Random Commanders Thoughts

Perry Riley out for 3-6 weeks with a broken foot. Needs surgery.

The hits keep on coming.

We need all the help we can get and having him out while he's been so solid is going to hurt our already miserable run defense.

Well damn.
What's the lineup change look like ?
Does Compton move to Riley's spot, and then Robinson takes his old position back ?
Or does Murphy take Riley's spot, since Murph was originally an ILB, and then Smith plays OLB full-time ?

per Gruden, check out the Quotes thread
On losing LB Perry Riley, Jr.:
“Yeah, he was playing well, very well. Last two weeks, he’s been outstanding for us and played with a lot of confidence. It’s a big loss. Hopefully, you know, obviously [Will] Compton and maybe we get Keenan [Robinson] back hopefully, obviously Mason Foster will have to step up and we might have to bring somebody else up from the practice squad. We’ll have to wait and see.”

Not sure I follow on "two more wins" thing, micks. We're still on the short end of the PPG stick. The good news is that while last year we "lost" on average 27.4 - 18.8, and this year we're "only" losing 24.3 - 21.9, showing a nice net gain, the bad is that we're still losing.

Two more wins would put at 7-4. I know averages are skewed badly by even one blowout in a sample size as small as 11 games, but I'm guessing there aren't many 7-4 teams still getting outscored by average PPG.

Be an interesting thing for someone to look up ... someone other than me that is. :)

OK lets see if I can be more clear. I get what you're saying. Here's what I'm trying to say:

From my experience, (not stat chart based, but could be if like you say someone else can create it) when looking at the standings, I like to focus on the pts for and pts allowed, as most of us do. Typically, and almost 100% of the time, the division leader has the lowest pts allowed, but not always the most pts for. So I focus on the pts allowed as my guide to the teams place in the season at year end. This year, the margin is so low that it shows we are competitive defensively, and why we are in the mix for the division, but not by much.

Analyzing pts for, my experience has told me empirically, that we avg 16-20 pts then we end up with X wins, usually 4-6. Once we get to 20-25 pts/gm, we most likely will have 6-8 wins. 25-30 you are in the 8-10 win category. Over 30 we are winning the division 11-13 wins. You can see this doesn't take into any account of the pts allowed, as you have in your net plus or minus analysis. I have in the past, never mixed or commingled the two. Typically, for statistical analysis, one wouldn't combine different stats into a hybrid and draw conclusions. But I did after your post, thinking it makes sense, thinking we were indeed 6 pts per game better this year. Later I had my doubts about that. That's why I said "somethings wrong with this picture" after my post.

The problem with this year is that it is a highly unusual one, where we have many teams with poor records (18 teams with 5 wins or less, and 7 more teams with 6 wins), somewhat of a statistical anomaly for the NFL. And I heard on the local radio that this has become a trend in the nfl and more teams with losing records each year are playing for something. (This would totally account for why I can't "pick em" worth a darn this year ha ha ;-) The net gain you speak of in my mind indicates we have improved as a team, but doesn't speak to winning the division imho, because we are still net negative, our margin of pts allowed (compared to our div opponents) is not a material advantage over our opponents, and our pts for, like you say, is still too low to warrant a div title (again this year is a statistical anomaly).

Here is another bit of interesting statistical data. Since the league went to 16 games, there have only been two teams to win the division with 7 wins (no one has won with 6). Last year the panthers and 2010 Seahawks. Three 8 win teams won their division during this time. That's 5 teams out of 244 total division winners in the last 36 years.

so the question remains, which statistical category is more of a leading indicator of winning the division, pts for or pts allowed. No question, pts allowed is our key to winning the division. No knock on Kirk or Gruden, just the stats and facts. However I still conclude that since we are now over 21 pts per game, we should have at least two more wins. But alas, this year is unlike any other.

interesting. like your thought process. really like your idea about predictors. below will be pedantic but not intended to be.

couple thoughts that might help:

- sample size depends on the variable (i.e., the concept & matching construct being used) being measured. it grows if one looks at the problem space as pts per half, points per quarter, home team/opponent tuples (i.e., consecutive possessions), etc.....can be more revealing depending on what it is one is trying to capture.

more than one way to skin a stat...as it were

- average/mean is clearly important....but I sometimes find median equally useful.

- averages are summary stats. variance matters. as do outliers. gives a better clue into the process being assessed.

- correlation like you are doing is pretty cool. you obviously have a background in this stuff so you know the ole saying about correlation not being the same as causal analysis. in my mind the defense and offense have both improved over the last two years...that's visibly obvious in the stats OM presents and from just watching the games. the assumption that this should translate to more victories, however, can't be made without accounting for how other teams we play have improved or regressed (i.e., what we see is also influenced by other teams...common sense I know). in this case, I wouldn't compare to NFL stats in toto but only the stats of the teams we play if the goals are to: 1) predict upcoming outcomes; and, 2) assess where outcomes didn't match predictions.

so...stats mumbo jumbo. what I conclude on the basis of stats in this thread is that the team has gotten better on both sides of the ball or the competition has gotten worse. common sense says it's a little of both. whether we should be winning more games? relying on one stat (the differential) may be a good indicator, but not enough in a sport that is as dynamic as football.

Most disappointing tie DJax and K. Robinson. MVP is Cousins

My expectations for Morris were low going into the season so not a disappointment to me.

‏@McD5fl @Rich_TandlerCSN Why low expectations? Questions about moving to a power blocking scheme?

Did you look at his rushing stats from year to year? Have gone down every year, dramatically.

Some serious recency bias here. My problem with him was injury was entirely predictable based on offseason.

He also believes Garcon is back. D Jax up in the air.

Hopefully this isn't a big deal:

DeSean Jackson is at practice but no helmet, watching individuals. #Redskins We will ask Gruden for details.

Practice? We talkin' 'bout practice? Not a game, not a game, practice?

Those of you attending please get the "WE WANT DALLAS" chant going before kickoff.

D Jax was out due to an illness. That could be the flu or a cold, or it could be a hangover.

He's listed as probably for Monday night.

Twitter observations from today...

People forget that Jay had to worry about kinda making the offense tailor to RG3, next offseason he can unleash everything with Kirk.

S Trenton Robinson was waived/injured yesterday. Had been battling a hamstring injury. Re-tweaked it Thursday.

Tarik El-Bashir ‏@TarikCSN
If Trenton Robinson clears waivers, he'll revert to injured reserve, Coach Jay Gruden said.

Brian McNally ‏@bmcnally14
Redskins have an open roster spot now. Robinson retweaked his hamstring injury this week.

Tarik El-Bashir ‏@TarikCSN
Jay Gruden said ILB Mason Foster will start in place of Keenan Robinson (shoulder/questionable) on Monday.

TEXT from Bruce Allen: "Monday night, you, me and @chaddukes will be in charge of not allowing any fan with a COWBOYS jersey into FedEx."

Is it an option, when attempting to re-sign DJax, that they can put a clause in his contract, that he is required to attend all offseason activities, and if he misses any (not due to injury, illness, or family emergency), then he would either be fined by the team, or docked pay, or lose bonus ?

Doesn't that kind of defeat the purpose of making the offseason activities optional? The players union makes sure these things are no mandatory, so I doubt they would allow that.

Having said that, yeah we all want him there so he can get in shape and be ready for the season. I just don't think the team can make him attend.

Trent vs Hardy is gonna be a good matchup. My guess is he ends up on Moses's side.

Hope TW instigates some shit causing Hardy to be ejected when he retaliates.
