It really is silly that the entire 53 man roster is not available on game days considering the attrition rate that the entire league suffers from.

Completely agree.



The only thing that I feel restricts the expansion of the rosters to 60 or even more, is the players union. The players union and agents want their guys to get every single $ they can get, so adding 7 (or more) players to each team sucks up some of that available money. The dilemma comes if maybe having those extra 7 guys who can play ST could be the the difference in their client getting hurt or not... which is also a money killler.
 
It's strange that the NFL is willing to change just about every aspect of the game, but when it comes to an obvious need to increase team depth and roster spots, they doggedly refuse to address the issue. It's just common sense with the injury rates inherent to the modern game are so high. And yet nothing changes. It's very odd. I don't think cost is the real issue as the guys we would be talking about if they increased the roster size to say 60 or 65 aren't exactly making millions. The sum total cost would be chump change in the grand scheme of things. The NFL (and even the player's association) is hypocritical on this issue since the most obvious benefit of a major change would be giving players who don't have the 'pedigree' (players from smaller schools for example) a chance to make it at the NFL level.

For me, it's a no-brainer.
 
Totally agree. I've never heard anything approaching logical, as to the reasoning behind it.

My memory tells me that one of issues that led them to have inactive players, was an effort to try and speed up the games. All the substitutions were supposedly part of the problem, slowing down the games. But teams are a lot more efficient getting guys on/off the field these days. Well, unless Aaron Rodgers is on the field.

Anybody else remember that reasoning?
 
I'm not even talking about expanding the roster size. As it stands now only 46 of the 53 can dress on game day. There is no additional expense in allowing all 53 to participate, is there?
 
FYI. Here are several teams that will be over the cap or very close to it after the season. The Redskins could be in a good position to snipe three or four quality FAs.

Ok, Skins news. Because, Redskins.

 
The Y stick is a short route, usually straight forward for a few yards (or it can be a hook), that is designed to make the Mike linebacker react along with the Sam or Will (depending on which side the Y stick goes). The X or Z is the actual target. The Z is usually a fly pattern and the X is a slant route (like we saw with Crowder).

In such a scenario, the RB flares to the right or left as another option and the TE does the same, but opposite of where the RB goes.
