I've lived in California for 25+ years now and have never had an issue with home/auto insurance. USAA ftw.

As for the State, I have not run in to or heard the issues mentioned above, but I suspect if they were uninsured that means no mortgage.

Of course, it's mostly the land that is worth those values. The home rebuild itself won't be nearly a third of price, I'd suspect.
 
I have seen multiple reports that those who have to rebuild (at least those who have been in those homes for many years) will face huge property tax increases that were previously throttled by law. True?

Sounds balmy! Here in Maryland, we got 3-6 inches of snow forecast Sunday, followed by 80 hours of temps in the 4 F to 21 F range.

I probably won't leave the house either!

It's complicated. Prop 13 in 1978 established that the taxable base for property tax couldn't increase more than 2% per year. So if these people had properties for a long time and were paying taxes on a base of say 1/5 of the real current value, they'll likely see a marked increase when they rebuild*.

*The caveat is that the law says if you rebuild in a similar manner to what you had, then you won't be hit with that big increase.

The question is, what is considered similar.

The idea behind Prop 13 back in '78 was probably good. But it's single handedly caused insane property values in the State by dissuading property sales and thus causing more demand than available stock.
 
Yeah, temps are dropping here, winds getting gusty. Supposed to be about 15 in the morning, brrr. I don't have to go anywhere today, but I will tomorrow.
Not looking forward to that.

I have a kitty that lives on my covered deck (Cameron, named after that hallowed place in Durham, NC 😉) and she won't come inside. I'm really scared for her tonight.
 
Our first cat was named Snowball. It was fine for three four years. Slept inside, played / hunted outside. But then my second daughter got born and had snot constantly pouring out of her nose. Pediatrician told us she was allergic to cats. Eff me. So I set up an electric blanket in the stable for him and put him out. Figured he'd be okay. Then one day he was out but not moving. He looked real sick. So, we took him to the vet. The next day the vet called and said he was dead. Dead from hypothermia. Turns out the electric blanket shorted out and went dead and I didn't know it. Still haunts me. Moral: Try to get the cat in if you can.
 
She won't let me touch her and I can't just stand there with the slider open. She's got a couple of blankets in a low beach chair, which is where she always sleeps and I can keep checking on her. I'm hoping she'll come to her senses and come in during the next couple commercial breaks. 🤞🏻
 
Question. Can files be retrieved of a desktop that died ? Computer had boot up problems once in a while. Had power go out, and when I tried to restart it, came up with a windows 10 issue. It tried to repair itself, but no dice. Will sit there with the little spinning thingie going as long as you let it. Figured I'd ask before I walk into a repair place.

Not that tech savvy but you should be able to pull something off of the HD. Probably have to get a new enclosure for it though to be able to read it via USB on another computer.

I suspect it's a little more complicated than that (what I posted above) but you should still be able to pull date off of it.

Shit, I had a tech (and everything else) in my bed for 20 years and I have no idea what you're taking about.
 
Mom going in for cancer surgery this morning. It's only skin cancer so I'm not really worried, but...
 
Atlanta does not deal with snow well.
Because we've been below freezing for what seems like forever, it froze instantly. I have the corner lot of my neighborhood, and it's on a busy road leading from I-85 toward Stone Mountain. People were stuck in the ice for hours. It's been a good show.
