Random Commanders Thoughts

I look at what the Giants did yesterday. Then thought back a few years and we would have been crucified for setting the $$$ bar so high. I see the Giants being in a bad cap situation in couple years. Plus, like Eagles last couple of years it may not work out.

Also, the QB salaries being given and think the madness has to stop. At some point all a team will be able to afford it a QB. Eventually they will price out the average from attending games.

I would not be surprised to see us make a deal for Chancellor in next few days. McLovin is building our team his and the right way.

After Olivier Vernon's deal, I'm thinking that 1 year, $1 million deal we gave Galette is now off the table.

1 year $5 million?

What does everyone think? What's a fair price?

Coming off a substantial injury, not having played a down in an actual game in over a year, I'd offer 1 mill with performance based escalators. If he can do better elsewhere..... so be it.

Realistically, the 2-year comparison should include last year with WASH, and the 1 year with NO, because the injury is very relevant to contract discussions.

While I don't think Gallete will get what Vernon did, the Vernon deal certainly raised the bar. I do think Gallete will expect more now, though how much I don't know.

Am I the only one who is excited and happy with the silence? In years past, I remember having the first day of FA practically circled on my calendar - hell, I remember the year we signed Archuletta and that crop of FAs I was pissed because I had a family committment that took me away from being able to hear about who we signed and all that.

This year? Until I read McD's post yesterday that said we were 45 minutes (or whatever) from the start of FA, I honestly wouldn't have known for sure.

McL nailed the draft last year. A few more years like that and we will be in good shape. Then we can get one or two targeted FAs who would fill a specific need nicely. Right now, we just need good football players - lots of them, and cheap ones. Hello, draft!

I have two thoughts on this:

1) Yes yes yes. I agree with you completely. I think back to a few years ago when Washington was the place where players went to get paid. That is not us anymore, and that is very refreshing. We know the guys we sign will sign here to PLAY and not just to get a paycheck.

2) I am a little worried that Snyder will see other teams grabbing up all the 'good' players and get fidgety. Especially if we take a step back this season and maybe go 8-8 or something. I just hope the man shows a little more patience than he has in the past. We'll see.

Talk about punch-drunk... and I agree with you.

The 'Skins can be a better team on every level than last year and realistically finish with the same record or 8-8... with Dan saying "See? I told you we should have spent more!!!"

Just hope that when/if that happens, McLovin can soothe his tortured brow rather than appease him.

Nick

Hopefully Snyder sees that what money spent is appropriately cost effective in the production of each player.
A better ingredients makes better pizza type thing. (can't believe I just did that)

The Giants definitely overpaid for Oliver. The NFL is a knee jerk and copy cat league. They see what the Broncos did with Von Miller coming off the Edge. Problem is I don't think Oliver is Von Miller by any means.

Problem is now Galette is seeing an increase in the market of edge rushers. Don't blame him, but now he expects to get paid. Chances are he may be asking for more than we are can spend.

Then we let him go. If I were Gallette, I'd be afraid of bad karma, but whatever. Our D was good enough to get to the playoffs last year with him contributing absolutely nothing. I fail to see how this is the end of the world if we don't sign him. He can look at the Oliver signing and point to that all he wants, but the fact is that he is coming off a major injury that often affects agility, strength and speed, 3 crucial factors for edge rushers. If a team is going to spend too much money, we walk away from the table.

Scot found Preston Smith last year, who looks like he could be something really special. He can find someone else if need be.

Scot has to get to work asap. I don't want to overpay and make mistakes, but the pendulum can swing too far in the other direction too.

Our defense is going to be a disaster if he thinks he can fill all of those holes through the draft alone. With our cuts over the last few days, as of right now we need:

4 new DL
A minimum of 1 new starting safety (Goldson) and at least one safety for depth. There's now concern that Kyshon Jarrett's injury may keep him off the field entirely.
Either Culliver renegotiates and comes back, or another starting CB. At least 1 other CB for depth.

That's the minimum.

We may also need an ILB, and another pass rusher if we get cheap with Galette.

There's no way all of that gets done through the draft alone.

