Random Commanders Thoughts

Yeah, I saw the response last night. Been begging for this kind of response. Would love to see it made by some Indian leaders around the country, too.

I wish my uncle was still on the tribal council....

I bet we all do. Of course, I also realized when I made the statement, that the people who really are working their asses off trying to improve the lives of America's Indians, don't waste time on such a silly quest.

Do you have an assessment of the best organizations doing the work, and where to donate? Should it be done regionally, or is there a one stop destination?

Costas has always been full of himself. He sits there with his legs crossed during interviews motioning with his hands as if he were Edward R. Murrow during World War 2 as a top journalist.

He's covering sports :)

It's not life or death, potential end of civilization concerns but he tries to make them so.

Mostly I think to make himself seem important.

I'll PM you.

The ENTIRE problem here is a very small PC minority is trying to co-op this word and turn it into an offensive word it never was. If it really was rooted in bigotry then I'd be a lot more open to the debate but the entire basis is a traceable lie. And SnT is spot on when he talks about the false equivalence and silliness of the question about walking up to an Indian and calling them a Redskin. I would never introduce anyone with a descriptor of their race any more than I would walk up to anyone of ANY race and refer to them by a physical descriptor of any kind. It's also true that with seemingly little to no exception the word Redskins is never used in any context but one referring to the football team. Facts matter and this entire debate boils down to some very simple facts that one side absolutely refuses to even acknowledge in their misguided quest for PC. I'd love to know where the Dictionaries are getting their source material for definitions on this one because it's been traced by industry leading linguistic historians and the whole notion of it ever having been racist or offensive has been thoroughly debunked. I find it more than a little disturbing that much of this debate hinges on the word's definition and Webster's et al are basically ignoring historical fact and linguistic research to make their contribution. The definition needs to be changed...period.

this is a good post.

I'll add a qualifier by anecdote. so, I leave the doctor's office yesterday and see someone sitting in the car parked next to mine. I see he is wearing a Redskin cap. So, I roll around, knock on the window and we talk Skins and cars. Somehow, it turns out we use the same dealership. I mention a young gal there who I placed great stock in because I trust her but she had been promoted so was no longer working the line. He responds "You mean the black girl (name withheld)!" I smiled and responded, "yup." The guy I was talking to was African-American. There's nothing wrong with using these attributes. The hard part is understanding context and, in some instances, having to wait t understand what the rules are in a given exchange. but that is also what is wrong with the whole situation.

cooley just said (paraphrasing):
if you think the problem is that robert needs to work on his 2nd and 3rd reads, or that we need a new offensive line you're the guy on the couch that doesn't actually know football.

I love czabe

"Cousin's interview to start ratio is starting to get upside-down"

Galdi: "John Beckian"

Yup...

OK, given the lack of context...care to expound?

he talked about it for a while, and most of it he's mentioned before.

the short of it...
griffin was the cause of the sacks, he leaves the pocket too early, they don't know how to block because they don't know where it is
he doesn't have trouble getting to his 2nd and 3rd reads, other problems are causing that and football people can see them (especially those that understand the offensive system and play calls)
the offensive line is actually pretty good

there were others. it's not my opinion, so i'm not going to do it justice defending the statement. i'm one that thought, and shared quite often, that i thought griffin had problems seeing the field and going through progressions. i believe i got in arguments with people here over comments about route trees and stuff.

but i have no problem with a guy that played in this system, with these guys, telling me i'm just a guy on the couch that doesn't know much about football.

if you're actually interested in what he had to say the pod casts are normally up about 24 hours later. it would be at the end of the last segment of the day. he's really interesting to listen to so i definitely recommend you check it out.

I'm with Cooley: soon as the team moved off the novelly of the read option...they excelled!!! last season was probably the most dominating, scintillating display of offensive football I can remember. Polumbus did his thing so Robert could learn how to play under duress - I get it. and the very first game...fumble in the end zone? just a great team trying to create a challenge! I get that too. and all of Robert's overthrows, in the dirt zingers, unseen open receivers? by design!!!!!! sarcasm directed at Cooley. he's protecting allegiances.

so what's left? cuz, in the end, it's either execution or play call. and what I saw was team with receivers who could not get separation, an o-line that couldn't pass pro, and a QB all over the map - even when the blocking unintentionally worked.

I guess I'm a guy on the couch, although I do agree that Griffin took off too early all to often.

Still not buying the OL isn't as bad as we think it is. It's bad.

Thanks for giving more context.

let's face it. that team last season sucked. Shanahan may have created issues - but he wasn't on the field getting man-handled, generating stupid penalties at inopportune times, dropping passes, fumbling the ball, etc., etc. it was baaaaaaaaaad!

hey, they lost to dallas twice. no more needs to be said. not interested in excuses.

The people that do the rankings agree with Cooley.

I think if we got a solid C and a solid RT our line would be tremendously improved, I don't think it's a completely shit show, but I think we we need a new C and RT and good/solid ones to make the rest of the line work.

So, I'm not in agreement with the guys that do the rankings and Cooley either, but that is what they're saying...

If you're interested in his thoughts I think they're really compelling and worth checking out... it really makes me wish I had more inside knowledge of professional football...

That's why I think Alex Mack is the most important Free Agent we should grab...if he isn't franchised. I also believe we need to upgrade Lichtensteiger...he is small. The only hope is that Chester was playing inured as I have heard. Put Mack in between the 2 and we are much better. Like you say, get Mack and get a solid RT and our team is better. But this year's unit was poor. I don't care what anyone says. The one thing I will give Shanahan credit for is that he was able to disguise the poor pass pro when we won the division.

I know I'm the guy on the couch. But what I saw sitting on my couch was constant pressure up the middle that wouldn't allow RG3 to step up. So how can he step up if there is no where to step up? I do believe RG3 escaped the pocket too quickly on many occasions. I also believe that in many occasions he escaped the pocket because he had no other options. A QB can make the OL look bad, and the OL can make the QB look bad. The Redskins has both throughout last year.

I do worry that they won't upgrade the offensive line like we hope. But I think that there is some coaching, play calling, and scheming that can be done to make the entire offense better with the current personnel.

rankings based on what? some statistics based formula or actual game/situation observation?

you just stated that if we replaced 40% of the o-line we'll be fine!!!!

not digging at you. I listened to Cooley when I could. he's good at explaining the mechanics of a play call and obecjtives. he aslso made a lot of bad predictions about his favorite (understandably) team.

just singling you out for an example - you're the umpteenth person who has latched onto "I'm just the guy on a couch..." theme. don't forget you and a million other fans (ok...and TV) pay the bills! we're entitled!

there's groups out there that track ratings for positions using obscure stats to track their performance and have algorithms for calculating the ratings using those stats. some also calculate them on cost of replacement with an average player. i have no idea what all goes into it... it sounds pretty rigorous but i've never investigated it myself.

Pro Football Focus and Pro Football Reference are the two i hear about the most. I'm sure there's more, maybe those two aren't even the best ones.

i believe they all require subscriptions to really access them, i think they mainly serve beat reporters. i know our resident stats guy used to have access, probably still does :)

i'm just sharing the information. i have no idea how right he is anymore. when he first came on in august i really bought in on what he was saying. i've grown skeptical too, though not a whole lot.

his film break downs sound awesome and are very compelling, so if he's bs'ing then he's good at it.

i enjoyed him saying almost all of the color broadcasters are wrong in how they describe what is happening on the field. He said Gruden is the best and everyone else is pretty much awful.
