Jon pretty much took both of the teams to the super bowl that year and was always very well respected
 
But after 2002, not much. Didn't win another playoff game in Tampa and the recent stint with Oakland showed perhaps some of the worst personnel moves in recent NFL history. Mike Lombardi did a review of the draft and free agent pickups during Jon's time in Oakland under Mark Davis and the record was eye-opening in terms of the misses.

And of course his old friend Bruce Allen threw him under the bus by releasing all of those damning emails Jon was writing to force him out there.

I think he was a guy like Weeb Ewbank, the coach of the 1969 Jets, that won the Super Bowl and rode that one win for the balance of his career.
 
There was someone else on that Jets team that rode that one game the rest of his life ...

I think Gruden gets play because he is ‘available’ and is pretty good at not couching his opinions. I wonder how many other former head coaches are regulars on sports talk shows in their former markets?

One tell about the local shows would be if they continue to give Doc Walker a platform if the team becomes successful some decade.
 
As bad as Ron is as a coach in today’s game, he is much worse as a GM. I don’t know how Harris keeps him around over the last month. Maybe they will fire a Marty each week to please the fans.
 
The last thing any good ownership should do is cater to the whims of their fanbase.

Making any significant temporary changes this far down the river is like pissing yourself in a dark suit…It might feel good but no one is going to notice.
 
I think there's already an element of 'chaos' with the trade of two key players, and letting the DC go (in fact, if I'm Harris, I probably would've let Rivera know at that moment that firing Del Rio would not serve any purpose (hint, hint) and just to ride things out to the end of the season. I think there's more value in avoiding a free fall with complete team unraveling than any short-term benefit from making major changes.
 
I think Gibbs would recommend running the ball a bit more and taking Howell's attempts down into the 20's on a regular basis from the 40's he has been regularly in this season.

Of course his teams usually had cornerbacks that could play and keep the score under 40 on defense.

I feel bad for Allen coming from a championship program to a crap situation like this in 2017.

What he is not realizing however is that the 'rebuild' has essentially been ongoing for the past 5 plus years since the departure of Kirk Cousins as the quarterback.

The team has not had a winning season since then nor an offense that scared anyone in the league.

With a team on course for a 4-13 or 5-12 record how can this situation do anything but improve going forward?

Unless the new GM comes in and decides to clean house and trade Allen, McLaurin and several others for draft picks and really start over.

I wouldn't think a complete roster breakdown including those players is in the offing but you never know.

Michael Irvin and Nate Newton were the only two players Jimmy Johnson and Jones kept long-term from the Landry years in Dallas.

Although I will say that 2023 is not over and Ron has nowhere to go but down from here it seems.

I didn't see his comments on a rebuild although it wouldn't surprise me. I saw these two.....He's tired of building character and yep, he's thought about leaving because he wants to win. Maybe there were further quotes.

And that is my answer trade him in the offseason. I really like Allen but he has not played up to his contract and to what the team needs as a leader.
 
I think we have to grade this season on a curve. Almost every player on defense took a step or five back. I attributed a lot of that to coaching, but after the euphoria of Snyder being out and the first two wins, this team just folded. I suspect in the back of their mind they knew this team was a goner so the coaches didn't coach, the players lost their mojo, and the effort and mental sharpness just wasn't there. Now, that's not a reason not to cut everyone who couldn't find the will to fight, but I think there was something missing from the very beginning.

I bet with new coaches most of these players return to their previous level of performance.

I just glanced at the list and it looked like every coach since Norv.

My bad.