Couldn't agree more. You can't let one guy keep you from building a complete team. At same time don't blame him for trying to get as much as possible.
As stated earlier, this is a copy cat league and everyone looking for that rusher off the edge to make a difference.

Problem with thinking along those lines is you must have 10 other good guys doing their job to support him.

I agree with most of your assessment, but disagree with your first sentence. Scot will start bringing in the talent when the deals drop to a level he is comfortable with. We are all sitting here laughing at some of these deals because they are insane, but you want him to jump into that fray?

He is (wisely, imo) waiting for the feeding frenzy to die down, and see what is left. He probably figured we weren't going to get any of the big target names, and has been waiting for the market to set itself so he could go after his guys. Those targets are probably down a talent/expectation level, but he thinks they can come in and be coached up or schemed up and produce.

London Fletcher was a GREAT FA signing of ours. Marcus Washington was really good. There have been others as well that worked out really nicely. But the first 48 hours of signings rarely result in big difference makers in the end. If we want to win, we can sit back, pick up a few guys off the trash heap and build through the draft.

Agree completely. Fortunately, the days of Vinny and Bruce are behind us. We won't be doling out stupid money on a guy coming off a major injury in the hopes he can regain his form, no matter how dominant the Super Bowl Champion's D looked.

Let some other team take the gamble.

From reading different articles, sounds like Reese is trying to save his job by spending big in FA. All these big FA's may cause chemistry issues. Would be poetic justice if Mara's Giants had locker room issues after spending big in FA.

McCloughan is doing this the way he's done in past to build a winner. It may take another year or so, but I believe he will get us there.

signing JPP was just an emotional sign. The dude can't wrap up with his club hand and that makes it harder for him to sack the QB. It was shown several times how they were able to slip away from him due to not being able to wrap up.

That deserves a high 3.5... :laugh2:

Right on Goal, we let him go. He was stop gap guy to begin with, not long term. He's not in long term plans so we move on and don't look back.

I heard some pundits saying we have a great shot at the Alabama DT. Will be there when we pick whereas the shut down corner won't be there or any stud DE/LB rusher. also, the way the draft will unfold, I believe there will be a great RB available later for us, no worries, Scot can figure out who the real playmakers are.

I'm all about the defense now. QB, OL, RB not an issue. A good defense will keep us at the top of our division. The Giants virturally HAD to go big in FA. They have a short shelf life with Eli, whereas the Redskins have the future ahead of them on the rebuild and we won't be doing it long term with free agents.

I share your feelings Goal, but it just becomes a simple numbers game at some point.

If we truly need 8 guys at an absolute minimum on defense, and then maybe a blocking TE, another OL player, maybe a WR and a RB......that's 12 guys with 7--maybe 10 draft picks.

I'm just saying we are absolutely going to have to sign some FAs here shortly.

Again, I agree with your sentiments, but this time it's your last word that throws me.

Why shortly?

Unless by shortly you mean, over the next few weeks, I fail to see what the rush is. Given the exodus of players since the season ended, it is pretty clear to me that Scot still sees this as a rebuilding effort - albeit one with a very pleasant surprise at the end of the first season. I think we held on to Robert as long as we could to try to finangle any draft pick we could. It won't surprise me if we're trying to get something for Andre Roberts right now, and we will drop him shortly if that doesn't materialize.

Over thnext few days and weeks, the glamorous FAs will be snatched up by teams who a) think they're one piece away from contending, or b) teams that feel like they need to make a splash in order to keep feeding hope to their fans - you know, like the Redskins did from 1997-2014? Once those big names are picked through, there will be plenty of lesser known contributors left.

But if you're wanting a stud signing like Haynesworth, Archuletta, et all, I think you'll be waiting for a while.

I agree. I think McLovin will keep finding guys like Knighton and Galette who can (in theory) fill spots while holes are address long term in the draft.

Agreed, we don't have to have all the answers right away.

While I don't think Gallete will get what Vernon did, the Vernon deal certainly raised the bar. I do think Gallete will expect more now, though how much I don't know.

The bar should be based on an average pay scale, not based on a single team.
Because a single team can overpay, based on poor judgment or desperation. (See Snyder's early years)
The Giants are probably over-paying due to a win-now philosophy, because they know Eli's days, or years, are numbered.
