Random Commanders Thoughts

So, we're cool with gruden benching our qb and dragging it out publicly just to have it end up in the same result from top to bottom?

Gruden is a major issue as well. He's down to bench and call out Griffin (who's right about his teammates) but when gruden himself makes the wrong call it's "so be it"? I think that's wrong..he should be held to the same accountability he is trying to make Griffin stand up to.

Colt sucked first half. They had 19 yards offense for the most part and indy had 21 points. A lot of us thought Griffin was going to start second half until the touchdown happened.

Colt hesitated and held the ball too long. Colt checked down a lot. Colt fumbled a lot. Colt was sacked a lot.

The way he caused all that drama in the locker room to produce such mediocrity tells me gruden is an inmate and not a warden. He's losing respect fast and the players feel no need to try hard Ala the lucky td to paulsen

I agree that Gruden has handled the whole QB issue clumsily, and that's putting it mildly. The last thing this team needed this year, losing season or not, was a lot more drama. And he's managed to accomplish that. I hope he has a plan in his head for turning it all around. He doesn't seem to have one, but I hope there's one in there somewhere.

from day 1 i havent liked the way Griffin's situation was handled. I'm with you.. I dont like it. I've tried to find a way to spin it and the only way that will happen is if Griffin comes out better then before wearing our teams colors. I mentioned he deserves to be held accountable for players giving up on plays and playing uninspired football. That's a coaches responsibility. All that aside, even with the bad playcalls, they didnt give up 2 70+ yard TDs when we were within a single score (and had Fleener drop an easy TD).... Against SF our defense played well enough to win. Against the Colts they didnt. Finding this common ground where both aspects of the team play well enough, as well as the personnel on the field to win comes down to Gruden and his ability to be a head coach.

My honest thought is it comes down to gruden and his inexperience/lack of leadership. He's not his brother and doesn't command respect like Jon does.

....yet.

Not everyone can walk into a locker room and command another coaches players to respect him from day 1. That's why I said that I felt the Griffin move had to me made. It sent a message that it's Grudens team and he is going to make the decisions. I am happy we have someone in there who is making decisions and not including the owner, the media, the fans in the decision. Whether the decision is right or wrong... it's his decision. Something we have lacked for along time, and it will mean something to the players to see that he's taking this stance. Or i'm wrong and he'll be chased out of here after year 2....

Well..all that drama, all that calling out and we have the exact same issues as we did before. We have players not trying, crappy play calling, and losses still coming in.

Nothing has changed and with the lack of effort today defensively as well as by a lot of offensive players I don't see much changing.

It is odd that the coach makes a horrible decision, can't adjust to what is on the field, and blames players gets no flack. But Griffin did the same thing and he needed to be benched.

I like pancakes.

But when you consistently get bad pancakes from an organization, who do you blame ?
You have to blame someone.
So who do you single out ?
Or do you just blame everyone ?
Do you assume the problem lies in upper management, and hope the organization gets new management and that takes care of the problem, or do you just switch to a different restaurant ?
Or do you stick it out, and figure the current management is fine, and they just need to bring in a new staff that knows how to at least fundamentally cook good, basic pancakes, before going in over their head by trying to re-invent the pancake, by creating some crazy new Salsa Ranchero Pancake, that everybody knows ain't gonna fly in this competitive business ?
Obviously the Chef is lacking in his execution of the basic pancakes, because any good chef knows you don't add too much water, and have them come out all flat, and tasteless. But is his lack of execution an indication of no long-term potential ? Or can he be coached up, to execute the recipe better ?
Do these guys even practice making pancakes when they're not working in the restaurant ???
One thing is for sure. The kitchen lacks leadership.
Maybe the leadership they need is for someone from the reality show "Restaurant Impossible", to come in and salvage the dissolving establishment.

Wow..I actually understand and agree with that. Am I dying? Lol

Nice post.

