

There's also many cool themes that can be done with wolves like a howl in the stadium, that horn the Vikings use sounds pretty cool on gamedays and there are some really good ideas you could use for fierce looking wolf logos.

It would be nice to get one more name change, done right this time so we can finally bury snyder and any legacy he might have had 6 feet under and move on to what looks like a very bright future.

I didn't care for Redwolves (sort of had a Pokemon vibe to me) but it had so much fan support, particularly in contrast to what they went with, which NO fans were pining for or who would've come up with that in a million years of soliciting fan feedback. I would gladly get on board with it as it seems to be a fan favorite. I think 'Wolves' would be perfect though.

That's been my primary preference all along - not that I GET the name I WANT but that the name is one most fans can embrace and one with the potential for some cool logos, uniforms, and traditions can grow out of. I think some version of Wolves could do all those things and would have broad support.
 
Yeah I liked wolves too.

Washington wolves rolls of the tongue well plus wolves doesn't have to be shortened to sound good, nobody would be calling us the "ves" to avoid the 3 syllable thing and commies coms and manders all sound atrocious.
 
Part of me believes that they turned Red wolves down because it would lead to too many people still saying Redskins. Well hell, it happens anyway and will continue until the Glory Days Generation dies out.
I firmly believe that Commanders was chosen because Ron Rivera wanted something military themed and Snyder went along with it because he really didn't care what it was changed to and as the jock sniffer he is,went along with Rivera and Wright.

Just disappointed that current ownership has no cajones when it comes to the name issue.

I liked both Red Wolves and Red Hawks. But it was my understanding that there were trademark issues with the Timberwolves. Not sure if Red Hawks would have the same issue with the Atlanta Hawks.
 
I’m not aware of any trademark issues that can’t be overcome with dolla bills.
 
Yeah, I've always thought that was a red herring. I mean, there are Pro Sports Teams with the EXACT same name already.

I believe it was chosen because the trademarks were easily obtainable with relatively limited resources and the name does make sense for D.C. (that doesn’t mean it’s a GOOD name)

The San Antonio Commanders provided an easy out that wouldn’t have involved a lot of legal wrangling. Again, I think the choice was all about dollars and cents.
