Curious to hear about how those who used the excuse that Wade Philips wasn't being persued by any other teams feel about Philips being hired by the Denver Broncos?

Missed this, but just said the same thing in the DC thread.

Wasn't an excuse. At the time. it was fact. Now, he's been hired last out of what, 5-6 new DC's. By a team that just fired a head coach that took them to the playoffs 4 years in a row. Crawling back to a team that fired him before. A team that hired his assistants before hiring him. Didn't some roast our nuts THINKING some of the old staff was forced on Gruden? Maybe nobody else wanted the Denver gig.

Ok it was fact, now I have a laundry list of excuses too. ;)

JK...JK... dont think I was around the fire roasting anything, in fact I dont think that was a huge leap at all.

I would have been fine with Wade....but I like that we went younger, hope I dont have to heap a lot of ketchup on that crow to get it down at a later date.

We don't know who was pursuing Phillips then. Just because it doesn't show up on Twitter doesn't mean it's not going on. I'm guessing some teams assumed we would hire Phlllips since that should have been a no-brainer.

Hey, count me as one who was hoping for a Phillips hire. But the fact was, he was not high on anybody's list. Including Denver. If he was, you'd think he would have been one of the 1st DC hires in the league. Instead of one of the last.

He has more to work with in Denver than he would have had here. I'm sure we'll have weekly comparisons once the season starts. The odds are heavily against Barry, in the short run. Unless Peyton retires. That would narrow the gap some. All we can hope is that Barry gets the job done.

And I know we all want that.

watched a Barry interview the other day. frankly...I wasn't impressed....but.....will reserve judgment for what we see on the field. to be honest....he sounded a lot like hazlett to me in the way he discussed 3-4. kept talking about how he had to reinvent himself after leaving Detroit - suggested that adversity (i.e., losing) is what really stimulates growth and ultimately progress. well good then...I am more confident than ever that our jejune head coach will improve in leaps and bounds after last season. san diego was Barry's first exposure to the intricacies of 3-4 defense. guess we'll figure out pretty quickly whether he has what a litany of his predecessors lacked: a facility for smart in-game adjustments - the stuff Gibbs and Pettibone were legendary for.....

Critiquing the hire after the initial post-hire period is just wasted energy. Not a big believer in blamestorming - I'll just be rooting for Barry to be a great hire even if I'm not convinced he was currently.

call em as I see em! when they trot these guys out the team is obviously trying to create a certain image...convey a particular message. all a humble fan can do is listen, process, place in context and reflect.

btw...anyone catch the South Park takeoff on the Redskins' name last night? I only caught the tail end.

Ah, the ol' learning curve and trying to get that head above water.

It’s not unusual for a first-year NFL head coach to underestimate the workload that is added when making the step from coordinator to the top job. And while they routinely get warned about how big the leap is it’s not uncommon for rookie coaches to take on more than they can handle. Gruden did that here and in bringing in a quarterbacks coach he clearly learned a lesson.

But I think that in the bigger picture, looking at both sides of the ball, Gruden learned another lesson. Given his relatively light NFL resume, he needed some experienced help, some gravitas on his staff. He brought in Cavanaugh, who has 17 years of NFL coaching experience including winning a Super Bowl ring as the offensive coordinator of the 2000 Ravens. To coach the defensive backs he brought in Perry Fewell, who was the defensive coordinator of the 2011 Super Bowl champion Giants. Offensive line coach Bill Callahan has experience as a head coach with the Raiders and at Nebraska.

You could argue that all three of the position coaches are overqualified for their current jobs. It appears that Gruden knew that he needed help and brought in some heavyweights. The head scratching exception here is at defensive coordinator, where he decided on Joe Barry, with just two unsuccessful years as an NFL defensive coordinator on his resume, instead of Wade Phillips, who virtually defines gravitas as a defensive coordinator

Gonna put this gem that someone was so gracious to post on YouTube right here.....

To borrow a line from Capt. Augustus McRae: Here's to the sunny slopes of long ago.

Well, if Barry got the job on the strength of his interview and communication skills he ought to be pretty good in front of the media and fans as well 😉

I'm sure this will be picked apart.

As it probably should since it displays his willingness to mask the seriousness of his injury to get back on the field, no matter the consequence of his deception. His sole concern was getting back on the field.

Or the fact he wanted to compete and try to get his job back and was willing to sacrifice his own body to do so. Used to be we liked players who played thru pain.

I agree - it should get picked apart because Griffin is never, ever, going to learn to keep his ****ing mouth shut. This quote alone really irritates the hell out of me.

" I wanted to get out there and play with my guys and help them win games. And that didn’t happen when I got back out there, and coach [Jay Gruden] made a decision. That’s an unfortunate decision..."

No - what was unfortunate Griffin is that you minimized the extent of your injury and made getting yourself back out there under center the priority. Sorry - but I don't buy the 'my team needed me to win' stuff. I want to like Griffin, and I want him to succeed, but he's becoming a hard guy to root for. He should know that nothing good is going to come from comments like that. I'm starting to believe he's not nearly as 'bright' as we've all been lead to believe. I also think the comments about 'my plan' are not going to loved by his coaches. The only plan you need to have Robert is the one your coaches ask you to execute.

None of which has anything to do with him running his mouth and making statements that can be misinterpreted (assuming he doesn't mean exactly what he says), creating distractions this team doesn't need.

Running his mouth....no wonder Marshawn hates the media so much.

It's the offseason. What is there to be distracted from? Coaches being hired? Draft boards which we never see?

He shut off social media last year after all the criticism. He is now off and should be allowed to talk as he wants.

I get that...I understand your point. However, if he "thinks he should have sat out the rest of the season", then by coming back..."manning up"... he is being purely selfish.

If a "super star" QB, whose greatest asset on the field is his mobility, conceals an injury that affects his play then he is looking out for nothing but himself. That is a fault.

If he could have done it and not looked terrible, like he did upon return from the injury, we wouldn't be having this discussion. But...here we are again. Should we blame Gruden for not benching him after his performance against Tampa Bay because his injury was obvious, reflected in his poor play? Do you remember how bad he played in that game? It was putrid! Is the ankle another excuse for poor play?

I'm done. This is obviously out of my control and I cant/won't defend him against two different people.

I hear your side, Brian. I also see your cynism. It is what it is
