I suppose one of my biggest qualms is investing in re-doing contracts for mega-bucks for players that were already here in recent seasons and are over 30 or have an injury history.
We cut a number of guys with big cap numbers who were 30 years old and the last thing I want to do is be in the same place two years from now with others.
I have no problem with giving Williams or Dunbar some additional guaranteed $$, but I am not in favor of giving a 32 year old LT a contract for $17M a season. Not on a team that finished up 3-13 and is a couple of years away from contending, assuming we make the right decisions elsewhere in the draft and free agency.
Dunbar and Scherff are good players when they are available. Dunbar has only appeared in 18 of the team's last 32 games. Scherff has missed almost a full season with various injuries and is already going to be 29 during the 2020 season.
Scherff it appears was a bit older hitting the draft in 2015 than others like Ereck Flowers that are only 26.
Scherff when healthy is a nice player but is he a necessity to win with in 2021 or 2022?
The plug and play we have seen the Chiefs, Patriots, Seahawks, Broncos and others make during runs to the SB in recent years makes me leery of giving a 29 year old guard $70M guaranteed. People who mention Zack Martin getting megabucks from Dallas only make my point because despite the talent on the OL the Cowboys havent' won anything, last year they didn't make the playoffs.
I agree with a number of posters here that there seem to be a quantity of high level OL available this year in the draft going into the second and even third rounds.
If we take Chase Young to shore up the pass rush with perhaps the best overall player in the draft, perhaps we can trade back into the second round to find a OT candidate that can come in and be the future on the left side.
If we trade Trent and use him and one of our picks from 2021 we might be able to get back into the first round as we did last year somewhere around #26 or #28 overall and find his replacement.
Folks keep referencing the Eagles but Philly won the Super Bowl in 2018 and has a host of veterans on big money contracts who performed for them in the past. Their goal is to get back to the Super Bowl while Fletcher Cox, Lane Johnson, Barrett Brooks, etc. are still in Eagle green.
In some ways they are paying to keep their window open.
Forget the 'window', we have yet to reset a firm foundation to start building from.
