Roster Predictions for Week 1

If Chase Young and/or Montez Sweat leave in free agency we are going to need a helluva lot more at DE in the draft or via trade than KJ Henry and Andre Jones Jr :aargh4:

Something I've been concerned about since March...

I don't think the club lets Sweat go, I think we lock him up with a good season.

But I do think we will be drafting a DE in Round 2 or 3 in 2024, a guy that is a three down prospect rather than a situational edge rusher like Henry.

Chase Young uncertain for week 1

When since his rookie season has Young been anything other than uncertain?

He's in the same boat as Logan Thomas, he's simply not durable.

Which is a shame because teams that tend to depend upon injury prone players to be starters or difference makers are always having to make trades, signing waiver wire guys or poaching other team's practice squads in mid-season to fill depth at these positions.

Gibbs was very good about sizing up a player's reliability and if over time the guy missed a lot of time Washington would release or trade him.

One reason I was focused so much in camp and the preseason on Cole Turner was I just knew that Logan Thomas was not going to hold up for 17 games.

At 32, Thomas is likely now a better candidate to be a backup rather than a go-to starter.

I think you will see that transition at TE in the early part of the season.

The team could have tried to trade Chase Young in the offseason or over the summer once camp started, but my gut feeling here is that Ron's ego is HEAVILY invested in using the #2 overall pick on Young in 2020.

This was a draft where the Bengals with Joe Burrow and the Chargers with Justin Herbert hit the lottery while Washington with Young and the Dolphins with Tua inherited players that were supremely successful in college but haven't been able to hold up to the physical demands of the NFL.

In Ron's mind I think there was a 50/50 chance Young got on the field and made an impact in 2023 and that, even if he was out as coach at the end of the year, would not have hear grief over blowing a franchise draft choice, etc.

Ego has a lot to do with this staff and front office. They don't cut draft picks even if they can't play.

Joe Gibbs dealt former picks taken in the top several rounds because of contract issues (Tory Nixon), durability/injury issues (Brian Davis), or the inability to play to NFL standards (Wally Kleine) in the 1980's - all of these guys were #2 picks that were here and gone.

Why is Troy Apke still on this roster? He doesn't have an NFL position and spends a lot of time on the injured list. But he's been here 3 plus years and is counting on our books again in 2023.

An outside cover guy on special teams is THAT hard to find we can't move on to a younger guy that can cover kicks AND be a credible backup at cornerback or safety?

To be fair to Young, he played 34 games over 3 years in college without injury and he played 9 games his second year before the ACL injury.

Honestly, my guess is with this first game against a team that already appears to be making a run at Caleb Williams, I'd be sitting any guy with a hang-nail.

The team may be trying to tank, but once the game starts the players play and they will try everything they can to win. I think it's really important we come out and make a statement in this first game, so I would not sit any starters if they are well enough to get out there, dinged or not.

Some love Saadiq Charles. I don't think Talent has ever been his issue, it's the inability to stay on the field

"now can he play consistent?" Should have been the question. The answer is no, he can't. He can't stay on the field long enough to help the team.

I get frustrated with the word "consistency" in sport. For example, the Redskins have been consistent during the Snyder years. They were consistently sloppy, underprepared, and generally bad. Almost every time it mattered, you could count on their kickers missing a chip shot field goal. You could count on the defense marching for an easy score at the end of the half or game ever single time.

Excellence should be the goal not consistency.

(It's nit picking season)
