Random Commanders Thoughts

Little guaranteed money, out for the team if player is suspended.

Scot made sure Culliver's deal didn't damage the cap in case things went south.

Scot also said the door is not totally closed on Culliver either.

So if he can't get what he wants on the market, we may have him back on a cheaper deal.

Hell, Vinny would've given him an extension.

Feels great to have a good GM.

I think this is a huge change for us. We're used to just plugging holes of immediate need and never drafting for overall talent and long term viability. We never see our over all roster talent improve. I think that over the course of 3 drafts, you can draft best available, within reason, and fill a lot of your needs with a better roster. If you buy into McL's philosophy that you build the team by focusing on the best players you can get, true football players, you will ultimately have success that is sustainable. I want to see the talent level overall improve. I don't think it matters whether the back field or interior get fixed first. There will be FA help, there will be DL available next draft. We were killed at WR when Desean was out last year. We can't suffer that and really hope to compete. Barry got a lot more out of our Defensive backfield than I though possible, but it cost us in the running defense. TE's tore us up. We may have a guy that can stop that from happening. We may have filled some glaring needs that will have definite impact on quality of play. I'm excited to see the team jell in the coming seasons.

I think a lot of you are missing my point. The 4th round pick is my gripe. We traded it for a 5th this year and another 5th next year, then traded this year's 5th for a 4th next year. I don't believe for a minute there was not someone along the DL or OL that was worth taking this year with that 4th. What good does it do us to gain a pick next year if we have one now and have a need to fill, or even the BPA...you telling me at that point in the draft there is a drastic difference in the best OL, DL CB, LB, RB? I have to think the best RB and best DL are not far off in level of quality.

I am pleased with the 1st 2 picks, uncertain about another college player coming out of the draft with tremendous talent, but coming off a serious injury....so I am not sold on the Fuller pick. We had no 4th and I'm not happy about that. Ionnidis appears to be a diamond in the rough. The rest? Camp fodder, except the Georgia RB. I have a feeling if that kid can block, with that speed, he is going to be a nightmare on 3rd downs.

I was not sold on Billings, but the 4th round is where you take a solid rotational guy like him...or someone close in talent.

I have the same general opinion El. However, if there was no one they were really juiced about at that pick (that they didn't calculate would be there in the 5th) then I can understand the move. I don't necessarily like it, for all the reasons you gave, but I can understand it. I also think that they can be as prepared as humanly possible and see their planned pick and every backup alternative taken and then be left feeling the pressure of blowing that spot on someone they either don't 'love' or know they can probably get in the next round. If that happens, I can see where trading down is the best option.

I get all of that, too. I think people are painting me as though I believe this is a terrible draft. I'm not totally upset, I still think there had to have been someone, one big ugly that was worth a 4th, or even that 5th.

Now here's why I am not upset we did not take a big ugly like that in 6 or 7th rounds...they will be playing special teams. So I realize the value in RB's, LB's na DB's are the norm for the 6th, 7th and UDFA's. They are future special teamers, but 4th and 5th are when you find that big ugly, that we need.

And the Fuller pick, not sure about him either.

I still think we're a team on the rise and there is no one in football I would rather have building the team.

Pretty much my exact feelings.

After watching multiple videos on youtube, I'm starting to think that Cravens has a chance to finally be the answer at safety that we've been looking for since ST passed.

Clarification: I did not say he was Sean or the second coming or a HOFer. All I'm saying is he has a chance to solidify the safety spot. So don't get riled up.........

I'm intrigued that we drafted two guys who are very physical, aggressive players, and reportedly plan to use each at a position that was not their primary in college (safety and nose tackle).

He's been fired from two gigs. I'll also mention that he picked Smith over Rodgers. Though, sounds like Nolan had lots to do with personnel in SF (Ex-49ers coach reveals ridiculous logic for Smith over Rodgers pick - CBSSports.com)

I'm not negative about McCl...I just don't think he's infallible. Frankly, Gruden's scheme has a lot to do with our poor run game...more so than personnel, frankly.

But McCl has gone against a lot of what he said about building a team. Big time free agent signings wasn't his thing, remember. Maybe it still isn't, but it might be somebody in the organization influencing him? Maybe?

