Random Commanders Thoughts

On the other hand, if the primary complaint is that your linebacker can’t cover their number one receiver and the offense keeps scheming to create that mismatch and you can’t identify or adjust. I don’t really fault the last mebacker.

I believe this team is told to tank games or to do the dumb stuff they do. There is no way that since spurrier we've only had one solid coach (Gibbs) that didn't consistently do things like this.

There is no way we are decades inept to winning. No freaking way!!

Well, the one thing we know is Del Rio wasn’t holding anything back on the preseason.

That blitz on the opening drive by Davis was nice.
I wonder why we don't do that more often with Davis, to take advantage of his athleticism.

Then when we stopped them on their 4th Down attempt in front of our goal line, was impressive.
But those things gave a false impression of how the game was going to go, from then on.
Good start by the Defense, but something happened, after that 4th Down play.
Something triggered an avalanche

It felt like once we were in the game, Del Rio called a defense designed to limit defensive mistakes rather than a defense designed to stop the opponent. I think he started playing it safer even though we were still behind and that he went back to the defense that, for the most part, was getting us killed in the first half.

There seems to be a narrative that our D isn't talented. I don't buy that. Payne and Allen are two very talented defensive tackles. Jamin Davis is very talented if raw (why he should be still raw after a full season and offseason under his belt is baffling to me), William Jackson was a very highly rated corner before he came here. Sweat is a very talented defensive end. Holcomb may not be a gamechanger, but he's not untalented. Forrest looks like he has talent (speed and power).

I mean I'm under know delusion that our talent rivals the 85 Bears, but I think this unit has plenty of talent to compete. Are they not because of fit? Because of scheme? Because of predictable and easily exploited play calling? Because of lack of hunger and hustle? Is it lack of discipline?

Regardless, this dodge that the D isn't talented rings false to me. If there are weaknesses that doesn't mean you can't play to your strengths. You shouldn't be so basic that every week you get your weak in space linebackers locked up on their best wide receiver. You should be able to clog running lanes against a third string offensive line. You should be making a QB fear for his life and play erratically if you have three first rounders against their third string line.

burgold - I started out really wanting to argue with you here but I just can't.

Honestly, I don't understand how our coaches can't design a defense that plays to our obvious strengths rather than one that seems to be emphasizing our weaknesses.

It's Del Rio. He rides talent but has nothing to offer in terms of tactics. I mean seriously, it's not like Goff was lighting the world on fire with pinpoint precision. Goff was also playing like the bust he is but even he can hit a WIDE OPEN Amon-Ra and guys in the flat.

Kind of reminds me of classic Norv. "Our scheme works." So, he goes with the scheme no matter who is actually on the team. Sadly, Norv proved his scheme didn't work when square pegs were expected to be round ones.

If you only blitz once or twice a game and constantly rush 4/ask linebackers to cover you're going to fail more times than not. It becomes deflating and you stop trying as hard as you normally would.

Where is Kerrigan with this DL?!

Getting Riggo' drilled is basically a matter of talent and off-season preparation. Getting Riggo drilled by Lions' backups is an abject humiliation and a cruel wake-up call that out "elite" Dline isn't elite at all. Allen is the only one close to that. Someone like Vita Vea or Akiem Hicks are real standouts who consistently impact the game; but I would not put him in the tier of Donald, Suh, Hicks, Vea, etc. Payne can be sometimes but not always.

I have no insight to give. I think we’d all agree that the defense is not playing to it’s potential. Whether it’s coaching primarily or a combo of things - I don’t know for sure.

Ironically, the defense early in the Lions game looked promising. We kept giving them the ball back in good field position and the D was limiting the damage. Even Jamin Davis was having some noteworthy success. But no NFL D is going to look good when the O is going 3 and out on multiple drives for an entire half and that even has ramifications in the 2nd half.

That's fair, too.

They had 3 injured OL starters and anyone who watched a single highlight from their game against the iggles knows Swift was running wild could have better prepared to stop the run.

Swift fell down on a bad pass, got up, and went untouched in to the end zone! That was a back breaker.

Disappointing from Jamin Davis …

I think their first couple scoring drives had 50 yard plays against us.
That's on the defense.
Then they had a 50 yard punt return.
That's on the Special Teams.
Then after the Safety by the Offense is when everything spiraled out of control, on the scoreboard
Just an all-around awful day in every regard

If it's controversial on social media, ya gotta take a screenshot of it, to make it last !
Love is forever.
And so are screenshots :)

I don’t disagree - just pointing out the defense held for much of the first half contrary to a lot of the critics out there.
