All that stuff was illegal but nobody cared. Not the league, not the fans, nor the media.

Why the scrutiny all of a sudden?

Because folks are tired of seeing a dynasty.

Same with Red Auerbach and the Celtics. They won so much that there just had to be something fishy. Even to the point of accusing them of turning up the heat or the hot water off or messing with the rims.

This is no different.

Tired of the Pats winning? Don't complain. Get better and beat em.

The Patriots are classless and we all know it. The "all of a sudden" scrutiny has been with them since they cheated against the iggles over a decade ago. The victim role of "were better so everyone else are haters" is something I expect from cowbum fans.

People would beat them...if they didn't cheat. But there is nothing "fair" or "simple" with how the pats bend and twist every rule they get. And when their owner/coach/players are all pompous jerks it's easy to root against them.

There were multiple teams caught this past year, putting sticky substances on gloves, and other equipment violations - the only NFL response was the $25,000 fine deemed appropriate by league rules. Goodell likes to make up his own rules, whenever he wants too, and he's so afraid of doing ANYTHING that doesn't satisfy the mob at this point, it was obvious that they were going to come down ridiculously hard on Brady and the Patriots.

I don't hate the Patriots, I respect what they've done. But other than saying 'Goodell does what Goodell wants to do' (or his lackeys do), it's hard to justify this kind of penalty. If you're going to lay the smackdown for cheating, you need to be consistent, and this is totally inconsistent with other instances of tampering with equipment or breaking minor league rules, and the penalties that have been imposed. I know the next argument will be that the penalty isn't about the rules violation, it's about lying about the rules violation. Only problem is, in almost every other instance of minor 'cheating' in the past several years, teams have initially denied it and played dumb. It's kind of par for the course in sports.

I think this is mostly much ado about nothing, as evidenced by the fact that Brady played like crap with the supposed 'advantage' of deflated balls, and lit it up once they were corrected to the supposedly disadvantageous proper weight. The whole thing is stupid to begin with - as the NFL could prevent every bit of possible 'tampering' simply by not allowing teams to 'prep' the balls at all, or doing whatever general prep is desirable (breaking balls in) consistently behind the scenes.

So, the Pats are big time cheaters with some great "advantage" over every other team. That's why they never lose.
The NY Giants had no trouble beating them...with freaking Eli at Qb to boot too.
How is that possible?

There were a lot of things acceptable in the 70's that aren't now. Bell bottoms, free love, football players playing with concussions. Things change.

Yes Boone, I'm jealous of the Pat' s success. But not of how they got there. I'm shocked they were penalized that much. But I ain't crying over it.

You break the rules, you get punished. I respect your view point, as you freely admit you don't care if it's a fair, reasonable response. I think where some of the glee is misguided is that Goodell being able to make up whatever punishment he wants is a major problem. That's what he's doing here - there's ZERO basis for this kind of heavy-handed punishment, other than that the owners have given Goodell the authority to do whatever he wants. You guys didn't like it too much when he revoked our cap space the day before free agency a couple of years ago. I'm not comparing the two situations in any way, other than that the penalty was grossly disproportionate to what the perceived crime then was, just as it is today with this 'crime'. Ridiculous. You like this? You're sanctioning Goodell being his typical heavy handed tyrannical self. That this time he's aiming his cannon at a hated franchise doesn't really alter that fact.

I don't agree for one simple reason...Repeat offender. Those other teams that got in trouble and got less weren't on the docket with previous offenses. Belichick and Brady were both directly involved in Spygate and one other thing that escapes me at the moment. This penalty was a direct result of that from my perspective.

I think it's a bit of a joke really. One first rounder a 4th and a million bucks? They'll save more than that on Brady's unpaid salary for 4 games. And 4 games isn't enough to really hurt that team. I do agree with your points about Goodell's hodge podge method of management though. I think it's almost comical the way we got nailed with multiple lost picks and a massive cap penalty for breaking a rule that's not even written and they repeatedly break rules that go straight to the integrity of the game and get slaps on the wirst by comparison. They wanna actually punish them and get their point across then give em a cap penalty. You can argue the level of impact their cheating had but it's absolutely undeniable that they have a culture of rule stretching/breaking that goes against the spirit of fair play and honorable competition. Maybe I'm a bit naive or helplessly old fashioned in this regard but that to me is as bad as it gets. I am so glad I am not a parent with pats fans as kids. Trying to explain away the constant attempts to manipulate rules and going well beyond them to win would be awful tough to explain with a straight face.

Another very interesting and mildly outrageous aspect to this is Tom Brady spearheaded the rules change that allowed individual teams to police their balls the way it's done now. So he spearheads a rule change that he winds up using to manipulate equipment and cheat. Then when called out on it publicly his reaction is to chuckle and shrug his shoulders unapologetically. Incredible.

Ok, if we are going to say what it "sound like" it sounds like an apologetic woman after her man beat her and is being prosecuted for it.

They've cheated in a super bowl and championship game now..they have a huge asterisk by their titles in the eyes of every fan that isn't riding their jock.

Boone, I think I've crushed Gooddell in the past. This is more reactionary foolishness. He is a monster and fully reliable to make stupid, reactionary decisions that undermine whatever imaginary credibility he and the league have left at this point.

With that said, the penalty sounds pretty fair to me. I was thinking a 3 game suspension for Brady.

I'd expect an appeal, and something like 3 games and maybe that first rounder sounds about right.

because it's private/ personal and you usually have to have a warrant to go through someone's private documents legally?

I'll just stop here before Boone and staff beat me for getting off in the weeds but if one is dumb enough to give up their privacy so freely....

Best analogy I've heard is to speeding. I get so sick of this "everyone is doing it" excuse, that's a cop out. So what? If they're all breaking the rule then fine em all! If you're caught speeding you don't look at the cop and say "yea I was doing twenty over but so were 5 other cars, so I should go free". It's the same deal, they broke rules, they got caught and are paying a price because they've already got points on their license and are on probation. Don't whine because others do it or get away with it, don't break the rule if you don't want to pay the price when you get caught. It actually is really simple.

These players give up their privacy the minute they sign up for the NFL and in most cases at least 2-4 years before that. They allow the NFL to police what they do in their private lives, to police what they put in their body and even punish players when they are acquitted of charges in a court of law. You give up your cell phone if your cell phone will exonerate you in a huge scandal that speaks to your own personal integrity as well as your professional reputation. You give up the cell because when you signed the NFL contract you agreed to the level of scrutiny that NFL securities bring to your life, in exchange you get payed like a rock star. Rights to privacy are meaningless in the context of an NFL employee. You give up the cell phone because of all of these and many other reasons but you don't for only one...it will implicate you further.
