REDSKINS QB KIRK COUSINS
On his first victory of the season as the starting QB:
"Yeah, it feels really good. Anytime you win in this league, it feels great. I mean, to answer your question, the offense played really well, ran the ball really well two weeks in a row now, which is really encouraging. Just so proud of the offensive line with the way they battled and fought both in the run game and the pass game against what I believe to be one of the better D-lines in the entire NFL."
On the importance of limiting turnovers and scoring second-half points:
“Very important. We felt like 17 wasn’t going to be enough just because of the way NFL offenses can score quickly. So we needed to put those second half points on the board and we needed to protect the football, and it’ll always be an emphasis going forward.”
On if it is encouraging to see positive results in terms of winning this season:
“Yeah, very encouraging. It’ll give us a great feeling this week in preparation and going into the next game. Everyone got a shot on the field and it was a step in the right direction. We’ll just keep working and feel good about this one.”
On RB Matt Jones’ performance:
“Yeah, you know it’s hard. It’s something we’ve never seen before. He’s just a very, very big, strong, physical, running back who can, you know, run downhill and play with confidence. And I think he’s done a good job as well in pass protection and catching the football. Very pleased with both Alfred [Morris] and Matt, and [RB] Chris Thompson did a great job for us, and will continue to do so on third down so those are pieces that we can win with.”
On having successful running backs in the backfield:
“Yeah, it’s going to make our offense that much more efficient and make my job that much easier. I mean you can stay at manageable third downs because you run the ball well and it gives you a great chance. For a play caller and coaching staff it helps really dictate things for them too and puts them in an advantageous position when you can run the football. So everything opens up and it’s the best way to gain yards in this league when you can do it on the ground. Very, very pleased with the way we did that and again it goes back to the offensive line up front, they’re the ones who have to secure the blocks. Very, very pleased with what they were able to do not just this week but last week as well.”
On TE Jordan Reed’s role in today’s win:
"Jordan is very talented and he’s just wired to be able to separate risk and coverage. He has very good hands, so if the ball is not thrown in the easiest location to catch, he’ll still make the catch and he’s a competitor and you saw that today. We need to keep him healthy and we need to keep him on the field. He can be a tough match up for other teams if he’s out there.”
On their first win since the preseason:
“Any time you can win in this league it is very important. We felt like we played well enough to win this week. We found a way to win and I went through this in college and as a young player you learn how to win and you learn what it takes and I feel like we’re in this process right now. I don’t know if I as a young player last year knew how to win. I think I’m still in that process trying to get there and it’s something that I think if we keep playing through it with some of these young guys and keep growing and learning together. I’m excited about what the future could hold if we could keep growing and learning and pushing through things together.”
On getting the ball back to RB Matt Jones after his fumble:
“That’s football, that’s life. You have to face adversity, the other teams are too good not to have setbacks and it comes down to being very tough. Physically, mentally, emotionally, you need to be tough and push through that and have character for four quarters and we showed that today and that’s going to be a challenge every week trying to do that.”
On the importance of the offensive line in today’s game:
“Yeah, it’s a combination of factors. I can’t say enough good things about those guys and how the offensive line has played. If I could give you five reasons for us playing so well, it would be those five guys. That starts with them and also play calling gives me an opportunity to get the ball to my hands so the rush can’t get home and it’s also about being decisive, guys have to get home and get open for me. And again, sacks are better than picks – it’s better to take a sack than throw the ball into coverage - so there’s a level of we’re going to be OK taking sacks at times if the other option was to throw the ball into coverage. Keeping the sack total down gives us the chance to win and puts us in a better situation.”
On the pass rush and the offensive line:
“I think both weeks the offensive line came in knowing they had a challenge in front of them. We talked about it all week for the last two games and I think they elevated their play and I feel like week in and week out in the NFL you see some pretty good defensive lines and some pretty good pass rushers and then you have a 'week off’ and they’re going to be facing a challenge pretty consistently there.”
On the mood of the huddle:
“Well, I felt belief in the huddle today and when you have some of the long drives we’ve been able to put together, you need that. And it’s encouraging, in this league you’re only as good as your last game so now we have to do it week in and week out. But we certainly feel good about some of the things we’ve been able to do with the ball like putting together drives and getting possession of the ball these first two weeks.”
