Random Commanders Thoughts

If you didnt know the difference before you got in to this conversation that is something you need to seriously address. You don't disrespect ANY player to the media, but you definitely don't do it to ANY quarterback. Period. Point blank. Ask the "jackass kicker" in Indy what happens when you talk bad about a QB. its not rocket science even if it doesn't fit in to your mold of arguing and seeing truths.

your precious coached....was a ****ing disaster himself his rookie season. deal with it. i promise you will wake up tomorrow just the same as you did today.

Lol. How was he a disaster?

Because he called out RG3 once? That's not a disaster. Unless you consider the year prior 50x the disaster.

In his first year he steadied the ship. He stopped the drama. He began to replace crappy assistants with great assistants. He turned our TE coach into an OC. He developed the QBs very well. One now may be our franchise QB going forward, and he even made the other one look good enough to beat Dallas on the road on a Monday night.

That's not even close to a disaster. That's a lot of great stuff.

In fairness Mike, the team is a lot better now. Gruden has an absolute hand in the success. Other factors absolutely have a part, he's not the sole purpose but we're better. I agree with you that year 1 was a nightmare come true, and I still agree about the public handling of Griffin being bad, but the ship is starting to point in the right direction.

did that word hurt your feelings? Did it bother you that I called your guy out in front of the board with words you don't like?

he STILL hasn't steadied the ship, dude. the run game is abysmal at best, the defense is held together by WRs turned to CBs, failed pot roasts, and hopefuls. Outside of Reed and Cousins who really played good enough for you to be happy about?

But you wanna call it great stuff? Well....you do that then.

So tr1 has two accounts? Son of a..............

He steadied the ship immediately. All of the drama stopped the minute he walked into the locker room.

"the defense is held together by WRs turned to CBs" Is he the GM too? Or is that a Shanny/Bruce/McLovin/injury issue? That has nothing to do with the HC.

"Outside of Reed and Cousins who really played good enough for you to be happy about?"

It would be easier to list the players that haven't played very well. Reed and Cousins of course. You don't think Crowder played well? Preston Smith? Morgan Moses? Our nobody defensive backs? The team that just won the division?

What team are you watching? It's certainly not the Redskins.

lol there was nothing immediate about him 'steadying the ship.' Year 1 had a lot of us die hards wondering if the circus was just going to continue, and this was another act. Things started turning around the day McCloughan came in, don't mistake my support of Gruden for absence of criticism. A lot of the positives around here have as much to do with the talent he has, as it does him. His first true successful season was last year, and it shows in all aspects. To say year 1 was a clear cut turn around is false.

We went from hearing leaks every Sunday morning right before kickoff to no leaks immediately.

True or False?

The team bought right in. The W-L was barely improved, but improvements were being made quickly.

It takes time to clean up an accident scene. Jimmy Johnson's first season W-L was 1-15 or something like that. But change was happening and that team was getting on the right path.

Ok, but a day 1 turnaround is false. Like many others have said, his handling of Griffin is not righting the ship... it was not how a coach should handle the situation in my opinion, and the vast majority of the sports world agrees. Hard love is one thing, calling out ANY player in public is not ok.

I'm the first one to look at this franchise now and see a different team then when he walked in the door. I can also look at this team and see a different team then was here day 1 of year 2. Is there progress? Yes. Is he a part of it? Yes. Is he Jimmy Johnson? LOL, not gonna say that yet. Immediately righting the ship, is not what happened. It's happening, but I have to severely disagree with your timeline.

That is not how things went that first year. There were still leaks, albeit fewer of them. The internal leaks and exposed drama didn't die until McLovin came in.

It's been noted several times how last year was so aberrant for the Redskins in terms of stories, comments, and leaks versus previous years. Gruden was not as bad as Shanahan's regime, to be sure. But to say that it stopped immediately, that he immediately righted the ship? That's your trademark hyperbole striking again, I'm afraid.

Gruden was better than Shanahan, no doubt about it. But McLovin steadied the ship.

It wasn't like everything was perfect the second he walked in. I don't mean to imply that. There was a ton of ugliness everywhere that needed to be cleaned up.

But to make an analogy, our team was like an airplane flying straight down at 450 mph. QB drama, twitter drama, HC drama week after week. Our downward spiral was the ugliest thing in the entire league. Smoke and fire everywhere. It was embarrassing as hell. And the passengers (fans) were freaking out.

Then he arrived and took the controls. And the plane immediately started flying sideways. It wasn't always pretty that first year, but he pulled us out of a straight nosedive and at least got us stabilized.

Where you and I part on Gruden is that while you (and others, I know) criticize him for not benching Griffin right out of the box, in his first year as coach, I tend to credit him for actually trying to make it work with Robert, and then having the guts to do exactly what we're criticizing Shanahan for not doing, and drawing a line in the sand his second year and going with Kirk. This despite the knowledge of how that move would be viewed, and the firestorm it was going to create whether it worked out or not.
We certainly differ here. As I've said before, I think Gruden made his mind up that Griffin wasn't his guy, 10 minutes after he walked through the door. I actually give him credit for knowing, quickly, that Griffin didn't fit what he wants at the QB position. I'm an instinct guy myself. Where I lose some, not all, but some, respect is not doing what he believed to be best for him and his system/philosophy right away. That, and the disdain in his voice when he talked about Griffin. From his footwork, to being too stupid to count to three. And I believe since he knew in his gut that it wasn't going to work, his efforts with Griffin were just for show. How can you truly work with/help someone, when you ultimately don't believe in them. He gave a half-assed effort, at best. IMHO

My feeling is there are very few rookie head coaches anywhere, in any sport, who would have been willing to throw down on the kind of immediate "total control" option in the kind of atmosphere Gruden inherited with RG3 and Dan Snyder.
But Gruden is no babe. He's the son of a coach. Has a brother with a SB ring as a coach. Has many years of coaching experience. He was the head honcho, albeit with the junior varsity team. (which is as good as anything if you ask brother McD) He negotiated a guaranteed contract specifically for that total control. And then pussed out the first time he needed to use it. I can't give him a pass on that.

