Belichick is still drafting like he has Tom Brady under center. He no longer has a guy who hyper-elevates the other 10 guys on the field with him so he needs some superior talent at other positions.

I never read anything about a number one, just thought the article was timed well after we got a 2nd and 3rd in the trades. It's fodder at the end of the day. No one's trading for Belichick in the NFL not even the Raiders at this juncture of repetitious failure.
 
I absolutely hate that rule. But they know that the refs aren’t smart enough to use good judgement. He clearly did everything he could not to drive the QB into the ground, land on him, etc. You can even tell he braced himself. Yet the ref stills says he landed full body weight on him for a foul. That’s not what that rule is for. Just like the hand glancing off the QBs helmet. That’s not what the blow to the head rule is for.

I will say though, despite that call, I enjoyed that game a lot more with the lower number of penalties. So many other games I saw this week, way too many penalties called. This one had more of a let them play style of officiating. It’s just that the refs had to throw a turd in there to remind us that they still suck.
 
well let me say that any non-judgement penalty should be able to be challenged.

Facemask / Offsides / False Start / Holding / Illegal Formation

you can challenge "too many men" on the field, why not offsides? 3 times was that missed in this game, 2 of the 3 on 3rd down and less than 6...
 
From 2020-2022 our passing offense was ranked 21st-25th in the league in yards.

In 2023, we are 10th.

Sam Howell is the first QB in Washington franchise history to throw for 2500 yds or more in his first 10 games.

Probably the most frustrating part of this season was that the model has been inverted. What was supposed to happen is that the vet defense would control opponents and give time for Howell to develop. What's happened is that Howell has been better than a rookie should be and good enough to win, but the defense makes every opponent look like a playoff team if not a Super Bowl winner. I mean even yesterday if that Pats' receiver didn't bobble the ball they would have at least tied the game if not outright won it.

Glad for the pick, but this defense is so much worse than it should be. And I blame most of it on a stubborn insistence to refuse to try to pressure QBs.
 
We got jobbed by the officials so badly yesterday. Numerous missed offsides calls. Questionable calls on our defense all day. They did hold Mac Jones to a 55% completion rate. And in the 2nd half, after giving up the FG drive, they shut down the next 5 final drives. We did not get a ton of pressure, 1 sack (unofficial) to 3 by them. Rhamondre Stephenson had his best game of the season with 87 yds and a TD. But we were able to keep their passing game from killing us (no WR had more than 55 yds, and just a single passing TD). They were only 3/12 on 3rd down which was huge. It was not a spectacular day by the defense, but it was enough.

You're not wrong at all on the D, but I saw some improvements yesterday and even Forbes had a couple of moments. The biggest stat of the day yesterday was TOP. We won that battle 37 minutes to their 23. We controlled the game from the outset, and if not for some of the worst officiating I've ever seen, we win it walking away.
 
One quibble (not against you, but NFL stats). One of Howell's sacks was a scramble where he basically decided to slide after losing six inches. That shouldn't be considered a sack.
 
Just looking at sacks taken alone, you can see a radical shift in both Howell's decision-making, and more importantly the playcalling by EB. My only bitch - Bienemy reverted back to a lot more straight drop back plays in the 2nd half, which almost got us in trouble a couple of times. But definitely nice to see a more *normal* sack rate these past few games.
 
The defense once again gave up a chunk play, the 64 yard TD by Stephenson, but in the end it made the play to win the game with the INT.

That had not been happening in previous games including contests against the no-account Giants and Bears.

The Giants offensive line is terrible, they were outscored 30-6 by the Raiders who fired their coach and were starting a rookie quarterback in his first start yesterday, and yet the Washington defense didn't make any plays to counterbalance the tough afternoon Howell was having on the other side of the ball.

THAT and the 200 yards receiving by DJ Moore in the Bears games are reasons as the owner I would have gone ahead and made the trade deadline deals.

As Jimmy Johnson said in Dallas when he was in his first couple of years "If I can lose with you, I can lose without you' :devilish:

Chase Young and Co. didn't make the argument they deserved to play out these last 9 games here in DC as a unit.

Again, the Patriots on offense are not the Eagles or Bills.

BUT, the Giants and Chicago are games where the defense could have made a difference, and didn't come close.

There's a part of me that wants to go back to look at the game tape of the first five games because I swear Howell faced immediate pressure straight through the center of the line on every play. So while I agree his decision making is improving, I think the line because of the benchings and injuries is at least as big a factor in his success. Pre-lineup change, you couldn't count the number of free rushers that got through on both hands and both feet before half time. There were plays yesterday where Howell got to his third read and threw it from an actual pocket. How many times did Howell ever have a non collapsed pocket around him before the Charles injury and Gates benching?

So sure, Howell is processing better, but the line is actually better, too. There's a reason that they haven't gone back to Gates.
 
I'm sure that's also a factor. But Bienemy's playcalling has changed radically from dropping Sam straight back 50 times a game.

I like Larsen. But if the guy doesn't stop snapping it high he won't be in there long either.
 
I hated the Nick Gates signing from the get go. To me he was a replacement level player, and Washington went out and signed him early in free agency to a multi-year deal.

The Giants didn't think he was good enough to stick around on a line that is among the worst in the NFL.

Yes, Tyler Larsen is better, he's a better pass protector and is better in the run game as well. The fact we could reach back and grab a 32 year old journeyman and plug him in and get better performances proves Gates was a poor signing as was the signing of Cody Barton.

Barton gets jobbed in the run game, he is easily blocked and lacks the strength and size to win matchups against tight ends and blocking backs.
 
Rivera's free agency record has got to be the worst of any active NFL executive - I mean it is godawful.
 
Other than Jamison Crowder I don't see any bright spots in the free agent pickups.
