Random Commanders Thoughts

I don't think anyone can argue the Giants are not improved. The head coach change alone is a huge boost. I have said on our most recent pods that we are going to see a much more competitive NFC East as the Eagles window of dominance is probably closing, Dallas is improved, we are certainly improved (at least on the defensive side of the ball), and the Giants appear to be getting some good things going. While there may be some questions about Daniel's durability currently, I doubt there are any NFL talent evaluators anywhere who wouldn't prefer having him under center over Dart.

Agree. On my end its a bit startiling to see the Giants being the new cool kid in the NFC East when it was Washington in 2025. Doesn't mean anything but lol shows how fickle the media is when it comes to buzz.

Some executives I guess agree, in that Athletic article about the off season post FA, they were higher on the Giants acquistions than they were Washington.

The Giants and Cowboys always get more love than they deserve. For each of the last twenty years, Dallas was always cited as Superbowl favorites even though they hadn't even won a playoff game in decades. New York isn't quite as favored a team, but they do seem to get an undue amount of optimism, too.

Exactly.

If things went the way these predictors always lean, the cowboys would've won 10 of the last 15 Super Bowls. 🤣

Indeed. So many cite the Cowboys on this. But the Giants are the sneaky #2 on this -- so much love from the media its nauseating.

There's a part of me that wonders if Harbaugh will pull a Shanny. Many had high hopes for Shanny because of his Denver legend despite the Broncos falling short of expectations a lot in the years prior to us getting him. Likewise, you can argue Harbaugh has not been hitting his mark in recent years. Was it the GM more than Harbaugh? When Ozzie Newsome retired did Harbaugh's star begin to fall?

Could be. And his big ego makes it easy to root against him.

I don’t think there’s a guarantee the roster would look obviously markedly better, the way AP has drafted. Just being brutally honest, I think he’s improving and can become a really good GM. He’s got the pedigree and makeup for it. But he isn’t yet, and everything this team has accomplished so far has been on the arm and legs of the QB (which AP does get credit for).

Always take the QB when the draft selection and the talent match up. You don’t know when you’ll get another chance. If in your hypothetical AP could have built a good, deep roster without the QB, he should certainly be able to do so around the QB, given all the sins good quarterback play can cover up (as we saw in 2024).
This is probably for the AP thread (and even the 2024 draft breakout thread maybe), however I think AP doesn't get the credit he deserves for the FA class of 2024. Literally every single one of those guys hit. And they were mostly either older vets or guys who hadn't worked out.

I also agree that he has the makings of a great GM, but isn't there yet. And maybe we jumped the gun a bit on his personal development curve because of the astoundingly good job he did in 2024 with FA. Daniels was clearly the key reason they had the season they did, and he elevated a lot of guys, but the guys he elevated at least had the ability to be elevated.

I have 3 main issues with Peters:
1. The 2024 draft class has not matured into starters except for Daniels.
2. The strategy in 2025 was actively bad. They needed to entirely overhaul the defense last year instead of trying to band-aid it, and it bit them in the ass (again).
3. He didn't get his guy in the HC search. Over the last couple of years, that's basically been confirmed. From the reporting, Quinn was at least 2nd on the list, given it's come out (if you believe the reporting) they offered the job to Macdonald and he chose Seattle. I don't know what happened with Ben Johnson or if he was first or not, they didn't have a second interview with him, but it's not a reach to think he and Macdonald were the frontrunners, and they both went elsewhere (Johnson just went back to his current home). So you get your 3rd place (at a minimum HC in the first real task, that's not great either. I don't put ALL of that on Peters. But he is in charge of football ops, so it's on his room bill. And I personally like Quinn probably more than most. But not getting your guy is not a good look.

I can forgive the Lattimore trade, applaud the Tunsil trade, not care one way or the other about the Deebo trade. The 2025 draft class looks promising. We'll see about 2026. And I think the 2026 FA class has a lot of potential, we'll see what happens.

However, he has a lot riding on the 2024 class breaking out. Because if you basically go 1-5 on Johnny Newton, Coleman, Sinnott, Sainristil and McCaffery, that's a tough look for my guy. (Binge Mode quote there.) And right now you could argue he's 0-5, though Coleman and Sainristil had good rookie seasons, they both had bad sophomore seasons.

Watching him glorify and fondle the balls of a franchise that has been ass for so long, and markedly less successful than where he just came from, is so odd. Usually a successful coach comes in and sets the expectation that his brand of football has arrived, because what came before wasn’t good enough. Here he’s weirdly placing the fact that he’s in the room with NYG players on a pedestal. Not sure I’ve ever seen it before. Very cringe and the players didn’t seem to respond to it, but who knows.

This is the sort of shit you say to a guy like Mara to kiss his ass and get hired… not to the bad, unproven roster you got hired to change and fix.

Very very weird

ESPN‘s favorites. Cowboy + Giants = Yankees + Red Sox. It’s truly vomit inducing 🤮

Also vomit inducing. Giants will be a dismal failure under Harbaugh. The game has passed him by. He’s an old school coach trying to manage young divas who’ve already stamped themselves as legends despite not even managing to stay on the field for an entire season. Meanwhile, the media have stroked the fan base into a frenzy and it’s gonna get real ugly really fast for Mr. Harbaugh when they start 2-7.

Nabers is legit. Scattebo is one to keep an eye on, but I think all the Dart praise is putting the cart way before the horse at this point and the Giants overall would need a franchise QB-like performance to be a playoff team.

Nabers had a really serious injury and might not be ready for the start of the season.

He needed a second surgery for something becuase the first one didn’t entirely fix the injury.

He might be legit. He might, unfortunately, never be the same. Which would be really unfortunate.

Scat-scat also had a season ending injury, but appears ready to go for training camp. He’s got the moxy thing going for him. He’s pure effort and try hard. I like his game but I don’t think he’s going to threaten to be a top 10 back. Probably in that next tier. Maybe, as GMSM once said of Kirk, the best of the good.

I'm sorry JP - but it's a dumb argument.

You can win games without scoring a touchdown too, but that's not the recommended plan. I know folks are tired of the discussion but it doesn't make a strong WR room less optimal than a weaker one :)

I have decided to just stay out of the FA thread because it's basically turned into hand ringing about the WR2 position. I just can't handle it anymore.

My request: can we not turn this thread into another thread on the WR2?

And I'm going to show extraordinary restraint, which for those who know me, is rare, and not even comment on JP's post. (Gads, this is hard.)

To be fair, nothing any fan ever says about anything affects the team. Start new thread topics. I don’t know what else to say :ROFLMAO:

I did! I started the 2024 draft class breakout thread!

Everybody ignored it to go into the FA thread and have a group therapy session. :p
