Haven't really been around the boards that much lately, but legendary Bulldog's post brought me back to the game which made me a Redskins fan at 6 years old. It was actually December 1973, and my mom and dad were jumping up and down screaming at the TV as Sonny led the comeback and it looked like fun.One of the first games I remember from RFK in 1974 was being with my father and being demonstrably upset that the Redskins were being beaten at home by the New York Giants, 24-3 in the third quarter.
Allen sat Kilmer before the start of the fourth quarter and #9 came into the game and everyone stood up.
A quarter later the Redskins had come all the way back and won the game 27-24 late.
That was my most lasting memory of Sonny Jurgensen as a player. My father said I should have seen him in his prime throw the ball.
Remember being forlorn the next week as we got demolished by the Cowboys, and then a few weeks later by the Vikings in the playoffs.
Around 1975 I was taking karate at a school in the Mt Vernon area of Alexandria. One day I didn't feel up for taking class, but decided to ride my bike to the school and watch from the lobby. One of the kids in my class was Mike Jurgensen, but I had never made the connection. So I enter the lobby and there he is, watching his son take karate. To an 8 year old, there was God....and then there was Sonny. I must've embarrassed myself with my fawning that day.
RIP #9
