Can still turn out well, but it IS reminiscent of trading down from Tyler Lockett to then take Jamison Crowder.
 
The problem with kickers is that chasing the 'hot hand' (or in this case, foot) often doesn't work out. We have moved on from any number of kickers over the years who ended up having very good careers. With very few exceptions, most kickers will go through stretches where they struggle. I would prefer we sign someone like Gay and watch him over a sustained period. I posted his career stats previously and from that vantage point he is an above average kicker. It's hard to be 'patient' with any kicker when the perception is that a bad stretch may be costing you wins. But I think sometimes that is a better strategy than constantly looking for your 'next' one.
 
The question that flows from that question is when a vet kicker starts to lose "it"{ how often do they regain" it?"

I really don't know. I think many of the kickers we think of who went on to stellar careers had gotten their first shots here, but weren't grizzled vets with a long track record elsewhere. I do wonder with the dynamic kicking rule if a guy like Siebert (sp or memory) who started out so strong with us last year before getting hurt would have been a better option. Wasn't he perfect before the injury. I guess his downside was range.

Hope Gay gets it together, but he was shaky in the preseason and even though his misses are from 50+ it feels like 50 is supposed to be makable these days.
 
Keeping in mind, I'm not a shill for Matt Gay, I'm just trying to make a point about moving on from kickers especially with the idea that 'selling low' is the way to go...

First of all, Gay is 31. The average age of starting kickers (at least according to AI) is 29+. Gay is no doubt on the back half of his career, but I'm not sure he's a 'grizzled' vet - yet.

Secondly, he's had 3 FG attempts in 2025. All of them have been 50+ yards. I don't care about 'struggled in preseason'. I think judging any kicker, new, old, young, grizzled, whatever, based on 3 kicks is sort of a useless exercise.

Your point that 50 yarders are makeable is dead on. I believe over 70% of 50 yarders were successful in 2024. That was a record result, but Gay's current 33% success rate is unacceptable.
 
If the Commanders are in the position the Cowboys were in against NYG, most likely it is an L. So the Cowboys in that position against any team have a huge advantage compared to the Commanders in that position. Ok 60+… but even 50+? As you said Boone - it needs to be unacceptable. There is something broken in the K evaluation. Originally, I thought Seibert proved the exact opposite.

I definitely get this one.

When the commish read the card at pick 36 I was certain he was going to read Cooper DeJean. I was shocked the calll was Johnny Newton. We were in real need at CB and he was such a highly ranked player and #1 on my board by a bit. As a plus he was a solid returner, seemed like a no brainer pick, especially after dealing with the Forbes fiasco.

DeJean was surprisingly still available for us at 40, then they announce a trade with Philly so they could grab him. Ouch

Well we did end out with Mikey who has been very good along with other selections made it feels better. Only time will tell if it works out
 
Gay is 60.4% on his career from 50 yards and out. That's less than last year's record breaking 70% league wide, but it's historically on par with league averages during the time he has played. There are not many kickers you'd feel good about on any given kick beyond 60 yds.

All that being said, Gay is underperforming at present and needs to get it together. It would also be nice if our offense didn't suck requiring a kicker to bail us out :)

I don't know about this, not sure Cooper Dejean could do what Mikey did last year on the outside. With Slay gone and the Eagles struggling it doesn't even look like Dejean was a thought of lining up outside. Cooper will give you a highlight hit or get a int sitting in zone coverage but I have seen nothing to suggest he is better than Mikey in coverage. Thats just the eye test maybe you can prove me wrong with some pff stats but again he is lining up only in the slot and is a small piece in a much better defense where he has legit super starts all around him.

DeJean in the NFL has not been proven yet - as far as I know, he has rarely lined up outside unlike Mikey. You can debate his draft position based on what we knew then, but as an NFL DB I think he has been asked to do less (and thus proven less), at least from my perspective.
 
After the Atlanta game we have the Chargers on the road and the Bears at home. I think both are going to be tough games

Chargers games in San Diego there were always more fans for the other team. And now they are in LA, where almost nobody is a Chargers fan and the fans in San Diego hate LA so they usually don't want to go that far to see a game.

Amen. If he keeps chopping wood, he'll get more looks. His run to beat the safety to the end zone showed off his speed.
 
The KC game doesn’t look as daunting as it did before the season.

Hell, the entire AFC West doesn’t look as good as expected.

skinsinparadise a while ago you said the Chiefs would probably be better than the Jets when I said “you never know who’s going to be good.”

Both could easily be 0-3 after this week and honestly from what I’ve seen, the Jets might look better right now. Might not stay that way but the Chiefs have their hands full with the Giants at the moment.
 
KC should have both Rice and Worthy back by the time we play them. Also KC, like most of the best teams, gets better and better as the season goes along. Too bad we didn't get them week 2 instead of the Packers.

I think some of this is because it's September, which tends to feature a lot of inconsistency in the quality of football being played. Tons of overreactions and proclamations made based on tiny sample sizes. Every expert wants to be the one who is ahead of the curve of predicting the next trend and there is so much commentary thrown around that takes a week or two to be wrong.
