When rookie minicamp began almost three months ago, all eyes were on Redskins first-round draft pick WR Josh Doctson. Unfortunately, Doctson would impress before having a setback to injury.
There was another receiver, however, that caught the eye of media, players and coaches: Maurice Harris out of Cal.
Most Redskins fans know Cal as the collegiate home of Pro Bowl wideout DeSean Jackson, but now Harris is making the Golden Bears program proud. He possesses size that the team envisioned Doctson providing in the red zone and has been making plays.
Harris’ hands have been consistently snatching balls out of the air and at the point of attack. He also has shown speed in getting behind several defenders for big plays.
The rookie always envisioned himself as an NFL-caliber talent and now, with a preseason game this week against Atlanta, he can solidify himself as one with a few strong outings.
It will be interesting to see if the team carries the same six receivers from last year’s roster (who are in training camp) or if Harris will either bump one off or be added as a surprising sixth wideout.
If he continues to play throughout preseason the way he has in OTAs, minicamps and now the early part of training camp, coach Jay Gruden will be forced to make a tough decision.
