Carson isn't doing so well at the moment - for a lot of reasons and not of them his, which is certainly a subject for hot debate around here.

However, he wasn't the only option in the off-season and I thought I'd look at the other QBs we might have had and how they are doing at this point. Some of these names are guys we know the team had an interest in (Wilson & Garoppolo), while others are guys various fans, including any number of people on this site, wanted the team to be interested in (Trubisky, Mayfield, etc).

I'll tell you now, I was largely a Trubisky guy myself before we acquired Wentz.

PlayerCurrent TeamRecordAttempts-CompletionsYardsTouchdowns-INTsSacksCurrent Status

Carson WentzCommanders1-3107-172 (62.2%)10318-517Starter

Things that jump out at me:

Wentz has been asked to pass more than anyone else on this list. A lot more.
Even so, he has a better completion percentage than anyone else on this list. And we know he has suffered with a significant number of drops by receivers who are normally sure-handed.
While Wentz has been sacked more than anyone on this list, he hasn't been sacked a lot more per pass play than Wilson - the hands down dream signing for most fans. Both guys are averaging roughly a sack per 10 pass attempts.

The only guy on this list arguably doing better than Wentz is Garoppolo but he is starting on a team that made the NFC Championship last year and has a coach who understands the value of a solid running game.

So my conclusion at this point - Wentz might not be the answer here but I am not really sure any of these other guys would be doing any better.

Question - is this an exercise worth continuing? If it is, did I miss any possible QB candidates on my list?

I would’ve preferred Garoppolo. All he does is outperform expectations. Under appreciated and better than he gets credit for being.

I think the amazing thing about that list is all of those teams look like they did last year with the exception of Pittsburgh who got worse. It’s not just Trubisky that got worse in Pittsburgh, their whole team just looks bad, which is surprising. Oh and Trubisky already lost his job to Pickett.

It’s only 4 games and the NFL season is a long one, so this call could change. But the Broncos so far still look mediocre under Wilson. The 49ers showed Monday night they are still a playoff team with Jimmy G. The Falcons, Panthers, and Commanders all look like they will be searching for a new QB next year. Atlanta has a rookie QB, so maybe they ride Marriota one more year or turn it over to the kid. The Commanders have Howell, but it would shock me if they throw him out there next year.

Basically, maybe 1 of those guys could have helped, but I’m not sure if Jimmy G does any better than Wentz in this system. He does well with Shanahan even though someone there doesn’t want him. Maybe he’s Kyle’s Kirk Cousins and he was being forced to play Lance.

If we had San Frsns defense I might agree but he's just a better Trent Dilfer riding a running game and great defense so far.

Trubisky was a FA. Wentz cost assets. But Wentz is more tantalizing than Trubisky, who is vanilla and plays scared. Wentz can win over some fans. Trubisky wins over nobody.

I remember a BGO Blind Pig episode where we covered the majority of these QBs this past offseason. The general consensus, and something that we all acknowledged, was that they were all flawed in some way. Asking any of these guys to come in and elevate this team to where we expected it to go was largely unrealistic given the flaws. These were all QBs that needed to be insulated really well in order to have any chance of success. Roster-wise, it seems pretty clear to me that Rivera miscalculated what we had, and as a result, the Wentz experience isn't turning out the way we all wanted it to. If it wasn't a miscalculation, right now, acquiring Wentz feels like a big move for the sake of making a move, given the questions that surrounded the entire QB crop that was available this past offseason.

The fact we throw the ball so damn much when we have so many solid RBs just goes to show the ineptitude of Turner. Not to be a broken record, but the guy abandons the run every game.

The game against the iggles. AP has a 96 yard TD run and never touches it again.

We gain 100 yards in a half against the cowbums and we abandon it because "it's not working". Yeah, you're running up the gut constantly with JD instead of utilizing him on the edges.

Wentz holds the ball too long and can't seem to get out of the pocket when it's collapsing most of the time. He just stands there while DEs come crashing down and smash him. We got him like that when he was with the iggles and Kerrigan/Young had a field day. It's who he is.

Unfortunately we paid too much for him in both money and draft picks so we're stuck unless we find some sucker dumber than our organization that will pick up the tab.

I also think there's some validity to the criticism that we almost always run when Wentz is under center, and almost always pass when he's operating out of the gun. When people say 'it's like they knew our plays before we ran them' maybe there's a legit reason for that. Turner not only needs to keep pounding the rock he needs to mix it up a little more so defenses don't see what's coming in advance.

Turner has had this problem since he's been here.
Remember last season the talk of Ron sitting him down and telling him they've got to run the ball more?

It seems like this is an epidemic team wide: Not learning from past mistakes.

It's Year 3 and it's like Ground Hog Day around here.
