So did Banks secure a spot ?

If the roster was somewhere between 55 and 60 players, it would be a no-brainer to keep Banks. You never know with Mike but he did say Banks has to do more than just return kicks and the way Robinson looked against the Bears, Banks would have to kill it the next two games in order to stick.

From what I recall, BMitch only got to touch the ball either because of injuries to starters, or Gibbs had to get him some touches to keep him content.
Your recollection is incorrect. Mitchell was a 3rd down weapon for much of his career here. Also, he was often the #2 RB on gameday, on top of the emergency QB. Many times, after scoring a touchdown, either returning, rushing, or receiving, he would make the tackle on special teams on the ensuing kickoff.

Mitchell is a mouthy, angry asshole these days.

But, he was never a one trick pony.

I don't disagree that BMitch was a great player and Banks doesn't measure up, but to think that we never had a guy whose sole responsibility was returner isn't true. We've had a number of them...and if they were to ever have become of starter value at their position, they'd have never continued to be a returner.

I think the whole Banks 'has to be a better receiver' is a motivational tool by the coaches.

We haven't had a return guy hit home runs like him since Gibbs I.

Now, if we could get a better ST coach, who knows how many grand slams he could get.

I understand your point - I think where I'd differ is that not all teams are equal and our current team in no way can afford to spend a roster spot on a guy who does nothing other than serve as return man. On lots of Gibbs teams, we had quality depth where a roster spot may not have been as crucial.

Banks is a two-edged sword.

he can help on returns if the conditions are right.

but he can hurt the team as well.

if the club sustains two injuries at the wide receiver position during the season and need Banks to come off the bench and play we are going to be in trouble.

then we will be in the market for a waiver wire pickup in mid-season to come in and learn the offense from scratch.

personally, I would hope that in Year 3 of the rebuild we would be past the point where we need a ST return to count on putting points on the board.

Mike Nelms was a one trick pony :)

I love Mike Nelms. He's one of my favorite players in history.

Strangely, I have never been able to find footage on him anywhere on the internet. It's a shame....especially for the younger generation of Skins fans who never saw him play.

Strange fact, that goes against what the Redskins have done for so many years:

In New England, RBs are thought of so lowly, that they absolutely HAVE to play on ST to make the roster. Now that's a modern day, serious NFL passing attack.

Even with a terrible pass defense, they still make the SB simply because they score more points....and mainly through the air.

Now compare that to the antiquated mindset we have seen here for so long. Imagine Portis having been REQUIRED to play ST to even make the roster.

Trivia question of the night: Where did Mike Nelms play college ball at?

Hopefully it's a sign of great things to come.......Baylor. :)

Banks will be on the roster.

Shanny loves the guy.

Oh, and BMitch was a one trick pony, too.

different time, different circumstances. Back then you didnt rotate out so many different players like you do now. More rotation translates to more players needed... hence the reason so many roster spots are needed for more players at specific postions. Also back then it was rare you saw a 3 receiver set, let alone the 5 receiver sets you see now... thus making it necessary to keep additional DBs on the sidelines.

In addition to this, BMitch was also our 3rd string QB....

I don't think Banks makes the final roster. We have too many promising young guys at WR to give a spot to a guy who has almost zero chance to contribute there. Conversely we have other guys who can return punts and who are probably more sure handed when they do to boot. For every nice return he has he's good for two or three bobbles. At least that's how I seem to remember it.

I've always appreciated his attitude and speed but it's time to move on.

The touchdown was great. The muff/fumble was terrible. He has a history of not handling the ball now. With his lack of on field contributions, I'd say he's a long shot, but his biggest drawback is that for him to be effective he's got to be at 100 percent. When he gets dinged he becomes worse than average. Unfortunately, NFL players are rarely 100 percent. He's bound to get nicked and without his top speed we see what happens to his returns. We've seen it two years in a row where he's pretty deadly in his first two or three games and then all but disappears.

you can't compete consistently, taking the pounding in the NFL at 5'7 and 150 pounds.

gone are the days when you could simply return punts and find a niche. the competition is too fierce.

Richard Crawford, Aldrick Robinson and a number of others can return kicks and they are infinitely more credible at a regular position on the offense/defense than Banks.
