He clearly lost possession of the ball at the :19 mark of this video. The ball is out of his hands and clearly not in his possession. He fumbled the ball mid-air.

At the :20 mark, he gets his finger tips on the ball just before going across the plane of the goal.

At the :21 second mark, he still has his finger tips on the ball before he goes into a roll and loses possession of the ball as he hit the ground.

It has been suggested he never lost possession of the ball and that is clearly inaccurate.

The rule as explained by the referee is that once control of the ball is lost, fumbled, the player must maintain possession of the ball through the play. It becomes the same scenario as a reception. The player must maintain possession through the play. Robert did not maintain possession of the ball after he lost possession prior to crossing the goal line. According to the rule, as explained by the ref, he must maintain possession after crossing the goal line.

If someone wants to show me the rule in the NFL Rulebook that contradicts what the ref said, I will agree. Until then, my understanding of the rule makes this call legitimate.

Why is it so hard to get this? He lost possession. Once he lost possession, upon regaining possession he must maintain possession through the play, after he crossed the goal line. It really is simple. Not sure why that is being ignored. Not sure why this is so difficult to understand.

I didn't realize that repossessing a fumble required the same "maintain possession to the ground" as a pass reception. Once Pierra (sp) explained that, it was clearly the right call. I think it's a bullshit rule. But it's apparently the rule.

Just wanted to add that Griffin didn't just lose possession. JPP made a hell of a play knocking the ball loose.

I totally agree with you that once a player has possession and has broken the plane its a TD and the play is over. But thats NOT the rule in this specific case. its a stupid rule but its is the rule and it was called correctly.

I appreciate the explanation, and I agree that based on the explanation it was not a touchdown. I still question the validity of the explanation.

I want to see that rule in writing. I don't see it in the following, just the receiver completing the catch rule, which they seemed to incorrectly apply to a loss and regain of possession for a runner.

If the rule does exist, I don't have a problem with the call.

Article 1 Touchdown Plays. A touchdown is scored when:
(a) the ball is on, above, or behind the plane of the opponents’ goal line and is in possession of a runner
who has advanced from the field of play; or

(b) a ball in possession of an airborne runner is on, above, or behind the plane of the goal line, and some
part of the ball passed over or inside the pylon; or

(c) a ball in player possession touches the pylon, provided that, after contact by an opponent, no part of

tackled, fumbles, and the defensive team recovers in the end zone.
Ruling: Touchdown. The ball is automatically dead at the instant of legal player possession on the
opponent’s goal line.

A.R. 11.2 Second-and-10 on B18. Runner A1 takes handoff and runs down the sideline toward the goal line with the ball

TOUCHBACK SITUATIONS

Article 2 Touchback Situations. When a team provides the impetus (3-15-3) that sends a loose ball
behind its opponent’s goal line, it is a touchback:

(a) if the ball is dead in the opponent’s possession in its end zone; or

(b) if the ball is out of bounds behind the goal line (see 8-7-3-Item 4-a); or

(c) if a scrimmage kick has not been touched by a player of the receiving team beyond the line of
scrimmage, and the ball (i) touches the ground on or behind the receiver’s goal line, (ii) touches a
player of the kicking team who is touching the ground on or behind the receiver’s goal line, or (iii)
touches a player of the kicking team who has touched the ground on or behind the receiver’s goal line
and has not re-established himself in the field of play (see 11-4-2-b for exception for a missed field
goal from beyond the 20-yard line); or

(d) if any legal or illegal kick touches the receivers’ goal posts, crossbar, or uprights, other than one which
scores a field goal; or

(e) if the kickers interfere with the opportunity to catch an airborne kick or with a fair catch behind the
receivers’ goal line (10-1-1 and 10-2-4-Note); or

(f) if a player of the kicking team illegally catches or recovers a scrimmage kick in the field of play, and
carries the ball across the goal line, or touches the goal line with any part of his body while in
possession of the ball. For exception for a missed field goal from beyond the 20-yard line, see 11-4-2-b.

Note 1: If the impetus is a scrimmage kick, and there has been a spot of first touching by the kickers beyond
the receivers’ 20-yard line, the receivers shall have the option of taking possession of the ball at the spot of
first touching.

Note 2: The impetus is not from a kick if a muff, bat, juggle, or illegal kick of any kicked ball (by a player of
either team) creates a new momentum which sends it on, above, or behind the goal line. See 3-15-3-Note.

A.R. 11.31 Quarterback A1 throws a legal pass which is intercepted in the end zone by defensive B1. B1 tries to run it out
and is downed in the end zone.
Ruling: Touchback. B’s ball first-and-10 on B20.

What a piss poor coaching job in that game on both sides of the ball.

On defense, how in the world did we not double Beckham? You know he's the only WR Eli has been looking for over the last few weeks so why are we leaving him in single coverage? Especially after he was consistently beating Breeland. How did we let 1 guy beat us? Pretty sure like all of Eli's passing yards were to Beckham. Just horrible adjustments by the defense.

On offense, what the hell happened in the 2nd half? Seemed like whatever we did that worked in the 1st half, we just stopped doing in the 2nd. Where was Alf again? Why do we ALWAYS get away from the running game? How does he only have 14 carries in a game that was never really out of hand until mid 4th quarter? Why did we stop rolling RG3 out? He looked so much better than it past weeks when he was throwing on the move. Just terrible play calling in the 2nd half on offense.

This game proved the coaches need to go. We were out coached in every aspect. Even Special Teams. How did you not figure they would try and onsides kick to start the half when they were kicking off from our side of the field? Anyone with half a football mind saw that one coming from a mile away. And Gruden just fails to even try to put RG3 in spots to succeed. In his postgame presser he was talking about how we can't roll out every play, well then come up with something that works because that was the only thing that worked. Wilson throws on the move all the time so don't give me that BS Jay.

And then, do we have the worst team doctors in the league? How in the hell does Colt get cleared to play and leave after taking 1 hit and it wasn't even a bad hit. There is no reason he should have been allowed to play. Is Gruden that big of an idiot to let him play? And why wasn't Cousins active? If you know there was a possibility Colt wasn't going to make it through the game, why not have all 3 QBs ready and active? We were 1 bad hit on RG3 away from seeing Darrel Young or Andre Roberts play QB in an actual NFL game. Just terrible coaching decisions.

Yeah, Gruden's had a really, really bad rookie year.

But barring anything worse happening in the last 2 weeks, I'm still on the give him another year train.

Mixed feelings, but ultimately I don't believe you can continue the coaching carousel and expect to win or have sustained improvement. Keep Gruden assuming he wants to continue.
