So... I don't pay very close to scheduling as far as days and times go until the week of the game is upon me, and this week is no exception. I just Fear's post in another thread that we are playing this Saturday. What the ****, NFL? I am not one for conspiracy theories, but the 2012 cap penalty forced me to reexamine that possibility.

So we play on a Sunday Night game, and then have to play Thanksgiving; and now we play on Monday Night and have to turn around and play on Saturday?

First of all, I never want to hear Roger Gooddell say anything about caring about the players' safety - that should be derided as the bullshit it clearly is. Secondly, I'm starting to wonder about the NFL having it out for us. If you told me Mara is connected to the scheduling process, I would not be a bit surprised.

Don't matter much to me but I do understand the 'concern' of a lot of quick turnarounds on the back end of the season.

Nope, had no idea.

Tom's point stands. They should have canceled the MNF game because they're so concerned about the players' safety.

And by "players' safety" I mean their wallets.

Gruden is an offensive coach and if we don't have a respected defensive coordinator in the War Room to speak up for the D we are going to continue to see this team draft wide receivers and running backs while ignoring NTs and safeties.

You have to balance out talent to win.

You can't tilt 75/25 to offense and expect great results.

Even with Peyton Manning and a prolific pass offense the 2013 Broncos were handed their asses in the Super Bowl by a much better balanced Seattle team.

The defense might have lead Seattle but the offense had productive players at key spots as well.

The Patriots have been similarly balanced.

It's telling that Belichick doesn't draft wide receivers high very often but signs them as mid-tier free agents.

He tends to draft OL and DL high as well as linebackers.

He also fills in at cornerback with a big free agent signing or two, but gets guys like Talib or Revis on one year deals so the commitment, while substantial, is short-term.

Notice he didn't resign Talib, Revis or Browner to new deals after the first contracts expired.

If I could see Belichick in our position in April 2016, with the talent spread in this roster as it is, there is NO WAY he takes a wide receiver at #22.

With Garcon and Jackson signed through 2016 and Crowder coming on as a younger player with Reed, Belichick would have selected a DL, LB or traded down for a safety high in Round 2.

And the wide receivers?

He wouldn't worry about that now, and would go after a mid-range free agent and/or middle round picks in 2017.

Why worry about tripling up with depth at one position when you have waiver wire guys starting at other spots?

Doesn't make any sense.

One more nugget to chew on:

If Doctson was really the best receiver in the draft, how come we didn't receive any offers for the pick at #22 to select him.

Houston was willing to move up one spot and give us a pick in 2017 to take a wide receiver but the irony is it was someone other than Doctson.

When we come up with a personnel strategy to build a well balanced roster between offense and defense, and don't have to go into the secondary free agent or waiver market to come up with starters such as Donte Whitner, Dashon Goldson, Ziggy Hood, Shawn Lauvao, Cullen Jenkins, etc. so that we can have three or four deep at one or two positions to please specific coaches.

The other thing is we may all owe Bruce Allen an apology.

That 2014 draft has produced Morgan Moses (RT), Spencer Long (C), and Trent Murphy (sacks leader for much of season).

Brandon Scherff made the pro bowl and didn't give up a sack this season. That was a great pick by Scot in hindsight even though a bit unorthodox in terms of where you find a franchise guard.

But the pick of Preston Smith could be a pretty big miss given our needs on that side of the ball.

As may be the pick of Kendall Fuller, who was rated by us as a first round draft talent but hasn't really shown THAT kind of ability coming in as a third-rounder.

He looks like a third or fourth round pick out there. Some upside and learning the game.

But he's not a blue-chipper as our front office seemed to think early on.

Never, I suspect. As resident GM/personnel critic, there will always be something you would have done differently, and much better.

Yes, those of you who blindly, and swiftly, criticized everything the man ever did, look like you may have been wrong more than you want to admit.

2 years after being shellacked by many, including you, for the picks. Amazing what a little time can do for some players. sure, it would be great if everyone we picked was in the running for ROY, every year. Some guys take a little longer to reach the potential seen by those making the selections. Regardless of what round they where selected. Which actually only influences their rookie contract. Not the ability/inability to play the game at the pro level.

Understandable, for those who put too much stock into where guys come from. And not enough in to how they turned out.

I've heard more than one person say that coming back from the injury he had, he's actually done ok. He may be a flop. But, he may be our latest Morgan Moses, come next season. But I guess, for you, immediate success is the only criteria to measure such things.

You asked in another post somewhere, for someone to name ONE PLAY that Ionnidis ever made. Well, against Philly, I saw a play where he split a double team, and tackled the RB for no gain. So, there. Who's to say that after an offseason weight program, another set of OTA's, and preseason, that he won't start to show the potential Scot saw in him? Sure, my optimistic hope is counter to your premature negative evaluation. But, both possibilities are still in play.

Also, in reference to your point that nobody tried to trade ahead of us to pick Doctson last year...nobody traded ahead of us to draft Darrell Green either. Please, tell me how that mattered.

Doctson, like every single player ever drafted, could be a bust.

Has anyone figured out why is there such huge disparity between the level of our run-blocking and our pass-blocking ?
If anything, shouldn't it be the other way around ? Run-blocking is supposed to be easier for linemen than pass-blocking, right ?

There is no commitment, or belief, by the current coaching staff, to having a good rushing attack. The players sense that, and match the efforts of the coaching staff.

Perhaps, but I think there must be more factors to account for it, than that.
I mean, unless it's the same way in practice - they run far more pass-blocking plays than runs in practice. Callahan is supposed to be a great run-blocking coach too, isn't he ?

Sure there's more to it. But I believe the root of the problem lies with the disdain our former QB head coach has for running the ball. He's a system guy. And his system is passing.

Nothing, is better than his system.
