Ron Rivera - Cancer Survivor / Head Coach

This literally brought me to tears.

I myself am currently a one year survivor of Hodgkin's Lymphoma.

My heart gets torn to shreds whenever I hear that somebody has to deal with cancer. I wouldn't wish the mental hardship and challenges presented by treatment on my worst enemy.

Coach Rivera seems like he is a great leader who isn't afraid of any challenge. He will get through this and I wish him the very best in his journey.
 
There is talk on Twitter about how a "Plan B" is in place in the event that Coach Rivera becomes unavailable this season.

In the midst of a pandemic, I'm pretty sure Rivera will be advised to sit this season out.

It's widely known that those who are going through active cancer treatment are immunocompromised and at greater risk of contracting COVID.

Also, I have done plenty of reading that has stated that those dealing with blood cancers also face greater complications from COVID compared to other forms of cancer.

I love my team and I think Coach Rivera is just the right person to turn this franchise around. That said, for his own wellbeing and safety, I really hope he sits the season out.
 
I think it’s obvious that ‘Plan B’ would be Jack Del Rio who is a proven capable head coach. As far as being immunocompromised that will depend a lot on his treatment protocol.
 
First thing I thought of when I read this is Governor Hogan here in Maryland. He still governed through his treatment of stage 4 Lymphoma.

STATEMENT FROM THE WASHINGTON FOOTBALL TEAM:​

Coach Ron Rivera was recently diagnosed with Squamous Cell Carcinoma (SCC) located in a lymph node and detected from a self-care check. This cancer is in an early stage and is considered very treatable and curable, providing a good prognosis for Coach Rivera for a full recovery. Coach Rivera has consulted with leading Doctors and Oncology Specialists and is establishing his treatment plan in conjunction with the team’s medical staff and his outside physicians. For now, Coach has asked that the team keep things business as usual and remain focused, but a “Plan B” is in place if it is determined that he should take some time off.

Coach Rivera wishes to extend his thanks to the team doctors and athletic trainers, and all of the healthcare specialists who will be assisting him through his treatment plan. In addition, Coach Rivera wishes to extend his heartfelt thanks to the Snyders, coaches, players, staff and fans of the Washington Football Team, as well as his family for their love and support during this time.

The Washington Football Team wishes Coach Rivera a speedy recovery, and we will be supporting him every step of the way.

So from all the info I have seen, he has a type of skin cancer that spread to a lymph node...I had never heard of lymph node cancer so I assumed it was lymphoma, which is far worse than what he has, Squamos Cell Carcinoma.

Sounds like they caught this early and it should not be as demanding as I thought when I first saw the news. If it is in the early stages, as they say, this is very treatable.

If he is as tough as my 76 year old mother battling stage 4 neck cancer, then he will be just fine.

That’s pretty cool, I didn’t realize the staff cheered like that at the end. Very awesome & I hope they do that with everyone finishing treatment
 
They do as far as I know. its a tradition when you have your last treatment.

I BELIEVE that's the tradition, that they get cheered and ring the bell of hope at the end of the hall.
