Random Commanders Thoughts

People are assuming that Griffin is either going to gain redemption or he is going to fall flat and be riding the bench by Game 3 or 4.

I think it is much more realistic to believe that Griffin will be in that 18-25 range of quarterbacks, occasionally making the big play downfield with his arm but still taking the unnecessary sack as well, completing the 6 yard pass to the FB or TE while a WR is open 15-18 yards on the other side of the field, etc.

One thing that will keep him on the field is the limitations of the other quarterbacks.

While Griffin can play himself into coming back next year, I don't see Kirk Cousins or Colt McCoy being here in 2016 either as a starter or again as a backup.

If it's a re-start, ALL three will be gone.

If Griffin is here to stay, the club needs to grab a developmental qb in the draft.

You know El, not to get personal, but you recently shared as publically as possible that there was a time in your life when everyone around you had written you off, that your life was over, and there was no chance that would change.

But it did.

It's strange to me that you can't conceive of the possibility of redemption in others. I don't know if Griffin can turn it around and succeed. But I know that potential evolution would be nothing compared to what you did in your own life. Surely you can see it can happen.

Apples - oranges. There were always limits to what I was capable of doing in this world...I never bought into the idea that I could be anything I want. I alway knew I could never be a professional QB...just saying.

Is he capable of humility? Of course...an egoist can transform. It usually happens when they are faced with circumstances that help them see the reality of their situation...you know, like not really being Superman. That's not the argument and that is a far cry from not being talented enough to carry your team to long term success in the NFL unless your coach runs a gimmick offense for you.

Yeah, he's soooo bad that neither Cousins nor McCoy have even challenged him during the OTAs.

Everyone says he's improved.

Oh, and I've bookmarked your post...it will be fun to revisit during the season.

I have always said, and will still maintain...if this cat proves me wrong, it will be a good thing! I will admit I was wrong and after as we entered the playoffs in 2012, I ate some crow on this site. Go back and look.

But as I sat 30 feet from RG3 writhing in pain in front of me, I knew I was correct. His style of play will never succeed long term in the NFL.

Edit: Oh and rising to the top of a talentless crowd does not make you great...it just makes you better than bad. You have not heard me say anything about any other QB so bringing their names into serves...well...nothing!

I'm disappointed by your reply - because I think there's an obvious truth to my point that you are casually shrugging aside. Humans are wonderful beings - and redemption is always possible.

***Edit*** - and I know I'm not your Mom or Dad! I love ya El, I just think a lot of your thinking is colored (as has mine been) by Griffin's 'look-at-me' personality, and that maybe there is still a chance he is capable of growth and can be 'the guy'. I also think you are overstating the case on Griffin being nothing but a gimmick success in a read option offense. Yeah, that's been the basis of his success, but he does have some skills, and I think he deserves a little bit more respect than you give him credit for...

I ceded your point...he is capable of redemption in the sense of his personality, character flaws. I agree. However, there is no redemption in his ability to be a long term, successful QB in the NFL. He's just not capable. Just like, I know I am a quality photographer, but I will never be Ansel Adams. My character, morality changed, but my abilities are limited...just a fact. It's the same with his ability on the field...he's a one trick pony running on 3 legs.

Wow. I thought you could be Ansel Adams. Bummer. I think where your view is wrong is that Ansel Adams isn't the universal definition of success. Success can take a lot of varied paths.

That being said, you are the Ansel Adams of stubbornness :)

Character flaws. Lol

Are you saying youthful hubris is not a character flaw?

And if that's all you got out of the conversation, I am not sure why you even felt the need to comment. This is the second worthless post you've made in reaction to me speaking out about Griffin. Offer more, I know you're capable.

William Orland Kilmer, Jr. was a 1st round pick in the 1961 draft. (11th overall) He primarily played running back for the 49'ers his rookie year. He had Steve Young type running ability as a QB.
A shattered leg in a car accident ended his career as a running back, and forced what had been an elusive, mobile QB, to become a sitting duck, immobile one. Stuck in the pocket for the rest of his career.

Now, many differences between him and Robert, I know.

But Robert, even at reduced athletic ability, is still faster, with a better arm, than most QB's in the league. And it is absolutely possible for him to transition his game. Maybe it will take the full 5+ years that QB's used to rightfully be given to do so. So what? As long as he does it.

