My predictions:
Washington Redskins
Sun, Sep 13 vs Dolphins 1:00 PM
Loss (0-1) - Our OL has 2 new players on the right side, a very weak LG and an adequate Center. Wake, Suh, and Mitchell will be in Kirk's face before he can plant. We've seen what Kirk can do in these situations, and the uninspiring performance against the Ravens first team probably doesn't bode well for a win. This game would probably be close if McCoy was starter, but I can't trust Kirk Cousins in these situations yet. Miami has improved steadily over the last few years and Tannehill has some new weapons. Breeland missing this game will hurt, especially since Amerson looked like he had trouble in PS.
Sun, Sep 20 vs Rams 1:00 PM
Loss (0-2) - This game could go either way, but I still can't trust Kirk Cousins in games like this. I'm not even sure Kirk can trust himself. One miss-step and he could throw 4 picks in a half. Rams have an extremely tough, competent defense. This might be Gurley's first game, so that would be something to watch. EDIT: It looks like Gurley is out for week 3. Colt McCoy got shutout last time we played them, so I don't see Gurley as the deciding factor.
Thu, Sep 24 @ Giants 8:25 PM
Loss (0-3) - The last time Kirk Cousins played a prime time game against the New York Giants in Washington, it was a very bad night. The Giants were laughing at us. I don't need to say anything more, really. The Giants swept us last year, even though they only won 6 games. It would be unlikely for us to win this game.
Sun, Oct 4 vs Eagles 1:00 PM
Toss-up (0-3-1) - We usually play the Eagles well in Philly. Kirk Cousins won't be the starter after floudering in 3 games, so I suppose McCoy will likely game manage his way to about 20 points. However, the Eagles average about 30+ points per game. I'll factor this as a Win and provide a realistic win total and an optimistic win total at the end.
Sun, Oct 11 @ Falcons 1:00 PM
Loss (0-4-1) - We're due for a win, but the last time we defeated the Falcons was in 2003... Much of this rides on Dan Quinn's abilities as a HC and OC Kyle Shanahan. Tevin Coleman is starting RB there. A healthy Roddy White & Julio Jones, with the game being in ATL means it's probably a loss.
Sun, Oct 18 @ Jets 1:00 PM
Toss-up (0-4-2) - It's the Jets... we really should beat the Jets, but it's not Rex Ryan and Geno Smith... It's Todd Bowles, Chan Gailey, Brandon Marshall, Eric Decker and a really good offensive line. This is the type of game where we lose on Special Teams (and their coach is Bobby April). We'll likely lose on a low Forbath extra-point that gets blocked and run back for 2 points. I'm calling it that Kai Forbath is going to be the 1st kicker to have this happen.
Sun, Oct 25 vs Buccaneers 1:00 PM
Loss (0-5-2) - This will be the last game with Jay Gruden as the Redskins HC. This will be a really embarrassing defeat and it will be totally apparent that we were out-coached in just about every game we played with him as our HC.
BYE - Bill Callahan takes over as Interim HC...
Sun, Nov 8 @ Patriots 1:00 PM
Loss (0-6-2) - It's the Patriots. I'm sure they'll find a way to cheat.
Sun, Nov 15 vs Saints 1:00 PM
Win (1-6-2) - The Saints aren't that good, but neither are we. The Saints should defeat us easily, but I'm guessing this is the one game that I'm most confident of in our whole schedule. We have a new coach and it's our first home game. We'll find some energy and I think win this one.
Sun, Nov 22 @ Panthers 1:00 PM
Loss (1-7-2) - It's in Carolina and the Panthers are just a better team.
Sun, Nov 29 vs Giants 1:00 PM
Loss (1-8-2) - We got swept by them last year and we'll get swept again. Colt McCoy doesn't have the juice to keep up the scoring. Eli Manning has more healthy targets this year.
Mon, Dec 7 vs Cowboys 8:30 PM
Win (2-8-2) - It's the Cowboys in December... We should lose, but we'll win.
Sun, Dec 13 @ Bears 1:00 PM
Loss (2-9-2) - The Bears are really bad, but they have Fox & Fangio and a whole bunch of games to fix things. Bears will have a bad record, but will be a good team by December. We'll still be the team that fired their coach at the Bye. It's in Chicago...
Sun, Dec 20 vs Bills 1:00 PM
Loss (2-10-2) - The Bills are really improved and will be competing with Dolphins & Patriots for division title... We aren't in their class. We haven't beaten the Buffalo Bills since the SuperBowl... Yes, you heard right.
Sat, Dec 26 @ Eagles 8:25 PM
Loss (2-11-2) - The day after Christmas, the Redskins are already thinking about vacation while the Eagles are thinking about the playoffs.
Sun, Jan 3 @ Cowboys 1:00 PM
Toss-up (2-11-3) - It's the Cowboys in December...
2 wins
11 losses
3 toss-ups
I said 2-3 wins, mostly because it would be unlikely we win more than 1 of those toss-up games. However, realistic worst case scenario is 2 wins and realistic best case scenario is 5 wins.
Yes, we've made improvements, but so has every other team. It's come down to coaching. I can't really trust Joe Barry or anyone who got their job because they worked with Bruce Allen at Tampa Bay... They haven't proven anything. I can't trust Kotwica either. Last year, we managed 4 wins against a pretty easy schedule where we played the AFC South balanced by a more difficult NFC West. This year, we go up against an improved AFC East and a typically tough NFC South that we haven't done well against in recent history. Over the last decade, we're 6-12 against the NFC South.
Anyway, it's just a prediction. I hope it's a bad prediction.
