Cousins
Redskins quarterback Kirk Cousins says he sometimes tries to do too much to get his team back into the game. Tough to disagree with that assessment and he called his second-half interception numbers “atrocious.” Again, tough to disagree.
Yes, the players know they need to run the ball better. It’s perplexing to them, too, as to why they’re not. And I think there’s a sense that it’s just one block here or there not getting made. Also, that defenses are playing them a little differently, using personnel looks that traditionally give them problems -- with five-man fronts (including two outside linebackers) and bringing a safety into the box.
Cousins said the run game could help everyone. “It takes the pressure off the passing game,” he said.
Cousins also said he does not think his missing receivers on underneath routes is an accuracy problem. Rather, he said, it’s more mechanical: his feet aren’t always in the right spot, for example. Also, he said sometimes it’s more about the timing than being inaccurate. Whatever the reason, he’s off.
Receiver Leonard Hankerson was anxious for his return to practice after being on the physically unable to perform list since training camp started. “Those six weeks flew by,” he said. “The knee is feeling really good.” Stephen Bowen also was expected to return to practice Wednesday.
Fullback Darrel Young said of supporting Cousins, “I don’t question Kirk at all.”
More talk about sense of urgency, a phrase that gets used quite a bit when teams start to lose. Do they have it? Is that all it takes? If you didn’t have it before, can you really get it now? Defensive end Jason Hatcher dropped the phrase Wednesday, saying, “It’s been good, but it can be better.” And he talked about leaders, but said, “I’m more of a doer. Some talk, some do. I’m a doer.”