Ultimately I see Jay Gruden having played his cards on this one right; the most compelling argument for that being how well it worked out---Kirk played well, and more importantly, the team jumped from 5 to 9 wins and now heads into year three of his tenure with realistic expectations of contending for a playoff spot again.

None of this is new, I know--I've seen others advance the same idea. I guess I just fail to see the justification in continuing to take Gruden to task over something that has turned out as well or better than we, or even he, probably could have hoped
.

It's worked out well, so far. Few, barring brother El, who hates all black people named Robert (jk, of course) thought anything but the sky was the limit at the end of 2012. The story wasn't over then, and it ain't over now. Lots can happen between this chapter, and the end of the book.

I just want the last line to be, "And the Washington Redskins, have won another Super Bowl".

Preach it Brother McD!!!

You whacked out Grudenite! ;)

Yes brothers and sisters:) That plane looks a whole lot different now.

We lucked into getting McLovin on board. We've got the best flight crew and engineers (assistant coaches) we've had in a decade. We actually look like a professional team again. And this plane is gaining altitude quickly.

The passengers are all calm and in their seats again. Maybe with the exception of a few RG3 fans that are still shrieking. We can always drop them off in Cleveland if we need to lose weight.

Final destination? Houston, Texas.

First class.

Deep breaths people.... deep breaths... go outside and forget about football for a while and just enjoy nature. There's more then enough time before training camp to knock heads over stuff that has no bearing on the upcoming season.

When Gruden,Shanny and RG3 get thrown into a discussion, this place turns into the bar where J.B. Books walks into at the end of The Shootist...........

****ing Gruden.

Made me drive to DC for a GD home playoff game.

Somebody get a rope. And Robert who?

On a serious note, it is truly amazing that you guys can sustain this argument given that there can't possibly be anything further to say about it that hasn't been said before a hundred times. Don't get me wrong, I am glad everyone is here, talking about whatever they want. It just amazes me that you guys can stomach having this debate over and over.

I can hear both sides of it, having started where many are, in defense of Robert and abhorring what happened at the end of 2012 and blaming Shanahan for it, but then seeing another side to Griffin that I was not of a fan of, and ultimately deciding he was at worst a self-serving diva, at best of weak mental composition (my opinion).

What I have long ago concluded is that those who blame Griffin for his own failings are no more entrenched, immovable, or strident in their position than those who blame Shanahan and/or Gruden. And I feel most of us are smart enough to know, or should be, that the *truth* we all rail about, in most situations, is almost always somewhere in the middle and based on numerous factors and goings on of which we have absolutely no knowledge or perspective.

I'm glad Griffin's gone. No matter whose *fault* his implosion was, I will always believe that great QBs find a way to succeed regardless of their surroundings. Griffin is not a great QB. I don't wish him ill will, but I also don't pray for his resurrection. I've got a little Ax in me (ewww) - Griffin's not a Redskin anymore, and therefore I am ambivalent.

Agreed.

I long for the day when the conversation can pivot back to how the GM's decision not to draft a DT early will result in...

Oh, never mind.

I’m not going to get in the middle of this crap. If some of you want to be like the Slag Brothers and beat each other over the head, then go for it. I’ll continue to watch.

But one item of note.

I’ve been watching this thread over the last couple of days and no one has blamed one of the main players – Griffin. Unbelievable.

He goes behind the coach’s back early on and decides not to run a certain number of plays? What??? That puts him in “Big Baby” or “Diva” category for me.

With a new regime, he is still a diva. Guess who demands that the new coach make him a pocket passer? Well, it’s more than one request. Dear old dad is now involved. More drama. That show never ends well.

A new, no nonsense GM arrives. Still, the lead actor is given a chance with the fifth year option. By the end of the preseason, a new starter is named and the rest is (recent) history.

To be fair, he did not act like a diva on the bench this past season and put up zero complaints. However, Griffin (and dad) knew that the relationship was over and his return to DC was no longer an option.

Whenever a father (or parent) is overly involved in a pro athlete’s career, it is not a good thing. Take a look at Mary Pierce (tennis), Eric Lindros (hockey), Todd Marinovich (football), Tiger Woods (golf), Joey Logano (auto racing – story still being developed/told) and many others.

Need a differing perspective on the parental involvement with a twist? Watch the movie “The Great Santini” when you get a chance or watch it again.

Place some blame on the previous coach? Sure. The owner? You bet. The new coach? Yep, but not to a larger degree of the other two. The new GM? You can make the argument about handing out the fifth year option. The player and his father? Definitely.

I’m ready to move on as well. You see that horse over there? It’s dead.