On preparing for Thursday’s game against the Giants:
“I haven’t even looked at the schedule this week of when meetings are or when practice is or walkthrough. I don’t even know but I’ll go home tonight and watch the film of the game and try and get a head start and try and peek at their game against Atlanta. It’s a short week so there isn’t much rest.”
REDSKINS RB MATT JONES
On the first win of the regular season:
"It’s just great for this team to go out there and get a win. We’ve been wanting it all week. We prepared the way we should to go get this win and I’m so happy that we got it."
On his performance:
“It does, it feels great, man. My O-line did great today. [RB] Alfred Morris did great today. I just have this energy feeding off of him when he gets the ball, so it was a great day for us.”
On his response after his fumble:
“Aw, man, I just felt like a pro; I knew I needed to bounce back. I had my teammates to hold me up too. It was great for them and great for us.”
REDSKINS TE JORDAN REED
On playing with QB Kirk Cousins:
"He’s performing very solid. He’s been looking good all week in practice and it’s converting to the field.”
On being able to build on his performance week-to-week:
“It feels good man. You’ve got to keep getting better each week, keep focusing on the small things and eliminating mistakes.”
On the mentality it takes to be a consistent chain mover on the offense:
“You’ve got to not let the pressure get to you on third down and focus on the small things and just run my route.”
REDSKINS S TRENTON ROBINSON
On the Redskins’ first win:
“It’s huge for us because when you’re always counted out… We know what we’re about, this defense knows what we’re about and this offense knows what it’s about. Everybody has each other’s back and we’re just going to build and continue to grow as a team and keep working together.”
On what it means for the defense to give up only 10 points on offense today:
“It’s a huge confidence boost for our defense. If we continue to just keep flying around and hunting, making plays, interceptions and turnovers, all those things will start coming. We just want to play consistently, continue to just keep running around and stay in the game.”
On what it’s like to start a game with S Dashon Goldson:
“That’s something that I’ve always wanted to do since I was back in San Francisco. I was like, 'Man, it would be great to have an opportunity to go out there and play with this guy.’ To be out there with him, it’s really like dreaming, but you’re in it. There are a lot of great leaders on our defense. He leads. Jason [Hatcher] leads. D-Hall [DeAngelo Hall] leads. Keenan Robinson leads. All of these older veterans are leaders. When everybody is working together and nobody is trying to be the rah-rah guy, then great things can happen. That’s what we’re trying to do.”
REDSKINS DE CHRIS BAKER
On the Redskins’ first win:
“It means a lot. It’s just one win right now, so we’ve got to keep going. Each week, we’ve got to take it one week at a time but it’s really important for us to defend our home turf and we were able to do that today.”
On shutting down the opposing team’s running backs in back-to-back weeks:
“Our defensive front really takes pride in being able to stop the run and get after the passer. So we knock out the run early it allows us to be able to attack the pass rush game. We’ve been able to do that successfully.”
On the depth of the defensive line:
“It’s very fun to be able to know that you don’t have to go out there and play 40 or 50 plays. You can go out there and play 25 to 30 plays. You can rotate anytime you get tired and the next person that comes in, it’s not going to be a lack of production or lack of talent. To continue to have six guys that can rotate all game and be fresh, it’s going to be hard for offenses to stop us.”
REDSKINS LB WILL COMPTON
On the Redskins’ first win:
“It’s a starting point. We have what, 15 more weeks, 14 more games? We’ve got a short week. Last year we were 1-1 at this point. Didn’t we have a Thursday game Week 3, I believe, against the Giants? We’ve got to come ready to play come Thursday.”
On the special teams’ performance against WR Tavon Austin:
“We did well today. Tress [Way] did a good job punting it. We didn’t really allow him many returns. I thought we covered well. We’ll have to watch the film. With the kickoff they brought out, I thought we covered well. We have a good unit, but it’s kind of more reassurance that we’re definitely capable of playing well, but it felt good.”
