Which coach, Callahan or Gruden?
 
I'm not a big fan of the thinking that the running game is all in Callahan's department, and thus all the blame lies with him. Gruden is the HC, and our run game was a disaster last year. Not bad. Not really bad. Titanic-level bad - disaster-level bad. Frankly, I don't give a shit who is calling the plays, designing the gameplan, whatever. I want better results than what we saw last year.

Ultimately, that's on the Head Coach. He and his apologists can blame Callahan, that's fine, IDGAF. But if Callahan is that bad, fire the guy. If he is the reason we can't get a running game going worth a shit, can his ass.

The running game was a disorganized, monkey-throwing-darts mess last year. There was no rhythm or semblence of a plan associated with it. Within the coaching staff, that may be on Callahan. But ultimately, Gruden has to look at Callahan at some point and say, "WTF dude? Either get it done or I will". And he did not do that.
 
It was the same mess the year before Callahan.

But I'm sure that was Allen's, or Snyder's, or Scott Brunell's fault. Anybody but St. Jay.

'His apologists'?? Goal, I see your appreciation for a division championship and home playoff game lasted all of about 15 minutes :) You wanted Gruden fired after season 1 (as did a lot of guys). You were wrong - that would've been a mistake. I agree the running game was a mess. But as you know, any aspect of the offense is the product of numerous factors. We are still rebuilding the OL. We had an inexperienced starter under center. We split time mostly with a rookie who looked lost at times, and a veteran whose skills appeared to have diminished greatly. And we were using a very unconventional playcalling system. We don't know what the conversations or dynamics behind the scene were. You don't fire one of the greatest OL coaches in the past 20 years. You don't necessarily fire ANYONE on the basis of a struggling run game for a season or two. I think it's fair to say that Gruden and the Redskins are struggling to match a running scheme with the talent on hand. But just as a rough first season doesn't equal needing to find a new head coach, we don't need to 'clean house' to improve the running game.

Not to pile on Goal, but I agree with you but for different reasons. A team doesn't win a division AND QB doesn't break franchise records without support from the run game. Or should I say, the threat of the run game. Despite Goal's overt bias, he is only looking at the small picture. The run game was never our bread and butter so I don't hold it to that standard. This was not a Riggins/hogs-type based offense. The big picture gives credit for all phases in the division title and especially Kirk's numbers. Without any run game at all, as Goal infers, Kirk would have been killed and never achieved anything. As for me, I think we can add the line to the run game in supporting Kirk's production, equally attributable.

Having said all that, yes we do need more production on the ground before defenses figure it out. Trust me, Gruden and Callahan know what they are doing. And have clued in Scott as to the type of players that make it work. I don't need spectacular, I need workmanlike production from all, we don't need no stinking stars in the backfield. We need lunch pail guys.

I have to vehemently disagree with this post.

Our run game was terrible. And it was absolutely supposed to be our bread and butter going into the season. And it was terrible. We were 14th in rushing attempts and 20th in pass attempts. That's a team that wants to run the ball. We were 30th in yards per attempt. That's a team that can't run the ball.

We got away with it because we played a soft schedule and Cousins played out of his mind the second half of the season. But we will not consistently get away with having a running game like that. It needs to be a LOT better.

And no, I do not trust that Gruden knows what he's doing. And Callahan may be an awesome OL coach, but as play-caller I'm not loving him. I hope they figure something out this offseason, because we won't get away with another half-assed effort like they put into the run game last year.
