Random Commanders Thoughts

After Hopkins's miss this weekend, I've heard more people comment that he's becoming unreliable or he's not having that great of a season. I think he's had some inopportune misses, but overall has been pretty solid. But I'm more of a fact guy so I went to look up his stats compared to everyone else and here's what I found.

For the 2016 season:
#1 in FG made (#17 for 2015 season) (He has made as many this year as he attempted last year)
#1 in FG attempts (#17 for 2015 season)
#20 in FG percentage (#9 for 2015 season)

His misses by distance:
2 from 30-39 yds (10-12)
2 from 40-49 yds (6-8)
3 from 50+ yds (3-6)

Given 50+ is his weakest spot, I looked at how other kickers do at that distance. Four are perfect
Prater (6-6), Tucker (8-8), Hauschke (1-1), Parkey (1-1).
67% of the kickers are 50% or under.

XPs:
17th at (30-32). In comparison, 58% of the kickers have missed 2 or more. 7 are perfect. 6 have missed one. Prater who is 6-6 from 50+ yards has missed 3. Some have missed 4 or more.
 
Lots of commentary pregame in Philly about how 'dead' the balls were and/or how heavy the air was saying that Hop was having it tough at 40yds and out just getting the distance.

All an indication of Red Zone failure.
 
We are one win away from having a winning record in back-to-back seasons for the first time in 19 years. Let that sink in for a minute.

That certainly plays into it but not as much as I would have thought. In 2015 he was 16-16 from 1-39 yards. This year he is 19-21.

He's on pace to attempt quite a few more than last year. I think that probably says more about our offense being on most of it's cylinders from day 1.

I predict that Norman sees less than 2 passes in his direction. There is no way they challenge him. I know this is the Panthers and Cam Newton we are talking about, but even they can't be that stupid.

Ran across this tidbit, perhaps the enduring the growing pains of getting a running game going is beginning to pay off

Redskins Rushing- The offense rushed the ball 23 times for 107 yards, 5 first downs and 2 touchdowns.* It was the sixth time in the last eight games that the team has gone for 100 or more yards on the ground and averaged over 4.5 yards per attempt (not all in the same games).* They also ran the ball on 44% of the offensive plays for the first time in the last three weeks.* They have won every game in which they've hit that mark.* The rushing scores of 20-plus yards by Kelley and Thompson made them the first pair of Redskins teammates with touchdown runs of 20 or more yards in the same game since Ricky Ervin and Earnest Byner did it in Week 7 of the historic 1991 season.

Also mentioned, the offense had the fewest snaps of the season.
Probably because the Eagles kept going against our D and we had more three and outs than we're used to.

Ryan Kerrigan is 3rd in the league in sacks. He looks like he's lost a step, he's been battling injuries all season long, and we(definitely me) have under estimated his value to this team this year.

FFS, can we please go out and get an anchor for our DL...or 3 to help Kerrigan, Smith and Murphy become players they are capable of being! And please, can we switch back to the 4-3 since there are 2 NT's in the league capable of dominating the LOS in a 3-4 in the entire league and we do not have one.
 
I appreciate those stats on Hopkins regarding the breakdown of his attempts this season.

And sticking with the Kicking theme, I would love to see The Skins control the Field Position in this upcoming ballgame. Firstly, it will help out our Defense by giving them a long field to defend. And secondly, from what I understand, the Panthers aren't a Big Play Offense - this will aid in bottling them up on Monday Night. Lastly, it would be nice to see the table set with short fields for The Offense.

Overall, I would like to see our Special Teams step up with a strong effort this week (and is another Crowder Punt Return too much to ask for?)

I guess it reminds me of a time when the games were FAR more physical. More savage.

Good points Otis, I think special teams has been solid all season, but it would be nice for them to step up a little.
I don't really mind our O having a long field, it's where we excel. Red Zone is the issue and Special Teams can't really help us there.

The Panthers are a scary team to me. They're not what they were last year that's for sure. On either side of the ball.
But I worry about this Redskins Defense and players who are playmakers. We're so inconsistent. For every Rodgers and Beckham we stop, there's a Prescott, Johnson or Stafford that we can't.

Newton is the X Factor here. He's certainly capable of being that player who breaks a game with his ability, and the Panthers seem to be playing better than they did early in the season.

I expect a tough game.

On your other random note...

I made Mrs Wifey watch Super Bowl XXII a couple of months back to prove to her that the Skins were once glorious. What struck me was how big all the pads seemed to be compared to today's more streamlined look.

I also watched the movie "concussion" the other night. Gives good for thought.

Knightingale, I think we are in firm agreement in our expectations of a dogfight this Monday Night. I certainly don't expect the Panthers to roll over - nor would I. My instinct tells me that if we are indeed a Playoff Team, then this matchup is an excellent barometer for where we stand.

I'm talking about dealing with a tough, physical, talented Opponent's Defense & a Playmaking Quarterback. It seems to me that our Program has elevated to the point where we (as fans) should expect the fellas to take the fight to THEM. Heck, it's only our Playoff Lives on the line.

And as for the second aspect of your post, I would like to share my views on this issue. I hope you do not object.

I know that Pro Football is a violent game. It is also clear that the head trauma suffered by many while playing this game is life changing & permanent. Nowadays, that's common knowledge for those of us that follow the game.

However, we're talking about an existential threat to the game we adore. And I don't want to lose it; call me hard-hearted if you must. But what I want to see happen is for every dude that makes a roster to sign a waiver (just like in Youth Football) to play, & let's get back to Playing Football.

Of course still have the doctors & the protocol & all that, AND set up a fund for guys after their playing days are over (arbitrarily, say 5 years of playing in The League?) to help guys deal with the medical & psychological side of head trauma.

What truly worries me is that in this hyper-sensitive environment, Football could cease to exist as we know it. And I'm certain none of us want that.

Good stuff Om. Truthfully, I welcome the experts' picks - as I see it, that's the next step in our Program's evolution. If we're really poised to be a steady Contender, then Winning ballgames as the favorite is part of the deal. I believe that the fellas can handle prosperity perfectly fine.

I just hope FedEx is LOUD Monday Night!
