Yep, the 45 year old Brady with offensive line injuries and no safety blanket in Gronkowski at TE looks mortal.

But who wouldn't like to see their team sign him to a bargain contract ($25M vs. $28 Wentz is making) and win a Super Bowl? :)

It was a great story in 2020.

Because Gronk coming to TB wasn't due solely to his boy being there?

Everyone has OL injuries. My point is a good one..thanks for reinforcing it :)
 
No, I agree that Brady at 45 is just about done, period.

But the circumstances came together for the Bucs in 2020 to make some magic and that's something any of us would want for our team.

As far as the OL goes, it does make a big difference to any quarterback. The big difference between the Chiefs and Mahomes winning in 2019 and losing the SB in 2020 was the fact 3 offensive linemen were on the IR.

Quarterback is a dependent position. A good quarterback can overcome a so-so offensive line and be productive, but you can't line up waiver wire quality players and expect ANY quarterback to be at the top of his game.

That's just unrealistic.

Stafford is in that position right now.

My guess is if Josh Allen lost 2 or 3 of this key linemen the Bills offense would not be nearly as productive through the air as it has been.

Shocking...it is almost like I said that exact same thing.

It's also crazy that I said he wasn't worth the contract and that no QB is. Could it be because they aren't capable of winning by themselves? No way!! That's crazy talk....oh, wait. That's what I did say.

Brady has always had extremely team friendly contracts. I don’t know how he does it, but he’s the GOAT of contracts too. His cap number in 2020 when they won the SB was 25 million. But last year it was 10.5 and this year just 11.8 million. That’s crazy considering these stellar QBs are making over 30 million this year, Tannehill, Cousins, and Goff. His number jumps next year, but I could see him retiring since he looks just about done.

As for the overall conversation on if a QB is worth it, the answer is no. But at the same time, what are your other options? If you have a great QB, you have to pay them. If you don’t, that’s how you end up with Alex Smith, Kyle Allen, Taylor Heinicke, and Carson Wentz. But other than the Patriots, you can usually track the downfall of each successful team to when their QB got his big money contract. It just takes so much money from the rest of the team.

You either have to have a true franchise QB or a serviceable one with elite talent around him. We have neither and there in lies the issue.

You are absolutely right.
 
That's the thing though, I think we have the talent level to field a dominant defense with only minimal additions right now (LB *cough, cough*).

I also think we have the weapons on offense that, if paired with a serviceable QB who can move a bit, we could be a much better offensive team than that Baltimore team
 
It’s going to take more than a mobile QB to mask the shortcomings and limitations of this awful OL.

And our DBs have played better but they are still bottom half of the NFL in terms of talent imho, it’s not just the LBers…
 
You are right, it is going to take better play calling, which I don't see us getting any time soon.
 
I don't think we will know that until the Injury Report comes out tomorrow.

Listening to Keim and Cooley talk about how open the middle of the field is when opponents dial up the zero blitz and they are running nothing to that part of the field…basically no hot reads.
Seems like we hear some version of this every year….

Well then, the question is whether the middle is open because no route runners are being sent there or whether the middle would be open regardless. If that's a vulnerability to exploit then it needs to be exploited. Certainly does feel like every time they try that short dump off to Antonio Gibson down the middle it's an easy conversion for a first down after ten yards YAC.

Wentz doesn't read defenses and throws picks in the middle of the field so you won't see Turner have confidence in him opening up those routes from the playbook.

As Brian Mitchell said it's dink, dunk and a 30 yard throw to the outside - that's the Washington offense with Wentz at quarterback.

That 'worked' the first couple of weeks when Wentz had some time to throw and could sit on the long routes, but with the OL injuries his productivity not only declined but absolutely cratered, and that's because the adjustments to time to throw are quicker routes and more precise passing - things Wentz is not productive at running.
