Get rid of a FB and sign an undrafted FB... ?

Nick

Practice squad eligibility being the difference? Or knowing going in that he's got almost zero chance to make the team, and is being brought in to be camp fodder.

I am gonna miss DY, love that guy and how he plays

Could Richmond Spider Diggs 6'4 200lb 4.5 40 replace Grant?

There could be some thought to trying him out at TE?

Darrel Young was an UDFA, just like Kerridge.
In fact, DY played ZERO Fullback in college, and ZERO offense, in college. So many could have easily said he had zero chance of making the team as a FB when he was signed. So, Kerridge is already ahead of him, compared to the same stage in DY's career. So, how could anyone say Kerridge has zero chance of making the team ?
By the way, has anyone seen his highlights ?
He blocks like a bulldozer.
He's like having a Brandon Scherff in the backfield.

London Fletcher was an UDFA. I know it's not common, but I never count these guys out with McLovin taking some shots.

I suspect that he'll hit on a few of these guys over a long period of time.

Also, if you look at the numbers, an undrafted FB has a far better chance of making a team, than a LB, or almost any other position does. ;
simply based on the amount of times that teams spend a draft pick on a FB, compared to most other positions.

Without even looking, I would bet if you looked at every position drafted in an entire league's draft, the FB would have been taken a fraction of times, compared to most others. Teams are less likely to spend a draft pick on a FB, than say a HB, LB, or CB, etc. Which means a lot more talented FB's will fall undrafted, just like punters and kickers do, and still make the team.

So, to say a FB has little or no chance of making a team, simply because he was undrafted, is almost like saying a punter or kicker has little or no chance of making a roster, simply based on not being drafted.

And I know some still think or say, "Yea but part of the reason this FB has little chance of making the team is because Gruden doesn't like to use FB's"....The answer to that is, how often has Gruden or McClue been so predictable in their decisions ? How many people come close to correctly predicting Gruden's QB decisions, or McClue's draft or FA decisions ? With Gruden and McClue, you just never can set in stone what they're going to do.

Gruden is very predictable.

Knowing what he prefers, verses him finally growing the balls to say it out loud and then do it, are two different things.

DY was just another player who was used poorly by Gruden & Co.

Any FB will have to "Wow" him, personally, to get much playing time.

Please don't lump these guys together. A 5-11 record this year means one will be hitting the road and the other will be shopping for his replacement.

On the other side of that, another .500 or better season pretty much locks these two together for a decent amount of time.

Absolutely, I was more throwing that out there speaking as a hypothetical from their standpoint. I never wanted to let DY go. I'm just saying that their mentality might be that a position they have essentially phased out for the most part, could be less expensive with a kid who looks to be a much stronger blocker then other skillsets, with the need to pass catch and carry the ball being a minimal. We also have a crowded TE field, with rumors coming out of camp are that Niles Paul has bulked up, and has been taking snaps out of the hybrid H-back type position, including lining up in the backfield. That would all lead me to guess (all opinion) that the case could be made that the ability to put this kid on the practice squad for a season while Vernon Davis is here, allowing us to develop him and transition him, without leaving DY sitting on the bench.

Because he went with Kirk Cousins who set a franchise record for passing yards and a division title?

Because he went away from Alfred Morris who got picked up by a team that also drafted a RB 4th overall... In addition to that Morris' contract is 2 years, 3.5 mil, with 1.8mil guaranteed. A contract to me that doesn't scream "all pro RB." Something is missing with him. I LOVED Alf, and wish him all the best, but something was clearly lacking. I thought it was not getting enough carries, but 30 other football teams looked at him and saw the same thing our F.O. did.

Because he started Morgan Moses at RT instead of Sherff, and I've seen quite a few people who know more about football then anyone on this board, say we've locked up our bookend Tackles for years to come, as well as viewing Sherff as a day 1 better then average guard, with plenty of room to get even better?

Because he moved a rookie WR to CB who ended up substantial starter?

Gruden pissed me off big time when it came to how he handled Griffin and Morris, but damn if he hasn't been right more then he's been wrong in 2 years. From everything I've seen, the need for a FB is minimal in his system for anything other then primarily blocking.

Also... how do you, me, or anyone else know that this wasn't McCloughan letting DY walk, and not Gruden?

Almost every team insider said during Gruden's rookie year, that he preferred Cousins. And, even with the authority of a guaranteed multimillion dollar contract, and the fact he would have been hailed for going against the owners wishes, he lacked the balls to make the move, then. Mr. McGloo must have kicked him in the nuts when they first met, cause his balls got bigger.

