Redskins Sign College Free Agents

DY is still a free agent. If we had used him improperly, certainly one of the other 31 teams would have taken advantage of our stupidity. So why hasn't he been signed?

A much more realistic, but less entertaining explanation is that the FB position has been phased out of the league over the last several years.
I'm not saying your Heroburger is the only guy who doesn't like the FB position. Just that, on this team, DY was one of the productive players, poorly used, while transitioning to Gruden's rigid, my way is the only way, system.

BTW, Ladell Betts hasn't signed anywhere yet either. ;)

AH YES, lol back to the original conversation about the full back.... haha sorry didn't mean to go off in a separate direction.

I don't see why the hatred and vitriol towards a player who single handed won us a game against the Chargers, did whatever was asked, and was nothing but a class act the entire time here. Is it because Gruden is to blame and you're defensive of him?

I hope my explanation did not come across as hate towards DY. I really like him and wish he was still here, just trying to hypothesize on why we would release him and pick up an UDFA.

Winning the division? I'd say DY was used very effectively.

Unless you would have preferred benching Jordan Reed in favor of using a FB more.

No one hates DY. It's just that NFL teams prefer to use 1 RB, 3 WRS and a TE more.

Even the most hardcore running teams with great RBs, like Minnesota, have thrown the FB position out the window.

DY was great both on and off the field. His position is just becoming extinct.

nah, not you. I know you like the FB and have never dogged him. I just don't get why people assume that when Morris has his worst year as a pro, our FB is not used at all, and our rookie has fumbling/health issue that it is all on them but not the coach.

I don't think ANY of it is on DY... I just think he was an outstanding accent to a system that we don't run anymore... therefore his value by default drops. He's not tall enough to be moved out of the backfield regularly, and we don't run many multi-back sets anymore. He's the perfect fit out of the I-formation or in a read option system where he can be a threat out of the backfield, or a secondary blocker. I wish we had a way to use him, sincerely, but if the system doesn't have a need, then occupying a roster spot for a lack of need is unnecessary.

No need to get all uppity because someone doesn't faint with approval of all things Gruden.

And, using this er um, logic, why didn't we win the division in Gruden's rookie year, since we apparently used DY effectively then too?

Exactly. A ridiculous association.

yeah, except that pesky super bowl team in Carolina and that expendable Mike Tolbert....right? Even Denver drafted a fullback in this years draft because they want to get back to the importance of having a good one.

Teams have been getting away from the FB position for years now. That isn't even debatable.

Just google it. You'll find dozens of articles saying why.

Minnesota just ditched the position. A FB would help Peterson get more yards. They don't care.

There are a few teams, the very few that use zone-blocking like Denver and Atlanta that are the last of the Mohicans.

No one's uppity. I love the entertainment.

If you prefer DY over Jordan Reed, that's certainly a valid argument.

It's not one that many NFL teams would agree with, but they could all be wrong just like McLovin appears to be.

McD, the bottom line is that until Gruden proves he can run a successful rushing attack, something he has failed at miserably in the pros so far, it's fair game to question him.

Frankly, if we cut Garcon tomorrow, I'm not sure there would be the outcry over it because Gruden's passing game has looked really good.

But he has been clueless at best running the ball, which means that people are going to question when a good player is let go.

Just the way it is.

actually, it IS debatable and we ARE having a debate about it. Minnesota is NOT the be all end all of running teams just because they have AP. You say last of the Mohicans in Denver and ATL but you don't even mention Carolina who is the #1 using team of a FB in the league. I can't get that logic

Malcolm Johnson - Cleveland
Cory Harkey - LA Rams
Jerome Felton - Buffalo
Jovorskie Lane - Tampa Bay
Anthony Sherman - KC

oh, here. I don't want to copy the entire 20 fullbacks.

B/R NFL 1000: Ranking the Top 20 Fullbacks from 2015 | Bleacher Report

I browsed over that article earlier this morning. I don't have time to go through each player now, but I'll bet the FBs in the middle of that list barely have any TDs or yards.

It's a simple preference across the league that a scoring TE is more valuable than a blocking FB.

I get that part Goal. I also get that Callahan is supposedly the one within the team that doesn't like FBs.

I also get that one thing we used to lure Callahan here was to give him a voice in the running game.

If other teams really do value a great FB like DY, why is he still a FA?

Gee Wally! Why do you keep makin stuff up? Just because I don't get weak in the knees every time your boy farts doesn't give you an excuse to imagine I said something I didn't. But, if playing with yourself makes you happy, then, by all means.

McD, I don't think teams value FBs, I'm not arguing that with you. I think that trend is clear, though perhaps not to the extent that you do.

The fact remains that our running game is bad. Not average. Bad. I don't care how you want to spin it, if Gruden himself was in this thread, HE would tell you it falls on his shoulders (I hope he would anyway). As HC, he is responsible.

Getting rid of a player who has performed well in the past and appears to have more in the tank seems questionable, especially given that we haven't added many pieces this offseason to the running game/OLine.

I don't think it's unreasonable to question that Young's departure is addition by subtraction as you are evidently arguing.

Getting rid of a player that has a proven positive track record in an area that we have struggled with (to be kind) seems... weird. To me, anyway.

So, what you're saying then, Goal, is that you'd rather have Ladell Betts playing QB?

Hell yes!

With Ladell at QB, and Gruden as Head coach, we'd win the next 27 Super bowls.

Minimum.

when have fullbacks ever been known to get a lot of yards? Its a simple preference for YOU, not the league. Carolina went to the super bowl with a great FB and credit him for a lot of the running success.

Blame Callahan but nothing on Gruden....I don't get how you claim Gruden is such a genius if he can't even control his assistants.

Why do you think that DY not being claimed has anything to do with anything else besides a need from teams at the moment? You think his career is done?

Obviously, no team currently values a 29 year old FB, or he'd be signed.

I think his NFL career now hinges on someone else getting injured. If that doesn't happen, then it's retirement or the CFL.

I'd be more surprised if a team did re-sign a 29 year old FB. There's not a big demand for that.

Sign him on a one year deal, or bring in someone much younger that might be here three years from now? I'm not sure what's so surprising about that.

sooooooooooooo....now your angle is his age?

I wanna keep track here

1 - moving away from FB
2 - Callahan's fault
3 - age

what's the next one when you realize that a 29 year old FB who hasn't shown any signs of slowing down or injury is cut?

I'm not sure where the confusion is.

1. He's a FB. That's a dying breed.
2. He's 29.
3. No one else is the league has signed him.

So why would you think Scot would re-sign him?
