Random Commanders Thoughts

You know, everybody says preseason means absolutely nothing...and alot of it doesn't mean squat..I agree.

But I've been following this team since I was ten yrs old and as I sit here at 44, I've noticed a few things about my team when it comes to how preseason play translates to regular season play.

Now I'm no football guru or former coach, this is just some observations from a lifelong fan...

1: Does your offense look competent? Do they come onto the field and look like they have a clue as to what they're doing. If not, it's time to go out and stock up on alcohol,chocolate ,BBQ etc...whatever your guilty pleasure,comfort food or beverage might be...cause you're going to need it.

2: Pass Rush. Does your team have one? Because if they don't have one in preseason, I don't care how you scheme it up in the regular season, you're not getting one.

3: Defensive Effort. Does your defense swarm to the ball? Do they tackle,at the minimum, competently? If no, tap the keg and fire up the grill(see last sentence,#1)

4: Kicker. Preseason or not, if your kicker sucks in August, you'll most likely be riding the "merry go round" during the season.

This is not meant to be some new revelation to stun the masses. I'm just a middle aged,graying old Redskins fan that's tried to pay some attention over the years, this is just what I've noticed.

Load up, pull the hammer back and shoot as many holes into these as ya want. That's what this board is for. :)

Funny, I'm 44 too. We're practically brothers. :)

One thing I will say is that defense ALWAYS looks better than it really is in the preseason, in particular the pass rush. Ours looked utterly dominant in the preseason last year. Remember how everyone was saying what a steal Tapp was. ... Who? Is that dude still on the team?

Of course, the inverse of this is the offense generally looks like, well nothing.

Do agree about the kicker though. I will amend my rant to note that the kicker battle in the preseason about as real as it gets.
 
I was 44 once.

I know it is only preseason, but some things do cause concern. Griffin did not look comfortable against the Ravens. Was this his development or was the OL having issues?
Probably a little of both. Even Trent Williams had a holding call that negated a nice first down throw and run after catch.

I just hope the media hype doesn't get into the players heads.

Plenty of charcoal and gas for either grill. Will go to St. Georges (mile from house) and get several growlers.
 
Just to keep things in perspective...

The Redskins went 0-4 during the 1982 preseason. We won the Super Bowl that year. We remain the only winless team in preseason to ever accomplish that feat.

During our juggernaut offensive year in 1983, attempting to win a back to back Super Bowl against the Raiders in Tampa Bay (which, sadly, we did not accomplish), we went 2-2 in the preseason. Also, to keep things in perspective, in the 3rd preseason game that year.....the game that is considered the "tune-up" preseason game.....we lost to the Miami Dolphins by a score of 38-7.

Of all teams in history that have gone winless during the preseason, only 50% of those have gone on to losing records in that season.

All in all, I don't think I'm putting much stock into how we do during the preseason. While I DO get excited about seeing the team play again after a long dry spell....and I DO look for specific performances and look for signs that we're on the right path.....and can't HELP getting concerned when I see the play go sour (like we did against Baltimore), there's really no reason to get too excited one way or the other during the preseason. Until game 1 of the regular season, it's all just noise.

And I won't even bring up Spurrier and HIS preseason showing.
 
This RG3 situation is so screwed up, it's just crazy. There are no easy answers when it comes to what to do with him.

Hypothetically speaking, if the team thought he could never develop into a great pocket passer like Brees, Manning, etc......what do you think his trade value is right now? A second? A first?

Directv NFL Sunday ticket has been a blessing from the Gods for us transplants. Instead of having to endure a 49er vs Jag game while being unable to watch the Redskins vs any divisional team. Yeah there are sports bars, but that doesn't always fit in with raising a child or two...Last few years my wife has negotiated it for free...So I'm giving some love to them...If I lived in the Tv broadcast region near D.C. I might feel different.
 
Better hope you never lose line of sight with their satellites...

With all due respect, I've seen him make those progression reads this preseason. I've even watched him go through ALL his progressions and throw a touch pass to Helu over an LB. Helu dropped the ball but Griffin's execution was spot on. In your post you said if this was the beginning of year 2 he would get a pass... As far as his development in a pocket passing style offense, this is year 2. He didnt (as far as we know) do any kind of learning in this style offense in year 1. He ran a read option style offense that was snap decision, single read offense. As far as he's concerned this IS year 2. Then on top of that he's learning a new playbook, which he's not using in game situations.
 
I'm just going to say it. Anyone calling for an RG3 trade is just flat out irrational. The guy came back right after a 2nd total knee repair, hobbled his way through a terrible season (and he had plenty of help in it being a bad season btw), and had a single bad pre-season game. He's the best QB we've had here in 20 years and you guys think we're even considering trading him?

I really can't believe some of the nonsense put out there at times.

A 'source' from 'Baylor'....ooooh.....it's like, a breaking news kind of a thing! My how far 'Hail!' has fallen. At least they finally dropped the 'Magazine' from their moniker. Probably a good idea since they haven't actually published an article in something like 3 years. That drivel does not even warrant a read.
 
I haven't been able to watch any of the preseason, and I'm kind of happy with that. Often, the preseason paints a situation that doesn't translate to reality. I think I saw someone post earlier that they would only get concerned if week 1 this season looks like week 1 last season. That seems to be about the most sane and sound way to approach things.