The kid has succeeded at everything he's done. That history, warrants the belief many of us have in him, IMHO.

If we are right, Brother El should have to eat 4 whole, fresh from the garden tomato's. One right after the other. And post it in the video library. :)

I'm not one to characterize a persons behavioral actions as 'character flaws' unless they show a pattern that is unbecoming in a civilized society. It's not like he's ever stolen a freight train. I get that you don't like him. You are entitled not to, of course. I am probably closer to you on his positional abilities as most would think. But as a human being, from my vantage point, I think he has a ton of positive characteristics. He has a lot of self-confidence as an athlete? He Tweets too much? Oh no, the horrors!

And as far as my "worthless posts" go- value is in the eye of the beholder. But thanks for keeping track of my work and for the pep talk. :)

Seems as if Leonard Williams is blowing up with the Jets. Coaches have said he is further along in learning NFL defenses and playing 'fast' on the field than they had anticipated. He should start the season with Wilkerson on the injured list.

Maybe he was the best player in the draft after all? :)

At least the Redskins have cover in that 4 other teams in front of them passed on him.

OTAs....everyone looks good when you don't hit.

It'll be years before anyone can legitimately say whether the Skins made the right decision - and that's assuming that there will prove to have *been* a 'right decision' there. I don't think either decision could possibly be considered wrong, at least to this point. Time will tell.

Agreed. But Williams was the one player that we passed on that I had some misgivings about leaving on the line for someone else to select.

He came in as the highest rated player by most scouting services and posted a 9.6 rating on one scouting board I read, but then during the draft when he was falling people were bringing up BS reasons why teams may be passing on him, ie maybe he has a big head and won't be easily coached or maybe he is a but undersized at 290 coming in to play DT.

Sort of reminded me of how Aaron Rodgers fell in 2005 despite being ranked as the #1 or #2 overall pick before the draft.

The 'herd' mentality at work.

I just think we really, really wanted Sherff and it was nothing against Williams. Just that Sherff not only was the athletic specimen you'd take high, but his attitude fits with exactly what Scot wants to build this team. Williams will probably end up being great, but he's not known for being nasty. Sherff is. I honestly think that's the difference.

Scot wants to bring guys in who, if you're not a fan of the team, you absolutely hate. Not because of what they do off field, but guys who will just physically dominate and let you know that they did, annoyingly so. See the Seahawks and 49ers for examples.

By the way, what's up guys? How's everyone during the most boring part of the offseason, lol? I'll be around here more often once things get rolling to drive Mike and Fansince crazy, I know you all missed me too much, so don't worry. :p

This post is in line with the Chris I know...not the drive-bys.

As for the character flaws issue, we all have them and I do not believe a character flaw such as his, over infalted self worth or arrogance, necessarily indicates a societal dysfunction, merely personal. However, when hubris plays a part to get in the way of what you're paid to do (Not diving for the extra 2 yards because you can't see the forrest through the trees. i.e., the injury against Jax last year that cost him the entire season, the Ngata hit), when I as a fan invest a tremendous amount of time/money, criticism is warranted. I love going to games, I love photographing and sharing with this site, but his megalomania (Superman complex) have steered me from wanting to make the investment.

And...if you were following, I clearly stated the hubris is something that can be corrected. His ability on the field...I doubt will ever be fixed. I could see him in like 5 years from now becoming something of a decent QB in the league for a team with all the right pieces, provided he understands he's not Superman, unfortunately he is not a player you build a franchise around. I think 3 the past years has proven that.

You and I just have a different definition of character flaw. But that's okay.

That's not hubris motivating those chances it's competitive drive. This is exactly the problem with this silly debate... a whole lot of conclusion jumping based on little or no evidence. He's a little cocky to be sure but as Ax said; all or most of the young kids coming in are. ALL Heisman trophy and rookie of the year winners are. Saying hubris (as if his is exceptional) caused those injuries is a MAJOR stretch. You just don't like the kid E. He made those plays because he wanted to win and thought he could pull them off, not because he has a Superman complex. Megalomania? Really, you truly believe he is megalomaniacal?

Every younger player in the league thinks he's Superman.

Every one.

Absolutely not true...and the ones who do...many back it up or they are just as guilty as RG3.