Mike, you need to get some fresh air. I'm as big a Griffin supporter as they come, but parts of your post just come off like sour grapes. Colt had his problems as you pointed out, but overall he played a good game once he settled down. How it will all play out in the end nobody knows, but I can't take anything away from what Colt did today. Even with all his sacks, errant throws, and other issues, had the D been able to get a stop more often, he had us in that game. The line flat out sucks no matter who is behind center, and it really shouldn't make any difference who the QB is to have a productive running game. The line is still the biggest issue for this offense. Colt looked shell shocked in the first half when they would show a close up of him, but like they say, you have to have a short memory as a QB, and he got his shit together, and executed.

By no means am I suggesting that Gruden was the wrong choice for this franchise, but here is something interesting to think about...

Mike Zimmer, currently with the 5-7 Vikings was interviewed on a number of occasions for head coaching gigs before finally capitalizing with Minnesota. As an outsider who doesn't follow the Vikings closely, it seems as he's doing a fairly decent job considering the circumstances he's faced this year in losing a top 5 player in the league for the majority of the year. He's been able to keep the team together despite the major distraction that the Peterson situation created in Minny, and maintain a fairly respectable record. You can argue that the struggles he's endured in landing his first head coaching gig have prepared him fairly well for what he's currently dealing with.

Gruden on the other hand has stepped into the head coaching ranks much more quickly than Zimmer...he hasn't really experienced much "failure" in the interview processes.

In some regards, Griffin's and Gruden's situations parallel one another. You have two guys who achieved success fairly quickly in their careers.

Failure is something that is relatively new to both these guys. It seems logical that moving into 2015, they should rely on each other to help get out of the messes they've created for themselves.

If it doesn't work, it would be wise to move on from both of them from an organizational standpoint.

Alright...hunger strike until the skins win! Who's with me?!?!

Some fresh air? Hahaha

I made points that I backed up. If you don't like it, cool. Maybe you need more fiber in your diet. Thats NOT For Me To decide. I just speak my side.

But my lack of fresh air has nothing to do with colt getting sacked 7 times any more than your falling asleep during matlock does.

Ah, we now take solace in padded stats by the qb when the game is out of reach.

I've never seen so many blown coverages by a defense...except in college games. I mean, most of the Colts' biggest plays didn't have a defender within 15 yards.

And, we still can't be consistent in the red zone.

But, hey, we sure can rack up yards when the game is out of reach.

Not taking solace in anything. By my own standards, only a win today would validate Colt, and we lost. That being said, weather the game was out of reach or not, the D and the O line let us down today, not the QB. No, he wasn't a world beater, but he didn't loose the game. I'm trying to apply the same standard of critique no matter who's behind center...

One thing is for sure. The kitchen lacks leadership.
Maybe the leadership they need is for someone from the reality show "Restaurant Impossible", to come in and salvage the dissolving establishment.

Here's the problem. At one point in your life, you had the greatest pancakes in your life at that restaurant & no where else can you go to get those pancakes. You may have even tried, but they just don't taste the same. So you went back again & again, getting the same great pancakes week in & week out.

Then one day, the chef up & quits & you hope, in your pancake panicky frenzied self that he left the recipe for the perfect pancakes for the next guy AND that the next guy doesn't throw it away thinking to himself, "I know how to make pancakes! Who does this guy think he is?"

Now, here we are down the road a bit. New management every other year, new booths & table cloths & sometimes, you like the changes in the staff. The service gets better, then it doesn't. For whatever reason, during one of the management changes, they mixed their fountain soda really well, getting the mix between syrup & CO2 perfect, & you think, "the perfect pancakes are bound to come now!" But they don't. But your loyalty to this place is SO STRONG that you come back repeatedly knowing they were just around the corner & you are so afraid that if you leave & don't come back, the perfect pancakes will return & you will have missed them. So you-we come back. Always hoping with our taste buds just starving for the best pancakes we've ever tasted. And we wait. Eating strange pancakes that don't satisfy our perfect pancake cravings.

