Random Commanders Thoughts

BPA, and how many draft picks do you think we had?

Had we drafted a C and DT, you would have asked why we didn't draft a safety or cornerback. Or why we didn't take a WR knowing that either Garcon or Jackson are likely gone next year.

Can't get them all overnight, especially if you hold onto guys like RG3 and Alfred in 2015 instead of dealing them for more picks.

We have two deficiencies going into the season, and neither has been addressed.
According to you.

Last I checked, you have nothing of meaning that qualifies you as any more knowledgeable about what actual team officials think of the situation than the man on the moon.

Trying to martyr yourself for being an attention addict is what you do best. Leave roster building to those who actually work at.

I'm on the record for having wanted a NT and/or guard/center through the draft/free agency.

It's difficult enough for me to have a differing view here without folks making stuff up about what I've said.

We have two deficiencies going into the season, and neither has been addressed.

Come on mate, your views are not all that different than the rest of us.

It's just a matter of degree in how we convey the views.

Kirk ain't no top 5 QB like he's paid to be.
We know but what other solution was available to keep Kirk in the fold to see if he continues what we saw for the last half of the season while setting team records for the position? Start over or see if he's the real deal?

Kirk can't do anything without Djax and is nothing but a backup somewhere else.
We all acknowledge that Djax can be a game changer but most concede that the Tampa comeback was a turning point in Kirk's development and direction of offensive strategy, Djax caught zero passes in that game and was he even available to do so?

Run defense sucks without a true NT and 'dinosaur' is nothing but BS.
We all agree that run defense sucked but was it only because Pot Roast did not pan out or was there something else going on and did they address that something else this off season? Powe and Golston are currently on the roster as NT's and the off season is not over.

Center/guard position not addressed in the draft or FA and all is lost without that position of dire need.
We all agree, did not draft or sign one, we also acknowledge that our Oline lost two starters to injury and swing guys were used to fill in. We need to at least upgrade our swing guys, we are currently trying to develop them.
Most feel that Kelly would have been drafted if he was available, he was not so we got BPA and even then he suddenly became a 'need ' position just for the sake of argument.

This is what I was responding to:
"Had we drafted a C and DT, you would have asked why we didn't draft a safety or cornerback."

Not true. I would have been delighted.

Understood, but not having been delighted on those two points shouldn't be cause for seemingly utter dismay over all else the team has done and forgo any possibility that some other way can work.

We're heading into just the second year of Scot's influence and we can't even begin to evaluate until the season is underway.

He's assembled a group that will show their stuff come training camp, some may surprise, come out of nowhere and become an answer to your concerns. Sometimes it's just how it works.

I wanted at least one of those areas addressed, too. But I'm gonna have to defer to the guy who has won with teams he assembled.

I think the Redskins will be looking to add a player or two to the roster before September.

One thing we have learned with Scot McCloughan is he never stops looking.

Everyone thought free agency was over, and then we were able to sign Josh Norman, possibly the biggest FA available in the offseason - who became a FA and was signed in less than a week.

Sorry, but OL and DT have been identified as team weaknesses. Unless someone can make a case otherwise, it's only logical to ask why we didn't address those weaknesses.

If it turns out we have a stellar run game this year, and a spectacular run defense, I'll gleefully apologize for doubting McCl...of course, if things don't go well, I won't begrudge anyone forgetting these posts.

Why does stellar and spectacular have to be the tipping point for you to acknowledge any improvement?

Suppose the run game on both sides of the ball only become average or better and the pass game on both sides approaches those lofty goals you've set. How does that fit your grand scheme?

I will guarantee one thing, there will always be weaknesses on this team that need to be addressed.

Even if we become the next dynasty of the decade, we'll always need the draft and free agency to replace those bits and pieces of weakness.

I think they have addressed it, no one was available....at least not to your liking. I still shake my head at the trade of our 4th round pick, when there were a few DT's that rated well enough to fill the position on the DL. However, the answer given is at least logical. No talent was available to us when we drafted.

End of the day, brother El, it comes down to your evaluation of DL's available vs Scot McCloughan's right?

Bottom line, yes. That's why I have come to accept the lack of any addition to those two needs. Not gonna pound that drum any longer. If I was clamoring for Scot to be hired, I have to trust his decisions. Don't have to like all of them, but not going to get all pissed off when he doesn't do what I say.

Pretty much exactly where I am at the moment.