On what he learned this week:
“Every team has different wrinkles, different things they do. So really, it’ll come down to what we see on film and what they do with their explosive players. With Tavon [Austin], there’s a lot more speed, sweep rockets, sweeps, things like that. New York, they have good receivers, a good passing game. We’ll have to watch the film and be ready to play.”
REDSKINS DE STEPHEN PAEA
On what it means to get his first sack as a Redskin:
“It’s a blessing. He fumbled the ball and it fell right in front of me. I feel like I have been rushing well. That was a given sack, not only that, it was a team sack. There’s a reason why he fumbled it. He was about to throw it. Our corner got in front of their receiver. It’s a blessing.”
On what he learned this week:
“We’ve just got to finish, man. Our defense is one of the best defenses in the league or the best defense in the league. If we can play like that – play fast and finish strong – we’ll beat a lot of teams. St. Louis came in and they’re not a bad team. They beat the Seahawks who played in the Super Bowl. We’ve got the Giants this week.”
REDSKINS LB KEENAN ROBINSON
On how the defense is playing so far this season compared to last season:
“We are a different team than last year. In the offseason, they did a great job of bringing guys in who would really help this team out right away and help us win right away. We have guys who are all unselfish. We’re all selfless in a way that we’ll do whatever it takes to win no matter who’s on the field. We have a great D-line who is really two-deep. We don’t have backups and starters on the D-line. We have two groups of guys who are starters who rotate and help us dominate up front. That’s what we do. We wear the offensive line down. We control the line of scrimmage and that’s how we stop the run. Then, that helps us on the back end. We got a lot of coverage sacks and pressures today. We worked hand-in-hand, the front end, the back end… that’s how we win games. That’s how we dominate. That’s how we achieve our goals as a defense.”
On how he feels with a short week coming up with a game on Thursday night:
“I feel great right now, man. Some games, you come out and feel tired, but right now, I feel pretty good. I can’t speak for the rest of the guys. I know that it’s going to be a quick turnaround.”
REDSKINS RB ALFRED MORRIS
On the running game being the focal point of the offense:
“It’s awesome. Me being biased as a running back, we want to keep the ball on the ground. I feel like the run game opens up your offense so much more. These last two weeks it’s been doing just that. We still have to be more consistent, we’ve got work to do. I think we have to be more consistent coming out of the second half, just getting the ball on the ground. Getting two guys with a lot of carries that’s awesome. You know, we were able to control the clock, control the tempo of the game and just string together long drives. It’s through our run game, it’s awesome and I’m loving it.”
On he and RB Matt Jones becoming a feared running back tandem in the NFL:
“I’m excited about him. He did a great job today. He played one heck of a game and he deserves it. I told him not too long ago, 'This is the first of many for you,’ and I truly believe that. But, yeah man, it just might be. We’ll see what happens.”
On what he told Jones after Jones’ fumble:
“Yeah, probably the best advice I ever received playing football, 'Have a short-term memory.’ It’s a lot more games to be played, mistakes happens. Do we want them to happen? No, but if they happen, forget about it. Short-term memory and move on to the next play and he did just that.”
On being able to deliver with a run-heavy game plan:
“It feels great. I mean, we had a great challenge this week as we did last week. We did great this week against their front four, the linebackers and defensive backs that they have. I feel like we rose to the challenge once again and we were able to get our run game going to open up our offense. So, it’s just a great feeling as a running back especially when a lot times people devalue running backs nowadays. But we’re just showing that we are still valuable and hopefully we continue to keep it up so we can continue to keep it on the ground and continue to produce.”
REDSKINS T MORGAN MOSES
On comparing the defenses of the Rams and Dolphins:“Once again, great defense overall, but it all comes down to game planning over the week and executing the game plan. I feel like everybody did a great job of that.”
On the secret behind being able to establish the run:
“Yeah, really it’s just going out there and competing, using our techniques and just winning the one-on-one battles. They’re [running backs] coming out there and playing as a whole. It takes all 11. It takes the receivers blocking, it takes the running backs running hard and hitting the hole and it takes the line blocking. When we are able to do that, we can do great things.”
On what Offensive Line Coach Bill Callahan has brought to offensive line:
“A lot just the physicality, the technique, just the daily grind we go through every day. It’s definitely paying off on Sundays.”
