REDSKINS SIGN REX GROSSMAN

LOUDOUN COUNTY, VA – The Washington Redskins announced today that they have signed free agent quarterback Rex Grossman. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Grossman, 29, has played in 37 career games, with 31 starts, in his seven-year career. He has completed 524-of-971 for 6,197 yards, with 33 touchdowns and 36 interceptions.

Grossman (6-1, 217) spent last season with Houston, where he worked with current Redskins Offensive Coordinator Kyle Shanahan, who served in the same capacity for the Texans.

Prior to his stint in Houston, Grossman played the previous six years with Chicago, who selected him in the first round (No. 22 overall) of the 2003 NFL Draft . In 2006, Grossman led the Bears to a 13-3 record and their first Super Bowl appearance since 1985. That season, he started all 16 regular season games, and set career highs as he completed 262-of-480 passes for 3,193 yards, 23 touchdowns and 20 interceptions. He also started all three postseason contests.

Grossman starred collegiately at the University of Florida, where he was the runner-up for the Heisman Trophy in 2002, and finished his career as the all-time leading passer in school and Southeastern Conference history.

A native of Bloomington, Ind., Grossman was born Aug. 23, 1980.

REDSKINS SIGN GROSSMAN

The Redskins have signed free agent quarterback Rex Grossman, the team announced on Wednesday.

Grossman is a 7-year NFL veteran who has played for the Chicago Bears from 2003-08 and the Houston Texans last year.

Grossman, 6-1 and 217 pounds, worked with current Redskins offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan last year in Houston. Shanahan was offensive coordinator for the Texans in 2009.

For his career, Grossman has played in 37 games with 31 starts. He has completed 524-of-971 passes for 6,197 yards, 33 touchdowns and 36 interceptions. His QB rating is 65.9.

Grossman comes with a measure of baggage, however.

He has struggled with injuries throughout his career, including a knee injury in 2004, a fractured ankle in 2005 and a knee injury in 2007.

He has also been criticized for his decision-making at quarterback and his high number of interceptions.

Grossman's best season was 2006, when he guided the Bears to a 13-3 record and an appearance in Super Bowl XLI against the Indianapols Colts.

He completed 262-of-480 passes for 3,193, 23 touchdowns and 20 interceptions that season. In the Super Bowl, a 29-17 win by the Colts, he completed 20-of-28 passes for 165 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions.

Grossman was the Bears' first-round draft pick (22nd overall) in the 2003 NFL Draft.

He has played two games against the Redskins, including his second career start as a rookie in 2003. In the Bears' 27-24 win over the Redskins on Dec. 21, 2003, Grossman completed 19-of-32 passes for 249 yards, two touchdowns and one interception.

A native of Bloomington, Ind., Grossman starred collegiately at the University of Florida, where he was the runner-up for the Heisman Trophy in 2002. He finished his career as the all-time leading passer at Florida and Southeastern Conference history.

From 1999-2001, Grossman played for Steve Spurrier at Florida. Spurrier, of course, would go on to become Redskins head coach from 2002-03.

This move made sense. Unlike Zorn who never brought in any players with experience in his system, Shanahan is trying to get a leg up on the learning curve for his offense.

Holmgren did the same thing with Seneca Wallace in Cleveland.

Artis Hicks also indicated the offense is pretty much the same one they ran in Minnesota.

Shanahan is signing these particular players for a reason, a point which seems to elude ESPN and Fox who dismiss most of the team's signings.

I don't think Shanahan's done anything since he's been here to indicate he's made up his mind about Colt (or anyone else who hasn't been released yet). He's been consistent with his "it's about competition at every spot" mantra. As of today, indications are Colt will get the chance to make his case on the practice field ... no player chosen as late in the draft as he was can ask for anything more.
