You never know.....personally I believe that we'll win many more games this year and have no chance at either, but if I'm wrong and we stumble, we may have an outside chance at Ramsey.

Here is what makes him truly special. We all know CBs that shift to safety late in their careers. But how many safeties can easily move over on second down and cover the other team's fastest and best WR and shut them right down? He can thump in the middle, cause sacks and stop RBs cold. He can then line right up at CB and run step for step with the burners. He's really something else.

Even in loss, FSU's Jalen Ramsey proves an easy 'money' NFL projection

Jameis Winston
Devonta Freeman
Dante Fowler

This year's talent and teams are both weaker than usual. But there are still a few players that should light up the NFL.

On FSU: Jalen Ramsey. We may never see another Sean Taylor in our lifetimes. But if Sean was your guy, then you'll want to watch Ramsey tonight. He has the size, speed, heart and hitting ability that makes jaws drop. He is also expected to shock on measurables at the upcoming combine. A track star in college, he's currently projected to go anywhere from picks 6-9 in the first round of next year's draft. He's the most highly touted safety to be drafted, well, since Sean Taylor.

Dalvin Cook: He's only a true sophomore
so he's ineligible for this year's draft. But watch and admire. He may be a great one in the NFL.

On Florida: Vernon Hargreaves. He's expected to go between picks 3 and 5 in the first round. I believe he gave up only one TD all of last season--to Amari Cooper.

Jonathan Bullard: DE. He's a beast both against the run and the pass, and he's expected to go in the middle of the second round.

Umm...Devonta Freeman played his last game at FSU 2 years ago.


But I agree, we have little to no chance to pick up Hargreaves, would really love to see what Jalen Ramsey could bring to our secondary.

I gotta be honest, I do not think Jalen Ramsey is as talented as Sean Taylor...and I really, really want Jalen Ramsey in a Redskins' uniform.

Being an equivalent of Sean Taylor is a very high bar to clear.

I think we should be happy with a safety who is even 70% of the athlete he was. That would make him top 90th percentile of starting NFL safeties and would be an amazing addition to our D.

You're correct on Freeman. I was writing that pretty quickly and scanning Gator players.

Yeah, I'd love to see Ramsey in burgundy and gold.

He just covers so much ground--just like Sean did. It's a strange comparison, but he reminds me of a bball player that fills the stat sheet. Points, rebounds, assists, blocks and steals.

For those who haven't seen him yet, they're likely to see him rushing the QB, stopping runs up the middle, stopping pass attempts to the TE, breaking up screens and then playing blanket coverage on the WRs. It's truly insane. He's all over the field.

I'm a fan, but he has a few years to go.

Ramsey is a little more experienced (obviously) and more polished at this point. It really is unusual to have a guy that can play safety and CB, both at very high levels.

Ramsey this year and James in the future could be nasty.

No one is as talented as a Sean Taylor or a Ronnie Lott.

And it's incredibly early for Ramsey. But man is he on the right path.

Last note on Jalen Ramsey, at least before the game lol.

Check out some of his highlights below. Especially beginning at the :40 mark.

And if the strip at the 1 minute mark doesn't remind people of Sean Taylor, I don't know what will.

And Good God, he brings the hit stick.

 
I'm not making a case for an elite WR or RB but if you guys think those players aren't critical, I beg to differ. Great play at those positions still matters - but that doesn't mean you have to invest a top pick at those positions. I suspect if you looked at the best teams, you'd find that the ones that invest most in the lines on both sides of the ball are the ones who are competitive year after year.

Yeah. If Scot alternates first round DLine with OLine for the rest of time I'd be thrilled. BirdLives' GREAT post illustrates that you can survive with a great D if your QB is average. I would love to see the protection those OLines provided the QB the year they won the SB. I'm betting that most of them had very solid to very good Olines.

It has always dumbfounded me that a team that's greatest success revolved around one of the greatest Olines in NFL history, would fail to heed that lesson for a good 20 years.

It's the reason why I never bought into the "I grew up a Redskins fan" line that Snyder likes to throw out there,because if he was, he'd have understood that and at least gave his front office that vision/direction.

Hopefully Scotty continues to right that wrong moving forward and add to Williams,Scherff and Moses.

Trent will need someone to groom in the next few years, which gives us plenty of time to build the rest of both lines.

If there is a way to grab OL stats from NFL.com (maybe sacks allowed?) to be able to metric "elite" OL, I'll try and do that when I do the RB analysis for Boone.
 
DieselPower44 - I agree re: building the OL, but we unfortunately have a lot of weak areas to fill on this team. I think D needs to take precedence with a little OL sprinkled in and around the draft for good measure (interior OL, particularly C).

Well yeah, BOTH lines need to be addressed.

When Scotty was first hired and said "It's a big man's game" and "the game's won upfront", my first thought was "Yada yada yada...heard this before,let's see you practice what you preach."

Then May came and he drafted Scherff and Smith with his first two picks and actually backed up what he said.

Gives me hope for the future.

Ok, I took a look at Football Outsiders since they actually do rate OLs. Their rating system is explained here.

The site ranks OLs on both run and pass blocking. It only goes back to 1996, but here's what I found. Superbowl winners with OLs ranked in the top ten:

2004: Run and Pass

Not sure exactly how that lines up with the previous chart, but I do think it's interesting that most teams had to be able to run block. Not so much pass block. Not sure exactly what that means. Maybe it means if you have a top notch QB you don't need to give him a perfect pocket all the time? Or if you have a solid defense you can run the ball and play ball control?

Dunno. But there it is. Have to be able to run it.

... We have our work cut out for us.
 
Guess that's why they brought in Callahan.
Hard to get it going good with two backups and (essentially) two rooks manning the line.

I agree, but they're pretty damned good in pass pro...why so good in pass pro and not run game?
