Random Commanders Thoughts

Hard for me to imagine I'm saying this, but that is what a good offense does to a bad defense. By mid way through the second half, I thought I had fallen asleep and was dreaming.... this has to be a dream.... my team doesn't look like this in prime time.

The real test is Thursday....
 
Gruden's call was situational football mindset at it's best.

Balls it is.... taking the risk of potential season collapse if it failed but against the wind, tough punt, Rodgers in full operational mode, down by less than a TD (because of the other 'ballseee' calls that failed), time not on our side...... you name it....... it worked, props to the team for getting it done.

Gruden's post game was also about the most 'straight faced' I seen after a win with just a little 'grin' when referring to Kelly's performance as a receiver in the flat.

Can't complain right now about him getting this team ready to play, he has them marching into the second half of the season improving game by game, all is not perfect but problems areas that existed early on seem to be getting fixed or at least tweaked enough to survive.

It's taken some time but McD just might be on to something.

Yeah, you are right. It was late and I didn't even realize I typed it wrong. But my main point was how gutsy it was and how it was a great sign to see.

He's got a huge pair and I believe all Redskins fans will eventually love the guy. Here are three quick examples of his huevos:

1. Cousins over RG3. God knows that wasn't easy or popular. The fans loved RG3, and the owner too. That was big.

2. Cooley and Keim both mention a TE last year that McLovin signed and was very high on. But he couldn't block. Per Cooley, this was the closest McLovin and Gruden came to a disagreement last year. McLovin wanted him to play. Gruden refused to even let him see the field. After three weeks McLovin gave in, and released him.

3. McLovin was very high on Matt Jones. One of his high draft choices, and he even called him the next big breakout star on the team. Gruden gave him a shot, now he doesn't even dress.

Both guys will make mistakes. But Gruden can spot talent and be trusted to play the best guys--regardless of where they were drafted, or who it might upset. I doubted him on Trent Murphy, but I was wrong. Hell, Ryan Grant even caught a pass last night. I favor Ross, but understand that it's either Ross or Desean in terms of being active.

I've always preferred that a team have both a GM and a HC. But if anything ever did happen with McLovin, I'd be confident in Gruden as an interim GM too. He was a GM for many years at lower levels and he put together one winning team after another.

I think the two work well together, and that we're in for a fantastic season. Now let's go beat the living hell out of Dallas.

It's funny, but when I saw down and distance, I was yelling "grow a set and go for it.... run the keeper." Needless to say, I almost s*** myself when we did. It was also a extremely fun thing to see another team pull the starting QB late in a game because they were thoroughly beaten with no hope of a win.

The expression, "say uncle" comes to mind......
 
Is that stupid ass tie bothersome to look at for anyone else? It's just bleh in our win-loss record.
 
Kirk Cousins' first attempt at contract re-negotiations with Scot.
Even head-slaps the Scot. Not sure that helps his case :paranoid: - as Scot kind of low-balled him in the counter-offer, with "Eh, you were 'okay' tonite against the Pack"

Does anybody feel like when Santana Moss retired, he went to some mad scientist who could reverse aging, and make him perform like a 23 year old, and then he came back to the Redskins under the alias, Jamison Crowder ?
Or they simply cloned Moss into Crowder ?
Or something like that.

Yup should have won that one... but it could have just as easily been a loss. I hate seeing it in our record but I'm trying to think more positive in that it could be a loss. Real test Thursday. And some of the "experts" are actually giving us a chance (not picking us, mind you, but giving us a chance).
 
I have serious concerns about Compton out there on D. First of all, he's slow. He's often late getting the D set up - there were numerous instances against the Packers of the D not being set or Compton even having his head turned backwards when the ball was snapped. I believe the blown coverage that lead to the easy TD was his fault. I know he makes the occasional good play, but overall I think he's physically a liability out there. London Fletcher he ain't.

Aside from Compton's physical limitations, there may be some mind games going on too.
Rodgers couldn't get his twelve man substitution penalties this time so I suspect he was playing with Compton's call sequence to gain advantage.
But yeah, the keystone cop element did present itself a bit too much, hopefully they can fix it and Compton is not over thinking things too much.
 
The Keystone Kops routine we pulled on pass defense a few times is what had me fearing the worst, right up until Fat Rob cashed in on Josh Norman's epic right cross fumble-inducer and got that insurance TD. Compton has always been more a try-hard, effort guy than a natural, and that's been largely okay given he is supposedly really good at calling signals and getting people lined up right.

I'm hoping to learn more this week about why it went off the rails so many times Sunday night. Maybe it was Rodgers pulling strings, or maybe Barry was slow getting calls made, or maybe Compton was just having a bad night, or maybe it was something else entirely. I just know we had at least seemed to stop totally blowing coverages on a regular basis in the weeks heading into this game ... and then suddenly there it was again. If we see more of that Thursday in Dallas, we are in trouble. We're going to need to make them earn every point--anything easy, given I expect they will possess the ball on us more and more as the game progresses and their OL wears our front seven down--and we're going to need Kirk and the O to go crazy again to have a realistic shot.
