PFT: Washington may be in the Mariota business

Hey steven, feel free not to join in. But we're best friends having a friendly conversation and I damn straight don't care if you like it or not.

Jesus Christ - there's actually a decent conversation going on ...dial back the defensiveness guys, it's okay to see situations differently!

Twitter is not real journalism no matter how much you push it, bro. Dianna has been called out now and many more will be as well.

Gruden came out and called Griffin the starter for 2015. so either he is a liar or he is a pawn and has no spine of his own.

Or once again this is all just drama and people are feeding in to it like a kardashian on a sex tape.

Your comments (and I'm not saying you) come across as knee-jerk reactionary. I'm surprised by them and here's why. Gruden coming out and calling Griffin the starter is a good thing, not a "bad" thing. Good for both those guys, it squashes the controversy, and brings needed confidence to Robert going in to the new season. Take it at face value, its a good thing, I don't know why you of all people wouldn't see that. Good for robert, your hero, but its not an either or situtation. Its win win. How can anyone take a "
win-win" and turn it into drama queen day?

I think the lockerroom will start out just fine, but the fan base, if they have taken die hard stands against or for player/coach, just feed into the hype of a meltdown waiting to happen. It doesn't have to happen, I'm not worried that the lockerroom is divided, my biggest concern is how will coach get along with GM in the new front office structure. No one has addressed this, but in my view, that is the #1 priority to keeping this ship on an even keel. By now, I fully expect that Scot knows what Jay is all about with this team. Its a team effort, not me against you (player against coach, fans against front office etc.)

Derek and I have no issues and are just discussing things like we would anywhere at any time.

Mick, I can kind of hear it but with how much he spoke to the media last year and the drama he helped create he should have said little or nothing until it was solid.

Seems to me this is pretty straightforward ... when the comments were made, and within that context, the head coach said that the quarterback who ended the previous season as starter would head into the next season as the presumed starter. I suppose one can infer what ones wants out of "into next season," but the argument can clearly made that it leaves open the possibility it meant heading into training camp. I'm having a hard time grasping why that is such a flashpoint for some.

Context may change. There could be a new quarterback added to the mix. Or the guy who heads into the season as the presumed starter will soon show he as not progressed to the satisfaction of the team, and a change might be in the offing. Or ... the presumed starter heading into camp shows clear signs of progress, to the extent that doing anything other than seeing how that arc plays out would not be in the interests of the team.

Absent knowledge of what will transpire between now and then---or between the time the head coach made the statements in question and the start of training camp---I'm not sure why we are spending so much time psychoanalyzing the head coach from afar for making what look to me like perfectly reasonable comments given the context at the time.

Mike if Gruden were to say nothing at all, the controversy will only spread and catch fire. You don't wait for a fire (one started for ANY reason) to put itself out, you stamp it out asap. Saying nothing, in my opinion, would have been the worst thing for Gruden to do. Just my .02

There was no controversy when the season ended. The coaches with the most success are usually the ones who say the least. With the track record Gruden has he should have just said "we'll see" or the equivalent to that and then there wouldn't have been any fire or discussion.
Now we have twitter journalists blowing up with trade comments and people wondering "if that's true then why say what you did?"

And mark, the reason we're spending so much time is because it's the offseason and we're having a friendly debate amongst friends about it.

Or at least I was hoping that was the case.

'We'll see' would've sparked major speculation and drama. Gruden said the obvious, that Griffin is the presumed starter. But as several have said, it's also obvious that it's only true until it isn't. And it's a coaches prerogative to change his mind about any starter whenever he sees fit.

We're dissecting a reply that Gruden had a split second to decide how to respond to, or even whether to respond to. Keep that in mind too.

Or the equivalent to that. That could mean don't say a thing, give them a Marshawn answer, next question, or just answer it honestly. I'm sure Griffin knows where his career sits.

I would be fine seeing Griffin go just so we never have to roll around in his drama again - whether it's if his own creation or not :)

It's not about having a friendly conversation, brother Mike. I kinda figure that's a given around here. At least that's not what I was getting at ...

What I've been surprised about are the number of fairly passionate comments I believe I've seen from some suggesting Gruden's comments were somehow ... shall we say ... seriously misguided? Hey, they might prove to be, depending on how it all plays out. But they might also prove to be prescient and exactly what he should have said given the context.

Bottom line for me, without knowing what was in his head and why he said what he did, when he did, I'm agnostic on the statements and perfectly willing to give the benefit of the doubt.

I get that I'm a little weird that way though. :)

You don't take past and track record in to consideration as well and use that as a barometer with it?

That's why I think it. If it was the first time he spoke wrong I'd be cool....but I am a critical bastard and I know it

Hahaha, i know what you mean. The way things were handled last year with Griff and the overwhelming push back he received, it all kind of comes together in negativity. My opinion on it is more based on an isolated incident. This particular statement, stand alone, anonymous source says it, I don't think it's an issue, regardless of the events upcoming.

I guess I'm just not prepared to categorically say he "spoke wrong" Mike. Then or earlier. I know this will drive some people to distraction, but I'm still not convinced that calling Robert out in public like he did was mistake. If Robert comes to camp and it's clear he crashed the books big time and has suddenly morphed into a real NFL quarterback in terms of managing the passing game ... will Jay's harshest critics be prepared to suggest maybe they were wrong and he knew exactly what he was doing?

Well..we have to agree to disagree then.

Griffin is a real qb but he's not what gruden wants. Gruden apparently wants a career backup like mccoy to be the starter. Saying things like "Robert needs to learn his place" doesn't help anyone at all. That is a slap in the face and a big F U.

Also, Robert is 23? 24? Gruden is 36? 37? Yet they are doing the same things in the press. I expect it from a young man but not from someone closer to 40 than 30.

Sonny vs Billy, today, would make the innerwepps splode!

Drama and the Redskins QB go together like pancakes and surp.

Griffin only started because McCoy leveled off and then got hurt.

If you forget for a minute that Griffin was a top pick his performances wouldn't put him as a certain starter on any NFL team.

That's part of the transition here.

We have to move on from guys that were high picks and are playing simply because they were high picks.

Jenkins was a #2 pick that failed to stand out, so you let him move on.

Ditto for Brian Orakpo.

Eventually the 'reaper' called the cap comes calling for these guys.

Griffin looks like he is in the last chapter of the book here.

Top pick of a coach that is gone and a GM in Allen that booted himself from the job after last season.
