Random Commanders Thoughts

Failed 1st round pick, now 4th-string CB... God I hope he starts.
 
The first half of our schedule is brutal but if we can somehow stay 500 for that, I really like how our schedule sets up in the second half. I think our defense is going to turn some heads for once.
 
What would it take to redeem the 2024 draft class? We were all excited about how many top 100 draft picks we landed. The results so far have been disappointing.

My thoughts:

I think Peters hit on Jayden, Sainristil, and Coleman. I think Coleman was misused and could have been a starter for us that we were happy with at right tackle. The rest still have a chance, but there are more questions then certainties.

Specifics:

Jayden Daniels: All he has to do is stay healthy and this was an amazing pick. Another injury riddled one and we begin to wonder if Peters made the right choice since the injuries looked foreseeable.

Johnny Newton: If in Daronte Jones, he becomes a multiple high use player, I think we may feel better about him. I think there's a chance. Newton is a tweener whose best trait is penetration and quicks. I have a feeling Whitt wanted his DTs to absorb linemen to free up linebackers to make plays. If he was misused, Newton as a penetrating DT or DE in a 3-4 might do something

Mike Sainristil: I still believe in him. I think he's better on the outside and better in zone. I think he bounces back

Ben Sinnott: Chances are he's a bust. He can block and he can catch, but he's not been productive. Again, if he was totally miscast and in Blough's system can make noise as an H-Back or fullback we might feel better about him, but like Newton he's been a disappointment as a 2nd rounder.

Brandon Coleman: I like Brandon and think the coaches blew it by moving him off tackle and insisting he had to be a guard. I suspect we'd be fine with him and think he was a great pick if we hadn't picked Connerly and slotted him as our right tackle. There's part of me wondering if Coleman is a better tackle than Connerly even today. I doubt they would try Connerly at guard, but I do wonder what would happen if they flopped positions.

Luke McCaffrey: Good at Kickoffs and began making a few plays at receiver, but let's be honest, as loud as everyone on this board keeps demanding we sign a vet receiver, he's clearly not been what we hoped for. I think this year marks his last shot.

Jordan Magee: A rotational lber in the 5th is probably fine if he contributes on special teams. Honestly though, the free agent signings and drafting Styles means his best shot is back up.

Hamilton: Cut. No redemption arc possible.

Javontae Jean-Baptiste: Another one who has flashed, but has gotten injured a bit too much. LIke Magee, the signings pretty much push him back to the reserve role. As a 7th rounder he has done well, but I'm not sure how much longer he has.

Sadly we are going to need to watch year 3 to be able to give fair evals for the whole draft class.

My belief is Jayden will flourish in the new system after some early growing pains. This is built on the assumption that he can stay healthy and the team acquired a true WR2.

Newton, Mikey, Luke and Sinnott are in a shit or get off the pot year in my eyes as to earning a starting position. I only have faith in Mikey, especially with the new scheme, out of the group which sucks

I agree that Coleman was mismanaged and should be a starting T on this team. Instead he is a swing in case they need him.

We may realistically only out with 2 starters out of 6 picks in the top 100....that's awful

They talked big about MaGee but I'm not getting that starter vibe, especially after the off-season LB acquisitions.

JJB proved worthy of a 7th and has a short at sticking around
 

Giants analyst isn't exactly buying the Commanders' offseason improvements​

Nick Falato from Big Blue View still isn't convinced by Washington. While the analyst acknowledged that the defensive side of things will improve, concerns about offensive personnel, Jayden Daniels' health, and the introduction of rookie play-caller David Blough mean the jury is still out.


"The overall personnel of Washington remains a question mark. Much of their 2026 success is contingent on [Jayden] Daniels’ health and development.

"A step from Josh Conerly Jr. on the offensive line may really assist the stability of the offense under new coordinator David Blough. I understand the vision, but remain skeptical of how it translates and if there’s enough skill around Daniels that can allow him to unlock his potential. At the very least, though, the defense should be much improved."

Now, it's not hard to see why the New York Giants might be feeling themselves. They are a franchise reborn with new head coach John Harbaugh. They are being touted by large sections of the media for significant improvements. The G-Men harbor much loftier ambitions, but they have achieved absolutely nothing on the field yet.


The Giants won fewer games than the Commanders last season — a campaign that was considered a major letdown for Washington. Both clubs have now turned the page. With the Eagles looking a little more vulnerable than usual, both will fancy their chances of pushing for the division crown.

Everyone can win the offseason. Winning in the regular season is something else entirely.

The Giants have found that difficult in recent years. Aside from their memorable run to the NFC Championship game, the Commanders have too. But given the overall roster talent and the heightened pressure on Quinn in a make-or-break year, Washington could be better positioned to make the strides required.


Time will tell on that, but Falato's assessment might come back to haunt him if everything clicks and Daniels gets a better run of luck on the injury front.

Is it just me, or is the body composition of Josh Conerly looking a little different heading into Year 2? I feel like he looks a little leaner.

Don Coryell deserves some type of place of honor in Redskins History, for all he did in the many years he helped mold Joe Gibbs.

From the time Joe Gibbs was a college player, where Coryell was his college coach ; to Gibbs' college coaching career, where he was assistant to Coryell ;
and then the same relationship in the NFL, Joe Gibbs spent about 20 consecutive years either playing under, or being mentored by Coryell.

Of course, Coryell shouldn't get too much of the credit, because there was a very good reason why Coryell always chose Gibbs to be with him, in almost every job Coryell had. It was the perfect football marriage.

I guess where I'm going with it is, Harbaugh is most definitely a good coach and will be the best the Giants have probably had since Bill Parcells. Anyone who doesn't think so and points to his 'arrogance' is probably whistling past the graveyard. Many many good coaches could be described as 'arrogant'. The Gibbs of the NFL world are few and far between.

I don't disagree with this at all. He is a good coach.

However, there is a "but."

Harbaugh had a 3 time NFL MVP from 2018 to 2025. And generally really stacked rosters. (Though ironically not at WR.) And they managed to get to the playoffs a number of time, but they only made one championship game (2023, lost to the Chiefs).

2018 - Lost Wildcard
2019 - Lost Divisional Round
2020 - Lost Divisional Round
2021 - Missed the playoffs
2022 - Lost Wild Card Round
2023 - Lost Championship Game
2024 - Lost Divisional Round.

And that's WITH one of the best 3 QBs in the league. Even if we think Jackson Dart is going to take a big step forward (I am somewhat dubious about that, but let's go with it), he's not going to be Lamar next year.

I think Harbaugh is a really good coach. But I think he was a really good coach with a generational QB the last 8 years. I get that he had Flacco and won the SB before that. But when he had Flacco and won the SB, he also had Ray Lewis and Ed Reed, and that defense.

What is he without future HOF players? I dunno. It's going to be interesting to find out.

I really think this is wait and see for me about how much he'll turn the Giants around in year 1. Maybe it's a huge turnaround, but I wouldn't be surprised if it's more incremental. Get a professional coach, get 2-3 games better than last year. If I had to bet, that's what I would bet on.

I think they'll be improved, but not dramatically.

I would also take Harbaugh (either one) over Dan Quinn.
