Random Commanders Thoughts

DHall and the team are getting closer to a contract. Teams can start using the franchise tag starting tomorrow.

Hearing a few rumblings that we could have an entirely new OL next year - with the exception of Williams.
 
If the team permanently shelves TyPo and Chester I'd call that an offseason success.

The D-Hall resigning sounds good as long as the price is fair.

No doubt, fingers crossed. I think it's going to come down to how much he likes/wants to play for Haz. Same with Rak
 
Interesting thought there Win. I wonder if retaining Rak and Hall was part of the reason for retaining Haz?

I don't think there's going to be much a market for him at his age.

I really like Hall... and I've been super critical of him since he got here... I think he's almost exactly what we want. His petulance on the field is never going to go away, neither is his risk taking, but he's come up big often enough that I now really like him and want him back.

I'd be really curious to see how he does with 2 legit safties, a decent pass rush, and LB's that can function both in coverage and rushing...

It seemed like when he got burned there was a good case that it was someone else's fault... some of the biggest back breaking plays came when the other QB had forever to get rid of the ball, and in the league today you just can't be expected to cover your guy for more than 3 seconds...

i don't think he has the body, or honestly the mind set, to be a legit safety. I see a safety being a 3rd tier LB - They have to be able to lay a bit hit when the opportunity presents itself, and otherwise provide solid tackling in the open field. Hall doesn't strike me as a guy that can do either.

there's been lots of talk about hall being a ball-hawking safety over the last few years. it hasn't happened.

is it because shanahan the wicked witch wouldn't allow it? maybe he was the best corner on the team and that trade off was weighed and determined we needed him at corner? maybe he privately refuses to move? maybe he just isn't good at it?

i don't know, but after so many years of entertaining this idea and never seeing it even tried, i'm resigned to believe there is something that is blocking this from happening an it's nothing more than a pipe dream among us fans :\

Free Safeties don't necessarily have to lay the wood. With the new rules protecting the WR more than ever, perhaps the days of the big-hitting safety are over?

I don't think so, I think it makes having a smart one all the more important.

You can still hit receivers hard. You just can't hit them in the head/neck/shoulder area and you have to use your shoulder to do it.

Plus, making open field tackles and being able to get through a gap to make a play on a run is an important role of safeties in my opinion. I guess the argument is for him to be a free safety more than a strong, so maybe that doesn't really matter.

Nope, if they're deemed "defenseless," I don't think it matters where you hit them.

I used to think that too but was corrected rather crudely once, which is why I now remember it :)

NFL Communications - Definition of a Defenseless Player «

section a defines being the act of catching as being a defenseless receiver
section b defines what constitutes illegal hits on a person in section a - which is hitting in the head, neck, shoulder, and forearm areas as well as leading with the crown of your helmet.

a legit tackle in the mid to low torso area on a guy that just caught the ball is perfectly legal. most safeties either shy away or hit the guy illegally.

But D Hall is not exactly a good tackler and as a safety he would have to be. His hands would matter but he would have to be more textbook with his wrapping and not just using a shoulder.

Right, according to the rules, you're correct. But we've all seen how the refs actually call it; if the hit is anywhere near the head, it's flagged. If the tackler even remotely leads with the crown, it's flagged. Refs are calling it very tight, opting to err on the side of penalty more often than not.

I saw plenty of hits that were not flagged because they didn't involve the crown or that area of the body right after/during a catch.

But yes - if he leads with his crown or hits in the upper area of the body then it gets flagged.

Or in the B or C gap taking on an RB going off tackle. If we want to put him at in Nickle situations, I can see it because generally you need more speed over the top when the offense spreads out. FS are responsible for covering space, but also covering TE. The trend in the NFL has been the athletic TE and their ability to attack the seams. The new wave of safety almost has to be a converted LB. Someone who can get out to CF, but can also cover the likes of Jimmy Graham, Jordan Reed, Antonio Gates, and Jason Witten. Hall would be manhandled by all of those guys, out of sheer size. Not a bash on Hall, but it's a scary mismatch.
 
Redskins have reached a deal with DHall. Details coming later when Boone posts the formal announcement.

Edited to add that it is a four year deal.
 
Cool beans!

Hall has been our best corner since he first signed here. Of course, his initial contract made everybody's eyes lie to them. I'll assume Allen got him at a fair price.