Because he's never shown a dedication to running the ball, anywhere. Regardless of the RB. McGloo hasn't fixed that predictable Gruden flaw, yet. I've got my fingers crossed though.

Morgan? The guy that, when they drafted him, they said he would be a starter after some seasoning? Very predictable. In that, most good coaches take the input/advice of their position coaches on players skills, and how best to use them. Only innerwebz GM know-it-alls were shocked/surprised Scherff was moved to guard. Or that Moses developed as predicted. And again, getting your best guys on the field is a coach's job. Very predictable.

Dumb luck. Here's a kid that, nobody, including Gruden, thought had a snowball's chance in hell of making the team as a WR, used as a body double in practice, and discovered yet unknown talent. That's the unpredictability of life, not Gruden.
But, Gruden does receive some credit, since it happened on his watch.

Also... how do you, me, or anyone else know that this wasn't McCloughan letting DY walk, and not Gruden?
I don't think there's a good GM that ever lived, that would get rid of a guy that his head coach really wanted to keep. FB's are less important than RB's are, to Gruden. I hope Jones, or Marshall, or someone off the street can, can get him to be more dedicated, and better at, using the run game. Even in this pass happy league we're in.

But he did... Griffin hurt himself against Jax which sidelined him, then given the job back when healthy, then benched.

Chicken or egg here. We've had our fair share of struggles running the football early in games, and the passing game has been successful. The beginning of the season last year was dedicated to running the football and it was effective. At that point the bottom fell out. There was no production up and and down depth chart. The passing game on the other hand was flourishing. Why are you going to continue to do something that is unsuccessful at the expense of an effective passing game. A passing game that continued to be successful for the entirety of the season. Cousins was arguably THE BEST statistical QB in the NFL for the 2nd half of the season, WHY would you take the ball out of his hands?

So he has a guy who has been viewed as a talent, capable of becoming a starter in the NFL, and he gives him the opportunity to get starts and develop... AND HES SUCCESSFUL!?! Gruden got KILLED for putting Sherff at Guard last year saying 'YOU DONT TAKE A GUARD IN THE FIRST ROUND.' I also remember quite a few people saying Moses was washed up already and he's a bum. That he'd never be a starter in the NFL. Well guess what, now they're both on the field, they're both young, they're both developing, and they're both very solid pieces.... if he makes predictable moves and they work out, THATS A GOOD THING.

So the kid works out, Gruden makes a good decision to actually give him playing time, and he gets credit because he happened to be in the building when it happened? Come on.

I am with you, I'd like to see us run the ball more, but more importantly then that, I like seeing us winning football games. If we're gonna win more games then we lose by not handing the ball of a single time, I'm perfectly ok with it.

DY was just another player who was used poorly by Gruden & Co.

DY is still a free agent. If we had used him improperly, certainly one of the other 31 teams would have taken advantage of our stupidity. So why hasn't he been signed?

A much more realistic, but less entertaining explanation is that the FB position has been phased out of the league over the last several years.

But he did... Griffin hurt himself against Jax which sidelined him, then given the job back when healthy, then benched.
I said he did. But he lacked the balls to do it when he really wanted to. Which was by training camp of his rookie year.

The reason it worked better his first season, is because he kept many of the elements of the run game that existed before he got here. It's when he moved to his system that the run game started to tank. Let's not forget that. i do believe that with a year experience in his system, the players will do much better in the run game this year. We just have to hope Gruden remembers to use it.

The passing game on the other hand was flourishing. Why are you going to continue to do something that is unsuccessful at the expense of an effective passing game. Wasn't for the whole season though. After a bad start, and injuries to Jackson & Reed, the passing game came to life on the back 9. What we don't know yet, is if it was an anomaly, or a sign of how things are going to be. A good running game is essential if Kirk reverts, or gets injured. So no, I don't want to take the ball out a hot QB's hand. I want to enhance the potency of the passing game, with an equally flourishing run game.

Never said it wasn't a good thing. And I pay no attention to mediots or innerweb GM's who think where a player is taken has ANYTHING to do with performance on the field. Or if a kid is washed up simply because they (mediots & message board GM's) didn't like him.

So the kid works out, Gruden makes a good decision to actually give him playing time, and he gets credit because he happened to be in the building when it happened? Come on.
If he said the day Dunbar was signed, we believe he's going to make it as a CB, I'd give him more credit than, dumb luck.
And again, putting the best players on the field is his job. Truth be known, he probably didn't know a thing about him until he kept screwing up Jay's offense in practice.

I am with you, I'd like to see us run the ball more, but more importantly then that, I like seeing us winning football games. If we're gonna win more games then we lose by not handing the ball of a single time, I'm perfectly ok with it.
That's right.
