Coaching in the NFL visibly wears on people--similar to being the POTUS.

Long after he left DC, I remember one season where it seemed like every game Norv and the Chargers had came down to a last second field goal.

"And now, we take you to bonus coverage, where Norv Turner's Chargers are going to lose on the last play, and a little piece of Norv will die right in front of your eyes."

That poor guy aged what seemed like eight years in one season. The body and mind can only take so much, and the stress at that level can be insane.

The same with Shanny. Prior to coming to DC, I often remember him standing on the sideline, watching a last second field goal attempt in some crazy AFC matchup late in the afternoons.

Yea I'd have some sympathy if the guy had any sense of accountability whatsoever, but it was the exact opposite; hubris in the face of abject failure and the repeated mantra of "what we do works". Plus he's gotten payed a kings ransom at every stop, payed a ransom to fail. Nope, zero sympathy in fact there are only a few are targets of disgust that rival him for me, guys like Belichick (marriage wrecking douchebag) and anyone at all related to the Cowboys.

I just saw this...

Turner probably will have a good rookie quarterback -- Trent Dilfer or Heath Shuler -- to work with

THAT made me cringe. I'm forgetting that draft, but were those seriously the 2 top prospects?

I gotta wonder how good Trent could have been with better direction. Norv probably could have done him well...even with his ceiling. Trent was not a bad QB, he did win a Super Bowl (Even if all he had to do was steer that truck straight).

Yeah, Trent would have been better than Heath, but then, so would have been a whole lot of other choices. No one could have foreseen just how bad Shuler was going to be--he was no more a shock than a guy like Akili Smith or Blake Bortles going top five.

Trent was awful on an awful Tampa team, but morphed into a serviceable game-manager type once given a chance to play on a team with arguably the best defense in NFL history. Right place, right time.

I like him a lot more now that I did then. As a color guy/analyst he often has a fresh take and resonates with me.

Mike Ditka should have been able to foresee how bad he would be, before he traded for him !
