Draft DL in Round 1 for the 3-4. Look for a quarterback in Round 2 (Dalton, Ponder, Mallet) to develop in 2011-2012.

That's the way the draft board is shaking out in terms of talent. Defensive line has greater depth and top tier talent, there is no pure franchise passer.

There's a fairly good chance a qb taken in Round 2 or even 3 may end up being better in the NFL than the ones selected in Round 1.

its because we are trying to fill holes with limited resources that we have to take risks and cant play it safe we do not have that luxury. the point was not about anything specific (ie sanders) its about what we need to do in general, but you are so desperate to find something to argue with me that you grasp at straws,and throw lame little barbs that as usual you miss the entire point while trying to argue a piece of it.

Nice call BT. Judging from most of the mock drafts that I see it looks like this is going to be the way to go. Newton and Gabbert will be among the top 9 picks taken and so will the two top corners Peterson and Amaukamara. So that leaves five guys. The WR Green, and D-Lineman Fairley, Bowers and Dareus. And finally linebacker Von Miller. So that leaves us with everyone else in the draft. My question is do we take Robert Quinn and covert him to Outside Linebacker? Imagine Quinn on one side and Orapko on the other... or do we take a chance on Leuget DT from Illinois or Solder OT from Colorado or his teammate Smith who is a really good Cornerback. Or just go DT Watt or Jordon or whichever D-Lineman we like best. So chances are best Defensive Player (probably D-Lineman) round one and then QB round two. I like Andy Dalton out of TCU and Ponder out of FSU the best. Mallet scares me. Any chance Locker falls to round 2?

I like you Ryman. You have strong opinions, most of which are backed by good arguments and/or facts. However El is mostly on point in his assessment of your posting style. And I think he and I are qualified to make that assessment based on the old "takes one to know one" rule.

With that said I'll just point out that your proposal has a couple of flaws that you failed to take into account. First and foremost is the durability issue. If you have a backup that may not even be able to last for a game or two, do you really have a backup at all? Which brings me to the second thing you failed to take into account, i.e. opportunity cost. Even if Sanders doesn't cost us much $$$, he'll still be taking up a roster spot from a younger player that could develop into a starter for us or even a flawed but more durable vet that could be an acceptable stopgap for a couple of years.

well...my mind says DL in the first round and OL/RB with the other picks. but....the intuitive side says if the QB is there at 10 you take him...no questions asked. we have waited forever for a franchise QB.....the future needs to be on the roster yesterday.

A second round QB would be a waste IMO. Don't like what I have seen thus far. This would be throwing away a pick. If we are going to sabotage the team...at least take a chance on a player who can fix immediate problems with the second round pick. a first round QB sits on the pine as well, but the long term expectations are much higher.

The wild card is free agency.

If we do skip a QB in round one then I think we will have the options of Ponder, Dalton, Stanzi, Devlin, T. Taylor or Kaepernick. Some of these QBs we will be able to get even later than #42. Logic says that out of McNabb, Grossman and Beck that at least one of them will not be back in a Redskins uniform, so if you continue with that frame of thought then one of the QBs from above will be a Redskin.

The question is which one? And will one of them be our QB of the future?

I agree. I just don't think any of the characters available by pick 42 are worth the opportunity cost.

Well for 2011 I think we can all agree it is Rex Grossman, unless Donovan goes to the coach and says he will do anything young Shanahan wants him to.

As for beyond the 2011 season, I hope it is no one from the class of 2011 draft, unless we manage a third or fourth pick and a player like Kaepernick or Dalton falls. Then after addressing the holes up front on the line we can risk a shot on one of those guys, if we get a pick.

I just teared up a little as I thought about what we gave up for Jamal Brown and Donovan McNabb.