Our NFCE opponents had off years last year. If we don't fix glaring needs, we're not going to get any better.

And, I'm getting older. I'd like to see another trophy before I expire.
Heh, this one just about covers all of the generalities we can put forth and yes I'm inclined to trust Scot's acumen on team building more than you are, it is what it is and there's no changing it.

I do agree, I'd also like to have my grandkids witness another trophy with all of us watching it happen.

2016 NFL draft: This is the year of the defensive tackle
2016 NFL draft: This is the year of the defensive tackle | NBC Sports
Rotoworld's Josh Norris examines the deep defensive tackle class and explains why Sheldon Rankins is currently the top ranked DT.

No, it wasn't because the talent wasn't there, I believe Barry really thinks we don't need one...well, we didn't need to draft one.

If you don't have a run-stopping defense at the end of games where you're behind by 7 or less, it's a bad thing. And, if you don't have an offense that can grind out first downs running when you're leading by 7 at the end of the game, that too is a bad thing.

It's been so long since we've had a defense that can routinely get 3 and outs that we all forget how effective it is.

Just saying.

Like I said, Scot McGloughan knows more than I do, so I will defer to him. It is most certainly a logical idea that Scot McGloughan did not feel there was a player worthy of the pic we had to fill that position that was more valuable than the player we chose.

Oh yeah, who is Josh Norris? Is he a writer on an obscure site or a top rated talent evaluator on an NFL team who has built other good teams?

Actually, this isn't that accurate. Over the course of the last few years with London Fletcher anchoring the defense, even as his talent was waining, the defense regularly created 3 and outs. The problem was the offense would go 3 and out and pout the defense back out on the field. Go back over the course of the 4 years prior to this past season, you'll see that the defense did not completely collapse until the end of most games. We regularly went into the 4th Q with a lead, only to have the offense fail to do it's job, placing the onus on the defense to save the day. I remember 4th Q's with 4 and 5 possessions for the opposing offense, having our defense stop them on the first 3 or 4 and falter at the end out of shear exhaustion, because we did not have an offense built to grind out a win.

Josh Norris is a pretty incredible success story.

He started out online, just evaluating players in upcoming draft classes, but with an insane attention to detail.

One team (the Panthers I believe) was so impressed with his work that they invited him to training camp one offseason.

He continued to publish his critiques--kind of like McLovin in that regard--and eventually caught the eye of NBC television.

He's now their top NFL draft guy.

He's an example of just a regular guy moving up from the internet into the realm of McShay and Kiper.

Take note, BB:)

2. Tight ends coach Wes Phillips: “I don’t think [Jordan Reed’s] hit his ceiling. For my money he’s maybe the most exciting player in this league. He does something every day of practice that makes the whole team just say, 'Wow.’ And these are NFL guys, these are elite athletes, and for him to be able to do that it really brings a spark to the team. Not only do we get a big play from him but it really gets guys juiced up and ready to go.”

Wow. That's pretty high praise. Here are some other quotes from the week:

In re the DL, what we have read from Rich and others is that Barry and Gruden are pleased with the performances of Ziggy Hood and Kendall Reyes so far at DE.

I don't know whether this is the straight up truth or just blow coming ahead of the post-June cut-downs where the team could be looking for a vet or two for DT and DE.

Hood did have some quality seasons in Pittsburgh early in his career before getting hurt. He was a Super Bowl starter against Green Bay. Of course Washington is betting Hood at 29 can re-capture some of that form.

Meanwhile, Reyes seems to be tied to Barry by the hip. He was a #2 draft pick who Barry got some real production out of before Reyes dropped off a cliff after Barry left for Washington.

PFF rated him as one of the worst DE's in the NFL last season in terms of the metrics of the position.

But at 26 and with good size, if the issues are from the neck up and Barry can get him re-oriented in a positive direction perhaps we caught a keeper in the opening days of free agency.

Very loosely Redskin-related.

With Cleveland's resounding victory over Golden State last night, Minneapolis now becomes the city with the longest championship drought amongst the four major sports.

A close second? Washington DC.

Twin Cities now has longest title drought* of major U.S. sports markets - StarTribune.com

The Twins were the last of the “big four” teams in Minnesota to win a championship, in 1991. Washington D.C. is close behind, with a Super Bowl in early 1992 (won in Minnesota, no less) being that city’s most recent “big four” title.