McCl is the least concern for me when it comes to the coaching and front office.

Nolan was in charge there he hired Scott. He was fired because he drank to much basically.
Who cares if you rush for 1100 yards and win the superbowl? Or rush for over 2000 yards and don't win it? This is becoming a passing league.

Scott never said he would not sign a big free agent. What he said was he would not build the team around them like the redskins have in the past.

MCl has said he will use FA as a tool at times. Norman was a winning lottery ticket. It would be like you walking down the street and finding a 10 million dollar winning ticket, and giving it to a stranger because it's not you style ...... This signing is the exception, not the rule, and has instantly made the D better from back to front for years to come.

A lot of people picked players over Rodgers. as a matter of fact, 23 other picks happened before him. Get over it.

Makes me think of Tom Brady having this supposed chip on his shoulder because every other team passed on him. Well, so did your own team... five times, as a matter of fact before they got to you.

Correction... six times.

Seems like every draft at least on player says that. Some ought to be just happy they are drafted. Myles Jack seems to be a humble guy when he didn't get drafted in the first round he said I know my injury will scare teams off but in just gonna go out and play hard for whoever drafts me whatever round I go in

Like others I wasn't crazy about trading our 4th round pick. On the other hand I have to believe our FO has a plan. We have to let them play their hand as they feel is best.
It's possible we use a pick we traded for in a trade.

With Norman it was something we had to do as Pete said. It's not every day you have an All-Pro CB in mid-twenties come available with no strings attached.

I'm not the expert in running a NFL team, so will leave the decisions to McCloughan and his staff.

He's been very forthcoming that there are many other factors he covets as far as the type of player available, how they fit the team, what their work ethic is, and not just the potential physical talent. That clarifies for me why he didn't just grab one of the available big uglies with that pick. He's not gonna take a guy he doesn't see as a fit. I'm convinced he believes he'll get far more from a player that is seemingly less talented but has all the other traits, than the other way around. The picks he got for next year might package in a trade up deal that makes the difference in getting a coveted DL pick on his board. He sees the future value proposition in that and understands long term success is built by considering the long term. We clamor for a DL that will help now, but clearly he didn't see that guy on the board at that spot. Not to mention other factors internally that we have no privy to that go into such decisions. We'll know in a few years how it plays out. Until he's demonstrated some lack in foresight, he gets a pass from me for his immediate decisions.

Mike,

Please...did McCl discount free agent signings as a way of building a team? I thnk he did early on. But, now, it's how he's addressing the D-Line and DBs...it's not through the draft. Sorry, man, but it just looks like more of the same for this team.

But, hey, I respect your opinion about McCl...and, I don't question your beliefs, or motives for your beliefs. If I told you I just hated the guy's approach and didn't give you any reasons, you'd have a case. Instead, I've told you he's pretty much done a 180 on how he's approaching the skill players on the defense.

And, overlooking the OL on the 4th pick also looks contrary to what he's been preaching.

Remember, opinions are like assholes...everybody has one.

:twitch:

Scott is not building through free agency. If you can't see that you need to pull your hatred blinders off. He signed only 1 sure starter this offseason the rest are gonna have to fight to start.
There is nothing wrong with offensive line. the same line you want to replace helped us win the NFC east with 5 draft picks on it 3 of those making there first starts ever. More important areas to upgrade. That will help the team wich is what he did

I am less inclined to give anyone a pass when I cannot believe for a second there was absolutely nobody available. I just don't buy it. He obviously does, which is why he is the GM and I am not, but I still cannot believe a 4th round pick this year could have been turned into something more valuable than a 4th round pick next year.

I see your point, I listened to him in his interview yesterday, so I get all that everyone is saying...I just cannot for the life of me believe there was nothing there.

Strategy wise it was a brilliant draft. picked up 3 futures and added mucho talent. Lots of upside. I also like the UDFA Alabama S and RT free agents. I don't see how we keep everbody.

McClou never gives you what you want to hear. He is spitting out draft rhetoric when he talks, that' s part of the brilliance. "Yeah I like big uglies, but I really let the draft come to me."

I've got to say, this is Patriots level drafting. That is, we stockpile draft picks from every draft, for the eventuality of trading up for the bonified can't miss stud. So my friends, the process has begun in earnest.
