Random Commanders Thoughts

The thing that stood out to me in the second half was the fact that the team fought back-hard. They came back from what seemed like an insurmountable deficit to make an honest serious game of it. That, to me, bodes well for the future. Did the Eagles just slack off with a big lead-possibly, but why didn't they adjust when it became apparent we were outplaying them in the second half? Were they too tired-or were we just playing at a level they couldn't adjust to? I think that's something to consider.

Sure, as tshile pointed out, we didn't have any idea what the Eagles were going to do at the start, like Zorn's early success early in 2008. They'll probably get figured out, we were just the first to face that uncertainty. Add to that the rust, the lack of preseason participation by Griff and Morris. Possibly a strategic miscalculation by Shanahan but to what extent is questionable.

A caveat here, in a preseason that seemed filled with season ending injuries to major players throughout the league, can you completely blame Shanahan for not wanting to risk injuring RG3 in the preseason? If that had happened the Redskins fanbase would have had the tar and feathers in place in 24 hours. I'm not trying to completely excuse Shanahan just saying there are understandable reasons for why he might have taken that position.

I saw more of the Redskins I expected to see in that second half. Is all the rust gone? Doubtful. Is RG3 really hampered in his passing by that knee? I'm thinking that may be possible but time will tell. Was his lack of rushing a result of caution on his part, the coaching staff, both?

These are some of the questions I'm waiting to observe the answers to emerge.

But that second half told me one thing. This team will not roll over-for anybody-no matter the score. They will fight back.

Right now I will say that any team having a lead on the Redskins making the assumption that they have the game well in hand will be making a mistake.

Things will get better. :)

The more I think about it, the more I don't think Kelly ran anything he didn't run at Oregon. Its like Haslett didn't watch any film from Kelly's college days.

Maybe. I was pretty happy with Haz last night though. He didn't miss the tackles, and he made adjustments quicker than he did last year. Almost all the adjustments were made after halftime last year, and we seemed to get substantially better midway through the second Q. I wonder if Haz didn't overthink it? Maybe he looked at the tape from ORE and thought there would be no way Kelly would come out with a playbook straight out of his college days, and was surprised when that's exactly what he did. I dunno. But I thought he adjusted well.

Griffin wasn't rusty, he was just exhausted following his pre-game introduction. Took until late third quarter to get his second wind.

Reports that Kerrigan is fine and will practice are coming out.

According to Shanahan, the Eagles ran just one play the Redskins hadn't seen on film before. One. And yet, on almost every first-half play, we looked like lost puppies. WTF.

Sunday marks Kedric Golston's 100th game as a pro - pretty good accomplishment for a 6th round pick. Golston is also the longest tenured Redskin not named Santana Moss.

the second half of the season will be a good test to see how god the eagles are i doubt they finish strong
the redskins look like they are still under the radar and yesterdays loss will keep them there a little while

I think the fist half of the game couldn't have been worse except the score could have been worse. Vick, McCoy and Desean Jackson have lit the Redskins up before. Actually worse than this. Griff was rusty no doubt and We shouldn't be surprised. Morris put the offense in a hole early with the turnovers and a safety. Add in 2 interceptions. A win is a win a loss is a loss. I was happy to see Griffins mobility and he took a couple of good shots as well. There were dropped passes too many penalties.
No doubt the Eagles offense embarrassed the Defense but they were used to that from last season. I think a lesson in humility will serve RG3 and the rest of the team well this season. I am confused by the fan reactions.Talking heads on tv as well. What did the rational thinkers expect from Griffin?
Vick was absorbing a lot of hits. Didn't we as fans and the talking heads agree that an offense shouldn't be designed that allows for so many hits on the starting qb? I think our offense will be fine there might be a transitional issues but I hope they find a way to reduce the amount of hits that RG3 takes over the season.
Vick won't last 3 more games if the Eagles continue down this path. Vick is even smaller than RG3 and always has durability issues.

Haslett wasn't missing tackles at a 3...4...5 player pace. McCoy is good but the tackling was as rusty as Griffin.

Yeah, that was one of my first observations. Tackling was piss-poor. Can't stop any offense (gimmick or otherwise) if you can't tackle. Sigh.

why do people keep referring to their offense as a gimmick? this coach ran this offense in college for a while, very successfully.

did most of us not think it was ridiculous to call our offense last year a gimmick? how is it different? if anything this years eagle's offense should have even more credibility since the person running it is the one that ran it in college?

Because it *IS* a gimmick. He ran it successfully in college, just like Steve Spurrier ran his fun n gun successfully at Florida (and now South Carolina, albeit slightly less so).

Gimmick just means something that is new to the NFL; our offense was a gimmick last year also. Just turns out it works, and pretty well (although opinions on that vary).

Well if you're going to be all logical and rational about it then fine ;)

There were a lot of people getting angry about the use of the word gimmick to describe our offense - maybe that didn't go on so much here, maybe it was more people on the radio. I do find it funny when the same people use it to describe the eagle's offense though ;)

Yeah, it happens all the time. People have different ideas of what a word means, and get horribly offended when someone uses that word (even though their definition is not offensive at all). Across all forums!
