Random Commanders Thoughts

A shot at lavar is still a good one, no matter who does it.

Talk about overrated and overpaid.

I'm half with ya. half not so.

1) I thought he made mistakes because he was too much into the biz/money aspect of things early on. on the other hand, so are a lot of players these days.

2) On the radio...I like what he has to say at times simply because he doesn't race bait like so many media/celebrity types do (wilbon? wise?)

anywho....he is what he is. and so is Spurrier!!!

I like Lavar's show also. Being out of town I rarely catch it, so maybe lack of exposure is the reason.

I didn't know you could take 3 shots in the second round and miss on all of them

It takes a special level of incompetence to defeat the law of averages

rumors are the salary cap is expected to rise quite a bit (it actually should have gone down the other year, but they reallocated our space to other teams...) which may give the redskins even more room than anyone anticipated.

which would make me accept the hall and impending orakpo deal much easier.

Went up $7M, according to BB in another thread.

7 million more? Nice!

Can you say Guard and Right Tackle? :)

It's just amazing to me how many must-have players there are on a 3-13 team.

People talk about Orakpo, Hall, Riley and some others as if they are rare rubies that we could never replace.

Right now I don't see any players on defense that are must haves at any price.

I don't doubt that Shanahan meddled with the defense and special teams.

But at the heart of the failure in 2013 was a lack of talent.

The D didn't have enough speed, youth or explosiveness.

I think this defense needs more than say one or two free agents and a couple of draft picks to turn the corner.

Due respect to Haz but I don't see seven returning starters from 2013, at least not if you are trying to get better long-term.

So your philosophy is, if the Roof's leaking, gotta tear down the whole house and start over?

Not buying it. We have some workable pieces here. Let's not throw the baby out with the bath water.

at reasonable cost. If I am the owner of a business I am not going to subsidize mediocre performance with top echelon pay.

this team on defense is closer to starting over in terms of putting the talent together to challenge the big boys than some people think.

people point to the Chiefs and what Andy Reid did there in 2013.

but on defense the Chiefs had anchor players like Poe on the DL, Houston and Hali at LB and Berry at S.

we don't have any DL as dominant inside as Poe. we don't have guys in the secondary that have the impact Berry does.

Houston/Hali at this point are further along than Kerrigan/Orakpo.

Then when you throw in some of their other defensive players vs. our depth/complementary guys, there is definitely a talent deficit here in DC.

Miss on 3 second round picks?

A 12 year old using Street and Smith's could run a draft board better than Vinny Cerrato.

It's a mediocre unit as constituted.

I didn't say Orakpo can't play, just that there are no consensus all pros here, so overpaying anyone to keep them would be a mistake.

It's not just a 3-13 team either. 6-10, 5-11, 10-6, 3-13. Take out a 7 game win streak and you're looking at a really bad team... Makes me really rethink my opinions of Shanahan's time here.

Orakpo is the only one under consideration for "top echelon pay," and that's only a maybe. We don't' know what he's going to get on the open market yet.

You don't like Rak, that's fine. You're not alone, there are a lot of people who think he's not worth top-5 or even top-10 money. But here's the thing...if we don't pay Rak what he's worth, we're going to get sub-par talent for cheaper. So if you think Rak is mediocre, what do you think less money is going to get? A bird in hand is worth two in the bush...do you think we should waste a valuable draft pick on a position we already have in hand? We all know the uncertainty the draft brings. Not to mention, People LOVE to hate on Jim Haslett around here, with good cause. How bad will he be if you start taking AWAY what talent he DOES have?

But right now, we have a ton of cap space (+$7M more, according to reports), around $33-36M (not sure if that includes Hall or not). As Henry points out, we currently don't have an upper-echelon contract on the roster, which is part of the reason we're going to have such massive cap room. We don't get a "bonus" if we don't use the cap space, so why not use it? As Henry points out, if we continue to be mediocre for a few years, we're going to be in this same situation with our offensive players in a few years.

So, to recap:
We can tell Rak to piss off, and let someone else "overpay" him (I don't think we'd be overpaying him, but I may be in the minority). In this scenario, we have to find a replacement either in the draft, or in free agency. Here is the top-10 (according to Rotoworld) OLB free agents:

1. Brian Orakpo
2. Jason Worilds
3. Shaun Phillips
4. Mike Neal
5. O'Brien Schofield
6. Rob Jackson
7. Erin Henderson
8. Jo-Lonn Dunbar
9. Keith Rivers
10. Jonathan Casillas

That there is some slim pickins. Two of the top 10 are our free-agents! Rob Jackson is number 6!! Yikes! So, that leaves the draft. This is a very deep draft, according to some...but that's always a crap shoot. We might be able to find first round talent as late as the third round, but probably not at a premium position like OLB. So, you get someone who isn't quite ready, and one of the top-10 fills in while he is schooled.

Or, we can re-sign Rak and Jackson, draft another OLB for depth, and use our top-draft picks on REAL positions of need, like OL, OL, or possibly OL. Maybe a WR or MLB, if superlative talent falls to us at 34th overall.

With no 1st-round pick, our options are very limited. Re-signing Rak is really the only option.

It's not about liking Orakpo or not. I don't know why you guys that think we have to sign him for whatever the cost are determined to make this about liking him or not, or not wanting him on the team.

It's about cost vs value. You guys evaluate his value more than we do. Nothing more, nothing less.

And if he leaves, replacing him is not a this year or never proposition. Just because there's not a solid, can't miss replacement available right now doesn't mean we should keep him. We can put in a stop gap and wait until next year, or give a universally lower-valued guy a chance.

It certainly wouldn't be the first time a guy that's 'ranked' less than the alternatives came in and outperformed.

What is the goal here though? To be "okay" this year, and hope for the best in 2015? Or to put the best team possible on the field in 2014, and try to win the division again? Its not unheard of for terrible teams to turn it around in one offseason. "Putting in a stop-gap and waiting until next year" sounds a lot like the latter...and I'm tired of waiting until next season, I don't know about you.

We've seen over and over and over again, great QBs losing the superbowl because they get harassed by the opposing team's pass-rush. Tom Brady (twice), Peyton Manning (x2), Roethlispickle. And here we are, talking about letting our best pass-rusher go, and replacing him with a "stop-gap."

We have the money, we have the need for pass-rush (every team does), where's the question? Bring Rak back, end of story.

For those saying it's easy peasy lemon squeezy to replace Rak...

This is also the franchise that went from 1997 to 2009 without spending one high pick(first two rounds) on a pass rusher.

Some of you act like: It's ok..we'll get us one at the pass rusher store....

Never works out that way around here.
