Random Commanders Thoughts

Thanks for the stats - that's actually better than I remembered. Cooley benefitted a lot from the Redskins never having a great #2 behind Santana during his prime years. He was often the best 2nd option and a lot of times even the best receiving option. Still surprised he would have another go of it. His skills looked pretty diminished that last year with the Skins.

Yeah, I am not sure what Shanahan was doing with him, though. I think the idea the of Niles Paul becoming Shannon Sharpe was too attractive to Shamahan. It just appeared like he was never used. I don't know. I can say I don't expect him to catch 20 receptions if he does make the team in AZ.

Cooley was a baller when he played, until injuries caught up with him. When he left, he was done. Everyone loved him, but he was done. What surprises me about this is why would a team carry a 3rd tight end who is old. If a team is going to carry 3 tight ends, the 3rd one would most likely play special teams. They want some 24 year old who is willing to run down and get his head smashed in on kickoff coverage or on the kick return team. Cooley won't nor should he play special teams. He wasn't much of a blocker. He was a pass catching TE who is now old and has several injuries, which would diminish his ability to get open.

Best of luck to him though. If he can make it, I hope he plays well and stays healthy. The last part is the most important. I'm just glad that it doesn't look like it's the Redskins trying to carry an older player for 3rd string.

I expect he'll be back to radio rather quickly.

Exactly what I'm thinking. It was painful watching him in his last days. He had all the speed and grave of a snapping turtle. That doesn't get better with time, even with rest.

It's also that, sure he feels good right now. He's back in shape. Still has that Superman mentality (for Brother El ;) ) chicks dig pro athletes, since I'm not available.

Problem is, he ain't been hit in quite a while. Couple of shot to the knees, chest, and head, and he'll start pining for the safety of a radio studio.
Where he gets to take all the shots. Verbal shots, that is.

I always liked Cooley. I never looooooooooved Cooley the way some fans seemed to. I guess he had a magnetic personality off the field or something, but on the field he was a solid player for about five years. And that was great, but I never thought of him as anything more than that.

How old is he now? 33?

He may survive to do some spot duty. If that works for him it works for me. Good luck, Cooley.

And that's all I have to say about that.

Portis just got some great news. He'll be the new sideline reporter this season.

Edit: It may just be for the preseason games.

Portis is only doing preseason games. Kenny Albert and Theismann will broadcast 3 games with Chick Hernandez filling in for Albert on one game.

Ahhh... so like Rundellel did a couple years ago.

Maybe it's like an audition (just like the rookie players in pre-season)
Maybe if they like him, he gets a regular season job.
And I don't see why they would not like him. He's already the best in the business, IMO......the perfect man for the job.

I had previously vowed not to watch any preseason this year, at all, because I'm tired of being falsely caught up in hype - or falsely getting caught up in the doom and gloom, depending on how that particular preseason goes.
But I just changed my mind. I will be tuning into preseason, just for Portis alone.

I don't live in the DC area. Has he already had some local reporting jobs, or similar ?

As long as Portis doesn't ask to interview for a front office position I am fine with it :thewave:

Fangio and the Bears?

I wonder what kind of a defense they are going to field in 2015 picking up Jarvis Jenkins who contributes 0.5 sacks a season and 33 year old broken down Antrel Rolle, late of the Giants. Anyone that watched the Giants over the past couple of years can see how Rolle got old pretty quickly.

Emit Smith.... need I say more ?

While I think Portis is more eloquent then Emit, ya just don't know till he does some actual serious reporting.
