So...about #36 and #40

Last night played out almost exactly like the BGO Mock Draft did and here we sit going into Day 2 without a single OT left on the board that has a solid second-round grade.

However, that also means some very interesting talent at other positions has fallen into our laps. Knowing who is left, what are you doing at #36 and #40 now?

Needing help at both CB and S, I think the Bills take DeJean with #33 (I'd already have the card filled out and turned in if I were them). I think the Pats go WR, I just don't know which one. I think the Cardinals take Newton, DT out of Illinois.

With that in mind, I think we are looking at WR and CB at these two picks.
 
I could see them going LB, OT, WR, CB, or S. Those 2 picks could very likely make or break this draft so I hope we choose well.
 
I will say this. If Peters is going to make a trade up, making a move to the top of the 2nd round is probably one of the most likely places for it to happen. Of course, it's also one of the junctures that is likely for other NFL teams because it's almost like a draft restart where teams have time to plan and pitch moves that the usual draft clock doesn't allow for.
 
I really don't care how Peters does it, but we need OT support for Daniels.

We can use our picks staying in place, we can move up or down and get more picks and more candidates, we can keep our powder dry and make a trade AFTER the draft, etc.

But bottom line we need to get this done.

I like Peters approach in putting in the time and squeezing the details. But I remember complaining about Beathard's draft of an otherwise obscure Markus Koch at DE in 1984 in Round 2 when there were recognizable players from big programs still on the board.

Even if you like the front office you can critique their handling of some perceived blind spots.

With the Chargers drafting of Alt it may be that Pipkins, who played well in 2023 and is still relatively young, can be had in a trade and start here at RT.

That would leave draft picks to develop with Lucas over the course of the first half of the season or a bit longer.

But the key on the OL is you can shade protection to one side or another but not both.

So, if we were to replace Wylie with a better RT and went with a band aid fix at LT to start the year we could cover that in our alignments on passing downs.

But Wiley and Lucas together IMO may be the worst pair of potential starting tackles in the NFL. Both are nearing or over 30, past their primes - and their primes were not that great to begin with.
 
If DeJean is still there at 36 I think you need to take him for pure value.

At 40 and 67 I would be looking for a guy like Blake Fisher.

Could be:

36 - DeJean
40 - Fisher
67 - Braswell

We get CB, OT and edge with two picks at 78 and 100 left to go in Round 3.
 
I wouldn’t be surprised by a TE early this evening.

The other thing is that we can easily identify 4 or 5 positions of 'need,' or at least 'room for upgrade' on this roster. No matter what they do, some people are going to have prioritized a different position of need, meaning there will be kick back.

On top of that, i think everyone needs to take a minute to realize that we're not going to be addressing everything in a single draft, let alone on a single night. The right opportunity, whether that means trade, or draft player, has to be there at the right time, or things don't line up to 'solve' a need. This is a multi-stage process, so the long term answer at OT, or whatever, may not be a part of the team in 2024.

If we go TE, someone is gonna get upset we didnt go CB / WR
If we go CB, someone is gonna be upset because we also 'need' a TE
 
Not a single LB has been taken so far. You all know I love Payton Wilson and there are other very good ones available.
 
Yeah, but like running back it's not a value position vis a vis others like CB or OT where finding capable starters in free agency or later in the draft is much more difficult.

The NFL salary cap has its own moneyball dynamics.

What I see around the NFL is a number of first round linebackers not getting the 5th year option because teams figure unless the player has become a star that it's cheaper to let them go and recoup the comp pick and move on.

If DeJean is there we should take him.
 
We have a few major areas of need: tackle and tight end are tops. Not sure we have any viable starters there.

That said, Best Player Available with ties going towards needs.

Our BGO Mock played out exactly the way this draft did, and none of us could justify taking a guy at 36 or 40 that was considered a fringe day 3 guy. That we would be passing up on too much talent to reach .

Obviously we were working on a player ranking from the internet, so it's possible that Peters and co have a higher grade on a guy than we do.... but to your point, BPA with ties going toward Need, but don't prioritize Need to the point that we're sacrificing talent.
 
Well, in my mind you can 'create' BPA by identifying a guy that is high on your board that is still available before you go on the clock and you move up and snag him :)

Waiting for your pick to come up is often the right move IF you don't have a larger agenda or theme to address.

Washington just invested the #2 overall pick in a quarterback so we need to find OT talent both in the draft and perhaps via trade after the draft.

So, proactivity rather than passivity is a key for us in Day 2 especially with those 5 picks to leverage.
 
proactivity to what? If there's a tackle worth 36 or 40 in their mind, we're in position to take them.

I guess we could use 36 and 40, then come back up into the end of the 2nd round if there is a guy that's worthy of the move, but just like yesterday, there's no guarantee that there will be a dance partner.
 
While I didn't take Edgerrin Cooper in my BGO pool, I feel like he could be a target in round two. Quinn worked wonders with Micah Parsons and this could be a player they envision deploying in a similar fashion. Bobby Wagner on a one year deal is obviously not the long term solution. I think LB might be higher on their priority list than we anticipate, despite the emphasis we have the position in FA. Also, I wouldn't necessarily discount the possibility of moving third rounders or future picks to get a third crack at it in round two tonight.
 
Rakestraw is another guy to watch
 
If there is a player that jumps out to them regardless of position, that is way up the board from anyone else, I hope they take him. Even if it’s Newton. I hope it’s DeJean
 
Rakestraw to me looks like a nickel corner or #2 on a middling defense.

His size and speed are not plus assets and he only had one interception in college.

Some people are comping him to Round 2 but that bio to me says Rounds 3-4.

No way I take that player at #36 or 40.
