REDSKINS SIGN TE MATT VELDMAN

LOUDOUN COUNTY, Va. – The Washington Redskins announced today that they have signed free agent tight end Matt Veldman. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. In addition, the team waived defensive end Doug Worthington.

Veldman (6-7, 255) originally entered the NFL as a college free agent with the Jacksonville Jaguars on April 30, 2012. In addition to his time with the Jaguars, his career includes time on the practice squad of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and two stints with the Detroit Lions. He appeared in one game for the Lions last season, making his NFL debut at Minnesota in Week 17.

Veldman played collegiately at North Dakota State from 2008-11, compiling 49 career receptions for 584 yards and seven touchdowns in 41 career games. He served as a team captain for the 2011 season, helping the Bison to a 14-1 record and a Football Championship Subdivision title.

Veldman, 26, attended Becker (Minn.) H.S., where he was a finalist for the state’s “Mr. Football” award after doubling as a tight end and defensive lineman. He was born on Aug. 12, 1988.

Worthington (6-5, 318) originally joined the Redskins via waiver claim on Aug. 6, 2011.