I guess the only question is, at what point do we come to the realization that there are other things to eat?

Wow, you just summed up my last 23 or so years. You are a true culinary expert.
That's so true about the previous guy in charge, who was the expert, and actually passed on his secret, successful recipe onto the restaurant's new management, but the new guys still found a way to amazingly **** things up on a continued basis !!

And ya know, I've thought about the option of looking at other things to eat besides pancakes, but the true justice would be that we demand a refund or a discount for the defective, sloppy pancakes we've continued to receive (plus a promise from ownership to correct the problem) especially since we have been the most loyal of customers, and invested the most in the business !

I mean, what kind of restaurant business, or any kind of business for that matter, doesn't take care of it's most loyal customers. It's like a Pancake Factory of Badness.

So I just got back a little while ago from visiting family in MD. I had a 6 hour drive to think about the game. It reminded me of the early games last year like Philly and Green Bay. The offense did nothing in the first half when it need to take advantage of the mistakes by the Colts. Last year, the offense need to keep up with Philly and Green Bay early in the games but could not. You come out the second half and the offense gets going, but the game is already in control of the other team. Today had a slightly different feel as it looked like the Redskins could stay in the game, but that was derailed by a bad play call on 4th and short half way through the 3rd quarter. Then it followed the script of last years games, the offense making plays when it didn't matter and the defense making no plays to kill off any hope of an actual comeback.

I wasn't overly impressed with McCoy, but he did play better than Griffin the past couple of weeks. His arm is just weak and not accurate at times, but he usually made the right decisions which is a plus. We will see how he does the next few games, as it seems all of the QBs on this roster get worse the more consecutive games they play. Next week against the Rams scares me.

There is also a drastic difference in the running game without Griffin in the lineup. The deficiencies of the o-line are shown as the other teams don't have to worry about the QB keeping it. Maybe they need to have Colt keep the ball on the handoffs early in the game to try and combat that. Even with the running game struggling, I still get tired of coaches going away from it. I've never heard a coach say "We just got away from the passing game and never got back to it", but we hear that all the time about the run game. Especially when the QBs are struggling, some early commitment to the running game could open up the passing game. If the other teams knows you will pass, it makes you easier to defend.

I really, really want to see some consistency and continuity in this organization, but not for the sake of just doing the same thing. I'd want to see the continuity lead to improvements. I'm just not seeing any direction right now, and I feel like we are heading for more change and more of the same merry go round of coaches and QBs.

I'm cracking up at reading that people actually believe that Colt played a similar game to RG3.

It's like we must have watched 2 totally different football games. I don't even see how that is possible. Sure Colt could have played better but it wasn't even close to the train wreck that all of the RG3 starts have been.

Colt gets sacked 6 times on 47 pass attempts, RG3 gets sacked 6 times on 19 pass attempts

Colt passes for 392 yards, RG3 passes for 106 yards

Colt throws 3TD's, RG3 throws 2TD's in 2014 TOTAL in all of his starts.

I stopped pretending that RG3 could run an NFL offense after he put up 7 vs the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 31st ranked defense 2 weeks ago while directly giving them 10 points. Maybe he can come back next year after learning the offense. Sure Grudens playcalling sucks too but RG3 is now 0-2 with coaches and he is probably directly responsible for the last coach getting shit canned so how many offenses and head coaches should the team go through in order to justify what is so far the biggest draft bust in NFL history?

Colt had a solid game. I was pleased overall I'm not hoping for losses but will accept them if the team finds it's way on offense. Draft position gets better each game and piss poor defensive performances like this are what is needed to get Hazlett fired at the end of the season. I realize the youth and lack of depth at db are going to cause some growing pains but they looked really bad for most of the game.
So how many of you would rather draft a rookie qb and start over? If so whom would you draft. I think Colt has as much upside as anyone coming out this season...
