The Caps down the street have vaccinated player after vaccinated player testing positive. The Bulls just had to cancel games because 10 players tested positive despite 100% vaccination. The bottom line is COVID sucks and it’s hitting people regardless of vaccination status in the sports world. I’m not a Dr and I don’t have the answer. But I can see from all across the sports landscape that it really hasn’t mattered. Maybe these sports leagues need to be doing more than they are to prevent the spread within teams. The close quarters of a locker room seems to be the bigger issue as it is spreading throughout the teams.

Perhaps in the context of NFL and other pro sports, vax status ‘doesn’t matter’ because unavailability is based on positive tests not severity of illness (or even symptomology). And yes, the vaccine doesn’t prevent COVID transmission (technically) but it does prevent serious infection in most people. No one has enough data on the delta variant to claim anything - including myself. However early research is that folks who are vaccinated clear the virus more quickly and are likely infectious to others for a briefer period.

Setting aside pro sports rules and availability, vaccination offers the best protection from serious illness. A lot of folks won’t even acknowledge this despite ICU admissions being comprised of almost 90% unvaccinated individuals in most areas of the US.

We need to distinguish between ‘positive’ which is a test result and illness, disability (permanent in some cases, and death). It’s a sports forum and in that context ‘positive’ is key but in the grand scheme of things is irrelevant.

Can you test positive without being infected? Would that be considered a false positive?

Is the timetable for a players eligibility for return to play after testing negative affected by their vaccination status?

Positive is positive. To answer your question, not 100% sure but my understanding was if a player is vaccinated and comes up positive, 2 negative follow up tests are required for them to be eligible again, where an unvaccinated player is out a mandatory 10 days. That’s just what I’ve heard - could be wrong. I think that was the major reason teams were pushing for players to get vaccinated.

I’m not objective and don’t pretend to be. I cannot separate my experiences seeing almost exclusively unvaccinated people die where I work. I live in a rural area where folks continue to pretend there is no risk, don’t get vaccinated, go into crowded public spaces unmasked as if COVID isn’t real and glare at people who do take precautions.

I can’t separate my feelings about that from other topics. I should try harder especially when it comes to sports because it is about availability to most fans based on a test result which is a different discussion than what’s best from a public health POV.

One thing we can probably all agree on? This team is ****ed forever and that doesn’t seem to be anywhere close to changing in our lifetimes

Boone, I always appreciate your perspective on this because you work in the medical field and you see the worst of it. When discussing this here, I try to focus on the sports aspect of it because it is what is relevant to us as fans. And yes for athletes and fans, it is about availability because a positive test, a close contact, even a missed test means they are out for a certain amount of time. I follow the Caps as much as I follow the Football Team, so like others I have been scratching my head seeing player after player miss time because of this. That’s why I brought up the locker rooms because that seems to be the biggest issue with these teams.

Realizing all the injuries this team has had this far, hoping the GM conglomerate trades down for lots of picks this April. Hitting the lines like nobody’s business with several of those picks would be swell.

Further testing revealed that WFT TE Logan Thomas does in fact have a torn ACL as the team initially feared, per source. Thomas is expected to undergo surgery this week and return in time for the 2022 season.

Hate it for him (and us) but not surprised and it’s great that they conclusively determined it is torn. He could’ve gone into next season thinking it was good to go and then had it completely tear.

Not just that, they didn’t fine him either. Which blows my mind. When you watch the replay, you can see he’s just going to take him out. It’s away from the play. I’m not saying he was trying to hurt Thomas. But he definitely was intentionally going low to send a message.
